The work God does is creative. He made heaven, earth, and all living creatures. He formed Adam and Eve in His image and knitted each of us together in our mother’s womb. His work is also powerful. Through His Son Jesus, He reconciled us to Himself and adopted us into His family. God’s work is ongoing, and Jesus is the One who holds all things together (Colossians 1:17).

神の御業を認識するためには、積極的かつ粘り強く祈る必要があります。キリスト中心の祈りは、私たちの焦点を主に絞ります。そうすれば、私たちは神の働きをより容易に認識し、神の御業にどう参加できるかが分かります。

In order to recognize God’s handiwork, we need to pray in an active, persistent manner. Christ-centered prayers narrow our focus to the Lord. Then we can more readily identify His actions and see how we are able to join Him in His work.

父なる神は、私たちの心と思いが神の意志に従うことを望んでおられます。自分の計画を追求すると、焦点が自分自身に移り、神を見失ってしまいます。しかし、従順な態度は、耳を傾け従う心構えとなります。神の言葉に定期的に集中すると、私たちの心は澄み渡り、神が何をなさっているかを理解する助けになります。これらの訓練を識別力と忍耐力と組み合わせると、神が私たちの人生と世界でどのように働いておられるかを発見する準備が整います。

The Father wants our heart and mind yielded to His will. Pursuing our own agenda shifts the focus to ourselves and makes us lose sight of Him. But a submissive attitude prepares us to listen and obey. Regularly concentrating on God’s Word will clear our mind and help us understand what He is doing. When we combine these disciplines with discernment and patience, we will have positioned ourselves to discover how God is working in our life and in our world.

God is still at work today. Ask the Lord to open your eyes to how He is working around you—and to refocus your heart and mind on Him.

Until the more recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, the Cuban Missile Crisis was probably the closest we have come, to World War III. In October 1962, there was a standoff between President Kennedy of the United States and Premier Khrushchev of the Soviet Union over planting missiles in Cuba. The crisis was averted because communication was established. It was decided to put one red telephone on the desk of the President of the United States, and another on the desk of the Premier of Soviet Russia.

The communication link was called, as it still is, the ‘*hotline*’. Communication is vital to all relationships. Setting aside time to build and nurture communication is essential. Jesus has given you a ‘hotline’ to God, but it is not just for emergency use – it is to be used all the time.

どうすればあなたの願いは叶えられるのでしょうか。詩篇作者のダビデはこう言っています。「主を喜べ。そうすれば、主はあなたの心の願いをかなえてくださる」（4節）。あなたが望むものを追い求めるのではなく、神を喜べば、主はあなたの心の願いをかなえてくださるでしょう。神に与えてもらうことは、自分で手に入れようとするよりもはるかに良いことです。神はこう約束しています。

How can your desires be fulfilled? The psalmist, David, says, ‘Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart’ (v.4). Rather than pursuing the things you desire, if you delight in God he will give you the desires of your heart. Letting God give you things is so much better than trying to get them for yourself. He promises:

1. 恐怖の中にある信仰

恐れやパニックを引き起こすような出来事がたくさんあるかもしれません。しかし、ダビデは「心配してはならない」（1、7b、8b 節）と 3 回繰り返しています。また、ねたむべきでもありません（1b 節）。むしろ、主に頼り、恐れを主に伝え、「主に信頼しなさい」（3 節）。信仰とは信頼することです。それは恐怖やパニックの反対です。

1. Faith in the midst of your fears

There may be lots going on that could make you afraid and even panic. But three times David repeats, ‘Do not fret’ (vv.1,7b,8b). Nor are we to be envious (v.1b). Rather, turn to the Lord, bring him your fears, and ‘trust in the Lord’ (v.3). Faith is trust. It is the opposite of fear and panic.

2. 決断の導き

「あなたの道を主にゆだねなさい」（5節）。これが導きの鍵です。決断を神に委ね、行動を神に求め、神を信頼してください。私は自分の人生で何度もこの聖句を使ってきました。また、特に仕事や結婚相手について決断に苦しんでいる他の人と一緒に祈るときにも使ってきました。

2. Guidance in your decisions

‘Commit your way to the Lord’ (v.5). This is the key to guidance: bring the decision to God, ask him to act and trust in him. Over and over again, I have used this verse in my own life. I have also used it when praying with others who are struggling with decisions, especially about their jobs or potential marriage partners.

