赤羽台という高台にあるので、電車からもよく見える赤羽八幡神社は境内の下を東北・上越新幹線が通っている。また、境内には新幹線の高架下を通る参道がある。庭瀬にある八幡神社は高台に山陽新幹線ぎりぎりに沿って立っているが、赤羽八幡神社は境内を避けることはできなかったようだ。
赤羽の文字が明らかに後付けになっている。
Tokiwa-so is not just a typical ordinary apartment house, but it is famous and regarded as the birthplace of Japanese manga culture. Osamu Tezuka started living here in 1953. Since then, many aspiring manga artists who became prominent later, such as Hiroo Terada, Fujiko Fujio, Shotaro Ishinomori, and Fujio Akatsuka had lived there. They all became househould names.
椎名町では30年前に「一圓」のジャンボ餃子を食べた。このあたりの銭湯にも入りにきていた。新宿の中落合「青木荘」に住んでいたので、自転車で近かった。
中華料理屋「松葉」が見える。ふつーの中華料理屋さんと思うだろう。確かに行列ができているわけではない、ところがここは知る人ぞ知るあの「松葉」なのである。きっとおばQに出てくる小池さんも「チキンラーメン」や、「松葉」の出前のラーメンを食べていたのだろう。
埼玉県川口市の芝地区の住宅地に芸術的な建築物が目に入ってくる。見れば「安東病院」とある。この芸術的な外観は経営者の好みだろうか、昭和34年に設立された病院とのこと。半世紀を越える歴史のある病院らしい。ガウディのように自然な曲線を活かしていると言えばいえる。コルビュジエのような規則性や幾何学的な美とはちょっと違うようである。色合いもなかなか面白い。誰が設計したのだろうか。今度内部を見に行ってみることにしよう。もちろん診察も兼ねて。
「旧田中家住宅」埼玉県川口市のランドマークの一つである。加古川の肥料王の「あかがね御殿・多木浜洋館」のように、鋳物業界に君臨した実業家の家か？と思ったら味噌醸造で財をなし、江戸という大消費地が隣接しているために栄えた。和洋式の立派な建築物であり、洋館は木造煉瓦造りの三階建て、和館は数寄屋造り、池泉回遊式庭園、そして茶室と欲しいものが全て揃ってある。現在は川口市の管理する文化財になっている。竣工は1923年(大正12年)で、関東大震災のあった年である。
川口は荒川の賜物 Kawaguchi has prospered for a long time as a foundry town. It is a long-established foundry town. As the sand and clay that make up the riverbed of the Arakawa River were found to be suitable for making sand molds for casting. It is also famous for "begoma," a traditional Japanese spinning toy. But foundries producing begoma gradually went out of business.

川口市と言えば、吉永小百合の「キューポラのある街」で有名であり、NHKの「地球大紀行」は鋳物の街川口で、溶岩やら、マグマのようなものを鋳物工場で再現した。しかし、川口はもはや大都会であり、鋳物工場と職人さんであふれる街の姿はなく、キューポラを探したがどこにもなかった。しかしどこかにはあるのだろう。
