元海上自衛隊の医師で日本人１２人目の宇宙飛行士の金井宣茂さんら３人が乗り組み、１７日、中央アジアのカザフスタンから打ち上げられたロシアの宇宙船「ソユーズ」は、地球を周回しながら、国際宇宙ステーションに近づいていて午後４時半すぎの段階でその距離は、５０キロ以下となっています。
ソユーズは、このあとも慎重に接近を続け、午後５時４３分に、国際宇宙ステーションにドッキングする予定です。国際宇宙ステーションへのドッキングは、宇宙船の位置や速度が正しいか確認しながら自動で行われ、異常が見つかった場合は、手動に切り替えて対応することになっています。ドッキングに成功し、安全が確認されれば金井さんらは日本時間の午後７時３５分に、出入り口の扉を開いて国際宇宙ステーションに入りおよそ半年間の長期滞在を始めます。
金井さんは、長期滞在の間、アルツハイマー病などのメカニズムの解明のためたんぱく質の結晶を作ったり、一般の人が宇宙に行く時代に備え、無重力や放射線などの宇宙環境が人体に与える影響を調べたりする実験を担当する予定です