It is a simple three-part process. First, to commit the decision to God in prayer, asking him to open the doors that are right for you, and to close the ones that are not right. Second, thereafter trust that he is in control. Third, watch in faith for him to act as you continue on your ‘way’, in the expectation that God will act.

3. 心の平安

神へのホットラインを活用しましょう。「主の前に静まり、忍耐して主を待ち望む」時間を設けましょう（7節）。これが「義なる報いが暁のように輝く」源です（6節）。これが、いらだちや怒りを避け、平安と希望を見出す方法です（8～9節）。

3. Peace in your heart

Make use of your hotline to God. Set aside time to ‘be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him’ (v.7). This is the source that makes your ‘righteous reward shine like the dawn’ (v.6). This is the way to avoid fretting and anger and to find peace and hope (vv.8–9).

主よ、私があなたを信頼する間、恐れや嫉妬や怒りから私を守ってください。今日、私はあなたに私の道を委ねたいと思います。神様、私はあなたの御前に静まります。私はあなたを喜びます。

Lord, keep me from fear, envy and anger as I trust in you. Today I want to commit my way to you. I will be still before you God. I will delight in you.

Listen to the word of God

Your hotline to God involves two-way communication. It involves both speaking to God in prayer and listening to his words. This was the secret of Jesus’ own ministry. No one has ever had a more powerful ministry than Jesus. No one has ever had more demands on his time and energy than Jesus.

誰もがイエスの助けを求めました。人々がシモンの姑を癒すためにイエスの助けを求めた時、イエスは彼女を癒しました。イエスは連れて来られたすべての人に手を置いて癒しました。イエスは福音を宣べ伝え続けました（4:44）。イエスは重い皮膚病の人々を癒しました。群衆は増えて、「大勢の人がイエスの教えを聞き、また病気を癒してもらおうとやって来ました」（5:15）。

Everyone wanted his help. When they asked for Jesus’ help to heal Simon’s mother-in-law, he healed her. He laid hands on all who were brought to him and healed them. He kept on preaching the gospel (4:44). He healed those with leprosy. The crowds increased; ‘crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their illnesses’ (5:15).

イエスはどのようにしてそれができたのでしょうか。その秘密は何だったのでしょうか。その力の源は何だったのでしょうか。「夜が明けると、イエスは寂しい所へ出て行かれた」（4:42）。「イエスは寂しい所へ退いて祈っておられた」（5:16）。神とのホットラインを通じて元気を取り戻さなければ、神の王国での生活の要求に決して対処することはできません。

How could he do it? What was his secret? What was the source of his power? ‘At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place’ (4:42). ‘Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed’ (5:16). You will never cope with the demands of life in the kingdom of God unless you are being recharged through your hotline to God.

群衆はイエスに押し寄せて「神の言葉をもっとよく聞こうと」していました（1節、MSG）。イエスは船を説教壇にして群衆に教えました（3節）。イエスを通して神の言葉を聞いたことで、シモン・ペテロの人生は変わりました。

The crowd was pushing in on Jesus ‘to better hear the Word of God’ (v.1, MSG). Using the boat for a pulpit Jesus taught the crowd (v.3). Hearing the word of God through Jesus transformed Simon Peter’s life.

ペテロは大漁を収めただけでなく、神が彼の人生で何を成し遂げられるかという大きなビジョンも掴みました。3年後、彼は説教を行い、1日で3,000人が改宗しました。彼は、2,000年後に20億人以上の人々がイエスの名を告白する基礎を築きました。この演じられたたとえ話から私たちはどんな教訓を学べるでしょうか。

Peter not only caught a big catch of fish, he also caught a big vision of what God could do with his life. Three years later, he preached a sermon in which 3,000 people were converted in one day. He laid the foundations whereby 2,000 years later over two billion people profess the name of Jesus. What lessons can we learn from this acted-out parable?

1. 可能性は無限大

彼らはまだ魚を捕まえていなかったが、捕まえられるものはたくさんあった。ガリラヤ湖には、まるで1エーカーもの間、海を固く覆うほどの魚の群れがいた。

1. The potential is vast

They had not caught any fish but there were plenty to catch. In the Sea of Galilee there were phenomenal shoals of fish that covered the sea as if it were solid for as much as an acre.

Although cleaning nets is important for fishermen, the primary purpose is to catch fish. The primary task of the church is mission. Jesus says, ‘Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch’ (v.4). There are so many people who need to hear the message about Jesus.

