英語生活ノおト 第４巻＞ 直読・直解の試み（「線香読みのすすめ」続編）＞ 直読直解（伝説の）ジョン・Ｆ・ケネディ大統領就任演説（その２）
演説の中盤です。To ～で始まる文がずらっと並ぶ、大変凝った構成となっています。また後世の大統領演説に比べやや文体や語彙にこだわったところがあります。内容的に（今から見れば）偏った部分も多いですが、当時は東西冷戦の緊迫感のただ中でであることを理解すべきでしょう。
This much we pledge（我々はこれを固く誓います） and more（そして、それだけにとどまりません）.
To those old allies（古くからの盟友に対し） whose cultural and spiritual origins we share（それらの文化的・精神的な源を共有するのですが）, we pledge the loyalty（我々は忠誠を誓います） of faithful friends（誠実な友として）. United（団結しましょう）, there is little we cannot do（できないことはないはずです） in a host of cooperative ventures（in a host of何度も。 我々が何度も協力して取り組めば）. Divided（(もし)対立していれば）, there is little we can do（できることはほとんどありません） -- for we dare not meet a powerful challenge（難しい課題に立ち向かうこともできません） at odds and split asunder（asunder[アサンダァ]ばらばらに。対立し、ばらばらに分裂した状態では）.
To those new States whom we welcome（これから新たに迎える国々に対しては）to the ranks of the free（自由主義世界に）, we pledge our word（約束します） that one form of colonial control（植民地支配という1つの形が） shall not have passed away（過ぎ去ってはならない） merely to be replaced（単にすりかわって） by a far more iron tyranny（もっと過酷な鉄の専制）. We shall not always expect to find them supporting our view（我々の考えがいつも支持されるとは期待していません）. But we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom（ただ、彼らが自らの自由を強く求めることを願っています） -- and to remember（また忘れないことを願います） that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger（sought power 権力を求める。虎にまたがって権力を握ろうとする者は） ended up inside（結局虎に喰われるという昔からの教訓を）.
To those peoples in the huts and villages across the globe（世界中の村や（huts あばら家）に住む人々→世界の人口の半分を占める） struggling to break the bonds of mass misery（集団的困窮から抜け出そうと懸命にもがいている人々に対しては）, we pledge our best efforts（最大限の努力をすることを誓います） to help them help themselves（彼らの自助努力を支援するために）, for whatever period is required（どれだけ長い期間かかるとしてもです）, [not] because the Communists may be doing it（これは共産主義者がそうしているからでも）, [not] because we seek their votes（票集めを狙っているからでもなく）, [but] because it is right（ただそれが正しいことだからです）. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor（もし自由な社会で多数の貧困者を救うことができなければ）, it cannot save the few who are rich（少数の富裕者を救うこともできません）.
To our sister republics south of our border（国境の南に位置する同朋諸国に対しては）, we offer a special pledge（特別な誓いを立てましょう） -- to convert our good words into good deeds（有言実行を実践すべく） in a new alliance for progress（発展のための新しい同盟を結び） -- to assist free men and free governments（自由な民衆と自由な政府を尽力することを） in casting off the chains of poverty（貧困の連鎖から抜け出せるように）. But this peaceful revolution of hope cannot become the prey of hostile powers（平和的革命の希望が敵対勢力の餌食（prey[プゥレイ]）になるようなことがあってはなりません。）. Let all our neighbors know（このすべての近隣諸国に伝えましょう） that we shall join with them（我々は一致協力して） to oppose aggression or subversion（侵略行為や政権転覆の企みがあったとしても対抗する） anywhere in the Americas（南北アメリカ大陸のどこであろうが）. And let every other power know（そして、他の大国すべてに知らしめましょう） that this Hemisphere intends to remain the master of its own house（Hemisphere [ヘミスファア] 北半球。この大陸は自らの領土を自ら支配するのだということを）.
To that world assembly of sovereign states（世界中の主権国家の集まり）, the United Nations（である国連は）, our last best hope in an age（最後に残された希望の光です） where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace（戦争の手段が平和の手段をはるかに凌駕しているこの時代において）, we renew our pledge of support（我々は改めて誓います） -- to prevent it from becoming merely a forum for invective（invective [インヴェクティヴ] 罵り合い。国連をただの罵り合いの場にするのを避け）
） -- to strengthen its shield（盾とするべく努め） of the new and the weak（新しい国や弱い国の） and to enlarge the area（地域が増えるように力を尽くすことを） in which its writ may run（writ [ウゥリット] 公式書簡、憲章。国連憲章の及ぶ地域を）.
Finally（最後に）, to those nations who would make themselves our adversary（adversary [アドヴァーサゥリイ] 敵。我々に敵対する国家に対しては）, we offer not a pledge but a request（誓約ではなく要請をしたいと思います） -- that both sides begin anew the quest for peace（双方で新たに平和への道を進もうではないかと）, before（その前に） the dark powers of destruction（破壊的な力が） unleashed by science（科学によって解き放たれた） engulf all humanity in（engulf [エンガルフ] 沈没させる。人類を追い込む前に） planned or accidental（意図的にせよ偶発的にせよ） self-destruction（破滅に）.
We dare not tempt them with weakness（これは弱さからの要請ではありません）. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt（我々の軍備が十分であると確信しているからこそ） can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed（我々の軍備が十分であると確信しているからこそ）.
But neither can two great and powerful groups of nations take comfort from our present course（しかし現在のあり方では、二大陣営のどちらも安心することはできません） -- both sides overburdened by the cost of modern weapons（どちらの陣営も近代兵器の費用負担に苦しみ）, both rightly alarmed by the steady spread of the deadly atom（核どちらの陣営も兵器の着実な拡散に警告を受けつつ）, yet both racing to alter that uncertain balance of terror（alter [オルタ] 改める。不安定な恐怖の均衡を改めようと競争しているのです） that stays the hand of mankind's final war（stay the hand 行動を控える、やめる。人類の最終戦争を食い止めている（不安定な恐怖の均衡を））.
