Ferrari Expo & Model Car Show 2008 (part 1)

毎年恒例のシカゴのフェラーリショー＆模型コンテストに行ってきました。今年はシカゴにいる友人宅に泊めてもらったので、一泊二日と比較的余裕のある日程でした。

今年はあいにく雨に見舞われてしまい、お客さんたちのフェラーリはきてませんでした。ガレージには 575 スーパーアメリカ、275 GTS、カリフォルニアスパイダー、288 GTO などがきてました。カリフォルニアスパイダーは時価３億円以上いきますかね？私の友人はあまり車のことはよくわからないので、何気なくドアを勝手に開けたりしてました（笑）。一番うれしかったのは、このディーラーのオーナーさんが持ってるカレラアバルトがみれたことです。ABC ブリアンツァのキットを持ってますが、Model Art誌の北澤さんの記事では結構手ごわい内容のようです。いつか作りたいですね。

コンテストの主催者のトムさん以外には、今年は1/43のキットを売ってる業者さんはいませんでした。いつも来ている M&M Models も 4/9 から 4/14 まで休業となってます。同じ日に開催されてたNNL East にでも行ったのかな？開いていたらお店にも行ってみたかったのですが、残念。

業者さんのテーブルでアルファロメオの 2900 シリーズの本を見つけました。値段を聞いてみたら、なんと 1750 ドル。４回も聞きなおしてしまいました（笑）。今アマゾンで調べてみたら、2500 ドルからスタートなので、実はお買い得だったみたいです（買えねー）。ちなみにこちらのマセラティの本は 2000 ドルだそうです。

I went to the annual Ferrari Expo & Model Car show in Chicago. This year I stayed at my friend's house rather than flying in red-eye, so I had relaxed schedule.

Unfortunately we had rain there so was no customer's Ferrari. In the garage there were 575 Superamerica,275 GTS, California Spider and 288 GTO among other exotics. My friend who doesn't know about these car well just casually opened the door of the California Spider, which probably is worth more then three million dollars :) I was glad to see Carrera Abarth in person. I have ABC Brianza kit of this car - someday I want to build this too.

There were no 1/43 kit was for sale, except several at Tom's table who's the organizer of the contest. M&M Models who's been joining this show wasn't there either. Their site said they were closed from 4/9 to 4/14. I wonder they were out of town for NNL East that was held on the same day. Too bad, I wanted to visit their shop if they were open.

I found a book about Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 series on one of the dealers' table. The book was so expensive ($1750) that I had to confirm the price four times :) The book is also avaialble at Amazon for $2500, so it was indeed a deal (way out of my reach). BTW this Maserati book costs even more ($2000).

NNL West 2008 (part 3)

会場からの帰りはライトレールを使って帰りました。片道 $1.75で空港近くの駅まで移動、そのあと無料シャトルバスで空港まで送ってもらえます。時間はタクシーの倍くらいかかりますが、料金は当然ずっと安いです（タクシーはチップ込みで$20くらい）。来るときもこれを使うつもりだったんですが、どこから乗るのかわかりませんでした。

で、写真のものを記念に買って帰りました。Grand Prix Models が発行している 4 Small Wheels の 1992 年 3月号、Lindberg の 1/25 Auburn Speedster と gpma.org の帽子です。4 Small Wheels の真ん中にはアルファ 8C 2900 やフェラーリ 642/643 のモデルなどが載った BBR のカラーのカタログが一緒に閉じられてます。Vroom の Bizzarrini P538 や、High Tech Models のポルシェ 356 のエンジンキットが新製品リストに載っていたり（両方ともキット持ってます）して、当時の様子がしのばれます。プロバンスは1600番台のキットがリリースされている頃で、試験的にはじめたという 1/24 のジャガー D タイプのキットも載ってます。

Auburn Speedster は私がはじめて買ったアメプラです。10ドルで売られてたのを見せてもらって、うーん、ってうなってたら5ドルでいいよ、と言われたのをさらに 4ドルに値切りました(笑)。