2. イエスに不可能なことは何もない

2. Nothing is impossible with Jesus

Peter’s first reaction was negative and pessimistic. He didn’t think it would work, ‘We’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything’ (v.5a). However, possibly after a long pause, he says, ‘But because you say so, I will let down the nets’ (v.5b). Jesus made what seemed impossible possible. ‘When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break’ (v.6).

3. 一人ではできず、協力してのみ可能

「そこで彼らは、もう一方の舟に乗っている仲間に合図して、助けに来るように言った。彼らは来て、両方の舟に水をいっぱいに積んだので、舟は沈み始めた」（7節）。協力は宣教の鍵です。教会外の人々にとって、不一致は非常に不快です。協力と一致は非常に魅力的です。

3. It cannot be done alone but only in partnership

‘So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink’ (v.7). Partnership is the key to mission. Disunity is so off-putting to those outside the church. Partnership and unity are very attractive.

4. It is a vision worth going for

Peter’s first reaction was to sense his own unworthiness: ‘Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!’ (v.8). At the same time, he and the others were astonished at the catch of fish (v.9). They must have been very daunted but Jesus said, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people’ (v.10). They saw it was a vision worth going for: ‘So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him’ (v.11).

主よ、私にあなたへのホットラインを与えてくださり感謝します。イエスのように、あなたとともに孤独を求め、寂しい場所に引きこもり、祈り、あなたの言葉を聞くことができるよう助けてください。

Lord, thank you that you have given me a hotline to you. Help me, like Jesus, to seek solitude with you, to withdraw to lonely places, pray and hear your words.

Prioritise communication with God

旧約聖書、特に今日の聖書箇所を読むと、かなり衝撃を受けるかもしれません。簡単な答えや、口先だけの簡単な説明はありません。理解しにくいことがたくさんあります。理解できることに焦点を当てた方が良いかもしれません。

As you read the Old Testament and particularly some of the passages for today, you may find them quite shocking. There are no easy answers or glib explanations. There are many things that are hard to understand. Perhaps it is better to focus on what we can understand.

この箇所で明らかなのは、神との関係と神と過ごす時間の重要性です。「主に喜ばれる」という表現が何度も出てきます（15:7、10、13、24）。「償い」をするためには捧げ物が必要でした（25節）。「償い」は神と一体になることにつながります。そのためには赦しが必要です（25-26、28節）。これらすべては、イエスがご自身を捧げられることへの備えでした。イエスがご自身を捧げることで、完全な赦しと償いがもたらされ、神とのホットラインを持つことができるのです。

What is clear in this passage is the vital importance of your relationship with God and spending time with him. The expression ‘pleasing to the Lord’ appears several times (15:7,10,13,24). Offerings were required to make ‘atonement’ (v.25). ‘At-one-ment’ leads to us being at one with God. For this, forgiveness is required (vv.25–26,28). All this was preparing us for Jesus’ offering of himself, which brings total forgiveness and atonement so that you can have a hotline to God.

Jesus transformed our understanding of the Sabbath. The people of God placed huge importance on the Sabbath as a day set aside to spend time with God. The Sabbath rules may not still apply, but the Sabbath principle of taking time out to rest and spend time with God still stands.

The purpose of Sabbath rest is to force us to pause and stop ‘the lusts of [our] own hearts and eyes’ (v.39) becoming our idols. You are supposed to be consecrated to God (v.40) and God wants to bring you near to himself (16:9). It is because of the importance of this relationship that any threat to it, caused by insolence or rebellion (vv.1–2), is taken so seriously (vv.1-35).

Judah has chosen loyalty to foreign gods and kings over trusting their God to protect and provide for their nation. So God tells Jeremiah to announce that an army will invade Judah’s borders (Jeremiah 4:5-17). If God’s people do not want him as their protector, he will give them exactly what they ask. Despite how much it pains him, he will leave them to the powers they have chosen for themselves (Jeremiah 4:18-22). And the world, as God’s people know it, will be destroyed (Jeremiah 4:23-26).

But God tells Jeremiah that if he can find just one person in all Judah willing to listen and obey, he will stop his coming judgment (Jeremiah 5:1). So he goes to Israel’s religious leaders, hoping that among those devoted to God’s words and laws he might find an obedient person and secure God’s forgiveness. But there isn’t one. Judah’s leaders know they are breaking God’s commands, don’t care, and don’t believe God will judge them (Jeremiah 5:2-6). Jeremiah quickly learns that Judah has abandoned all fidelity to God and even love of one another. Judah is full of not just idolatry but evil, injustice, exploitation, and fraudulence from the top down (Jeremiah 5:26-31). To Jeremiah’s horror, he realizes there is not one good person left in Judah, and nothing will stop God’s judgment (Jeremiah 5:7-13).