GPMA は普段からメールグループでお世話になっているので、会場に行ったら寄付がてら帽子を買おうと思ってました。ところがどこにいるのかなかなか見つかりません。ショーも終わりの頃やっと見つけたと思ったら、さっき Auburn Speedster のキットを買ったテーブルじゃありませんか。私はいったいどこを見てたんでしょう。GPMA のテーブルだとわかってたら素直に10ドル払ってたのに。ケビンさん、すんません。

I used Light Rail to get back to airport. The one way fare is $1.75 and the train takes you to the station near the airport. Then you can take free shuttle bus to the airport. It takes twice longer time than using taxi, but it's much cheaper (taxi costs about $20 including tip). I was going to use the Light Rail in the morning, but coudln't figure out where it is.

From the show I brought back the items in the picture. March 1992 issue of 4 Small Wheels from Grand Prix Models, 1/25 scale Lindberg kit of Auburn Speedster and gpma.org cap. In the middle of 4 Small Wheels, BBR's color catalog is attached. It shows several models such as Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B or Ferrari 642/643. Among the new products release are Bizzarini P538 by Vroom or Porsche 356 Engine by High Tech Models (I have both kits). Provence Moulage kits are in #1600s and 1/24 Jaguar D type that is released to test the market. It was fun to see how the market looks like more than 15 years ago.

Auburn Speedster is the first American plastic automotive kit I bought. It was sold for $10 but the seller offered me $5 discount. I finally agreed to buy it for $4 :)

During the show I was looking for GPMA table to buy their cap to support the group. Finally I found them and it turned out to be the guy who I bought the Speedster kit. I guess I was too concentrated on the kit so I didn't see what they were wearing. Sorry Kevin, I would paid $10 for the kit if I knew it was on GPMA table.

NNL West 2008 (part 2)

そのほか眼を引いた作品は John Teresi さんの作品群。ホットロッド、ドラッグレーサー、カスタムバイクなどさまざまなジャンルから数十点展示されてました。美しい塗装と細かい点まで丁寧に工作されているのが印象的です。キャデラック V16 タウンカーのウッドトリムなどはドライブラシで塗装されてますが、本物と見まがうような素晴らしい仕上がりでした。クリアコートは実車用の３液混合タイプで、基本的には研ぎ出しなしだそうです。一番すごいと思ったのは本職はフィギュアを作る仕事なのだそうで、これらは趣味でやっているとのこと。大したものです。

あと、'57 UFO というタイトルのついてるモデル、いいキャラクターでとても気に入りました。Yahoo のメールグループで聞いたところでは映画フィフス.・エレメントに出てきたものらしいですが、ご存知のかたいらっしゃいますか？

1/43モデルですが、私と Mike Siegman さん、あとジオラマ仕立てになってるのがいくつかくらいで、あまり見ませんでした。業者さんのテーブルも見て回りましたが、M＆S Hobbies のテーブルでみたメーカー不明のブガッティEB110のキット一個だけでした。

The models built by Mr. John Teresi were also great. There were literally dozens of models from various genre such as hot rod, drag racer or custom motorcycles. The paint job was just perfect and details are very clean. The wood trims of 。Cadillac V16 Town Car were painted by dry brushing then clear coated and they looked really convincing. He uses three parts automotive clear and doesn't have to polish the clear coat. I thought he was processional. I was right and wrong. His real job is making figures and building car models are his hobby.

Also 、the model titled '57 UFO was very attractive. Some Yahoo GPMA mailgroup member told me that it may be from the movie "The Fifth Element". Can someone confirm this?

There weren't many 1/43 scale models. Probably less than 20, most were done by Mr. Mike Siegman who also brought his model to Ferrari Expo last year. I quickly checked the vendor tables, but only I could found was a kit of Bugatti EB110 by unknown maker at M＆S Hobbies table.