Failing to find one good person, God tells Jeremiah that every one of his prophecies will come to pass. Soon, an army will overshadow God’s people, strip them of their wealth, and drag them into exile (Jeremiah 5:14-25; Jeremiah 6:22-30). Jerusalem is so oppressive and violent that God will command the oncoming armies to forgo sleep and level their capital before another day dawns on their evil (Jeremiah 6:1-9). But Judah is so hard-hearted that they refuse to listen even when God tells them to run from his judgment and escape Jerusalem (Jeremiah 6:10-21). But despite this stubbornness, faithlessness, and evil, God says his love for his people has not been entirely exhausted. And he promises that some will survive his coming judgment and that one day his protection will be offered again (Jeremiah 4:27; 5:18).

God told Jeremiah that he would forgive Judah’s sins and stop his coming justice if he could find one good person who would listen to and obey God, but Jeremiah couldn’t. Sadly, not much has changed. The New Testament tells us there has never been one good person who has fully kept God’s commands (Romans 3:23). If God’s promises of protection, care, and forgiveness all rest on finding just one good human, humanity should expect only judgment.

But despite humanity’s chronic stubbornness, faithlessness, and evil, God, in love, sent his son Jesus to be born as a human and to listen and obey God in a way his people never could (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:1-5). He would be the one good man through whom God’s people would be forgiven, escape judgment, and receive his loving provision. Jesus lived a life of loyalty and obedience to God’s commands and desires (John 5:19; Luke 22:42). Jesus was the man Jeremiah was looking for! Jesus is the man who would save God’s people from their judgment.

But justice for humanity’s evil needed to be paid to protect us from God's judgment. So Jesus was forced outside the city of Jerusalem, killed, and exiled to a grave (John 19:16-17). He was destroyed just as Jeremiah predicted God’s people would be. But now that justice has been done there is no more threat of condemnation (Romans 8:1). Because of Jesus’ death, God’s people escape judgment, are forgiven, and promised God’s provision and care. In Jesus, we always have our one good man. Whenever we need God’s forgiveness, we have it—in Jesus. For all those who trust and are loyal to the good man Jesus, God promises that all judgment is paid, all disobedience forgiven, and everything we need will be provided.

Waves to Warriors

We often think of the disciples as these amazing men, with chiseled jaws and stained-glass lives. Bold men, brazenly taking a stand for Christ. How compelling! How brave! How…completely unrelatable. It's comforting to know that they weren't always so heroic. These mighty men of God were at one time fair-weather warriors. They too, struggled, had issues, and were afraid. And their struggles with trust would continue all the way to the night when Jesus was arrested and all the apostles ran for their lives—after pledging allegiance to Him.

Just a few hours before climbing into their boat, the disciples had seen Jesus provide. Now they're in the middle of the lake, no longer warriors, but fully freaked. While all this is happening, Jesus is on a mountaintop praying. Mark's Gospel tells us He saw the disciples "straining at rowing." I bet you anything the disciples had lost sight of Jesus—but He never lost sight of them.

What storms are in your life? What difficulties are you straining at? Maybe you feel like a fair-weather warrior, brave until the clouds roll in. Maybe you're even a fair-weather follower, struggling to follow Jesus at all when things are difficult. Watch as these men flounder and fail, but remember what they were like in the end.

The point of trials is not to bash us, but to build us up. Sometimes God saves us from the storm, and other times through the storms. Jesus came—He walked to them. Why did He walk when He could have shot off the mountain and flew in? He wanted to show them that the thing they feared the most, the very wind and waves He walked on, were not scary to Him. What scares you the most? He'll walk all over it.

The disciples' hard experiences turned them into worshipers. As they kept getting in the boat, obeying Christ even though they knew there might be trials ahead, a lifestyle of worship turned them into warriors. Whatever you're going through, God will use it in your life to make you more like Him.

What do you do when your heart is faint? Where do you turn? Rather than settling in the lowlands of worry, anxiety, or insecurity, you can seek the higher place of security in God. This is the gentle, confronting whisper of Sabbath—the Lord is listening to His people, even from the ends of the Earth, so when you call on Him, He is ready to respond. Do not be dismayed if you feel you have slipped away from God's security or that life's circumstances are looming and you cannot find your way back to resting in Him. Like David, cry out to God to help guide you back to Himself, the Rock. He is your refuge and your strong tower against anything that may threaten to come against you.