NNL West 2008 (part 1)

先週末、カリフォルニアはサンタクララのコンベンションセンターで開催された NNL West 2008 に行ってきました。写真はこちら。朝早くの飛行機でサンノゼ空港に11時ごろに到着、タクシーで10分ほどで会場に着きます。

入場料10ドルを払って会場に入ると、右側にモデル展示のためのテーブルが並び、左側には各種ディーラーのテーブルが並んでます。入り口で参加者のための書類に記入して展示するモデルにつけるラベルをもらい、自分の好きなところにモデルを並べます。9時から4時までのショーの間に３回セミナーがあり、その他子供たちがキットを組み立てる "Make 'n Take" というイベントもあります。

予想はしてましたが、８割以上ははカスタムカー、マッスルカー、ホットロッド、ドラッグレーサーなどわたしの守備範囲外のモデルです。それでも丁寧に作ってあるモデルなどには感心させられます。Jerry さんの車は昨年の GSL でジェラルド・ウィングローブ賞をとったもので、(確か) Scale Models にも載ったことがある作品です。 キットの部品はほとんど真鍮に置き換えられていて、ボディパネルはたたき出し、部品は銀でロウ付けされてます。ロウ付は強度がハンダ付けに比べて高く、接合部も真鍮と同じ色になるのが大きな利点だそうです。制作期間は6ヶ月間、ひとつのモデルに集中して作るのがスタイルだそうです。

ところで、今回はデジカメでビデオを撮ってきました。会場の雰囲気をお伝えできればよいのですが。

A week ago I visited NNL West 2008 held at Santa Clara Convension Center in Carifornia. Here are the pictures from the show. I flew in San Jose airport around 11AM, then took 10 minutes drive in taxi to the show.

The entrance fee was $10. On the right there are tables for displaying models, and vendors tables on the other side. An show entrant fills a form at the entrance to receive tags for each model, then places his models anywhere he wants. During the show (9AM to 4PM) there are three sessions for modelling tips, and an event "Make 'n Take" in which kids can build car models with parents.

More than 80% of the models are custom cars, mustle cars, hotrods and drag racers which are pretty much out of my interest. Still there are many great models built with passions and skills. 。Mr. Cardinal's car won Gerald Wingrove Scratchbuilding Award at GSL the last year, and (I think) it was featured in Scale Auto magazine. Almost all parts have been replaced with handmade brass panels, then the parts are silver-brazed. He explained me that brazing makes much stronger joint compared to soldering, and the color of joint is almost same as brass. It took six months for him to finish, and he works only one model at a time.

I used Movie Maker that comes with Windows XP to edit these video clips. This is the first time I tried and I found it very useful - I can do fade in / out and subtitle.

Ferrari Expo and NNL West

しばらく前ですが、毎年恒例のシカゴの Ferrari Expo ＆模型コンテストの要項が発表されました。今年は完成したモデルを持って参加できるのがうれしいです。去年のショーの様子はこちらとこちらです。写真は２年前のコンテストに持っていったモデル２つです。

あと、NNL (National Nameless Luminaries) West が 3月1日 にカリフォルニアのサンタクララで開催されます。こちらは車モデルならジャンルを問わず何でも集まれ！というショーです。来場客が選んだベストモデルなどのいくつかの賞があるだけで、コンテストではありません。初めてですが、こちらも行ってみようと思ってます。妻にはまだ話してませんが、もう飛行機のチケット取ってしまいました。へへ。

A while ago, there was an announcement of the annual Ferrari Expo & Model contest in Chicago. This year I'll be able to visit the show with some finished models. Here are my reports of the show in last year (part 1 & part 2). I entered the contest two years ago with the models in the picture.

Also NNL (National Nameless Luminaries) West will be held on March 1st in Santa Clara, Carifornia. This is rather a meeting for car modelers than a contest. I'm planning to visit this show for the first time. I've alread got my ticket even I haven't talked to my wife about this yet :)

Kirkland Concours d'Elegance 2007

シアトルの東、カークランド市で先週末開催された、カークランド・コンコース・デレガンス 2007 に行ってきました。会場の写真はこちらです。このブログの一番下に、今回写真を撮ってきた車のリストがありますので、そちらもご覧ください。今年初めてこのイベントがあるのを知ったのですが、今回で５回目と比較的新しいイベントです。

個人的に目玉だったのは Talbo-Lago T-150-C-SS Teardrop です。快晴の空の下に銀とメタリックブルーに輝く車は、まさに宝石のようでした。そのほかにもブガッティ、ドラージュ、ドライエ、オーバーンスピードスターなど素晴らしい車を自然光の下で、しかも間近で見られる貴重な機会でした。有名なぺブルビーチのコンコース・デレガンス（まだいったことないです）に比べればさすがに規模は小さいのでしょうが、自宅から車で１５分くらいでこれる便利なところで、これだけの車が拝めるというのはありがたいことです。

The fifth annual Kirkland Concours d'Elegance 2007 was held last Sunday in Kirkland, east of Seattle. This was the first time I joined the event. Here are the pictures from the event. The list of the cars is at the end of this post.

The most interesting car for me was Talbo-Lago T-150-C-SS Teardrop. This jem was shining in silver and metalic blue under the clear sky. There are other magnificent cars such as Bugatti, Delage, Delahaye, Aubrun speedster. It was really nice to see them very close under natural light. Although this event is not as big as the one in Pebble Beach, I really appreciate that they held this event with cars of this caliber at this convenient location (15 minutes drive from my home).

2007 Model Contest at Galaxy Hobby

先週土曜日に毎年恒例の Galaxy Hobby での模型コンテストに行ってきました。写真はこちらです。今回私の目を引いたのは、1/72 の飛行艇(BV-222 Wiking)と 1/48 の戦闘機(Ki-84 疾風)でした。帆船の模型も時間がかかってそうでした。疾風は 1/72 以上の軍用プロペラ機部門２位でしたが、個人的には１位の1/32 Ju-87 スツーカよりよくできてたと思います。

でっかいカメラを持っていって写真を撮っていたら、２人ほど自分の作品を撮ってほしいという人がいました(アキュラ・インテグラ・カスタムとシボレーのピックアップトラック）。今回マクロレンズを持っていくのを忘れていて、近づきすぎて何枚かはピンボケになってしまいました。

私は４３を作り始めてからずっとそればっかりですが、たまにはミリタリー物とか作ってみたいなあと思います。といっても小学生の時に作ったのが最後なので、二十数年は経ってます。そのころは 1/72 の飛行機とか 1/700 のウォーターラインシリーズなんて作ってました。

I went to the annual model contest at Galaxy Hobby last Saturday. The pictures are here. The models I liked was 1/72 flying boat (BV-222 Wiking) and 1/48 prop fighter (Ki-84 Hayate). The sailing ship models looked quite well done. My pick of the model of the contest is the Hayate, though it ended up the second place in Over 1/72nd Military Prop class, next to 1/32 Ju-87 Stuka.

A couple of people wanted me to take pictures of their models (Acura Integra Custom and Chevy pick up truck). I forgot to bring macro lens with me, so some pictures are out of focus when I was too close to the models.

I've been building 1/43rd model past few years, but sometimes I want to build other subject such as military models. The last time I built such models was more than two decades ago when I was 5th grader. I used to build 1/72nd WWII prop planes and 1/700 military ships.

Ferrari Expo & Model Car Show 2007 #2

今年のモデルコンテストは去年よりもエントリー数がだいぶ増えていました。このコンテストには長く続いて欲しいので、うれしい限りです。私もブログのアップデートする時間も惜しんでモデルを作ってましたが、残念間に合いませんでした。

今回のコンテストの結果はこちらです。私が気に入ったのは Embiricos Bentley や、Ferrari TR58 のほかに、主催者の Tom さんのブガッティ 57C などです。ベントレーの塗装が綺麗だったので作った人に聞いたところ、Model Master の Gun Metal Metalizer をベースに、実車用の２液混合タイプのクリア（ウレタンってことでしょうか）を吹いたのだそうです。

There were more models in the contest than the last year, that was a good news. I want this event to be successful and growing in the years to come. I spent all my spare time on building models, even sarcrificing time for updating this blog. But unfortunately I couldn't finish them.

The results of the contest is here. I especially liked Embiricos Bentley,Ferrari TR58 and Bugatti 57C that was being built by Tom Tanner who organized the contest. The paint job of the Bentley was excellent, so I asked how the builder did it. He used Gun Metal Metalizer by Model Master as the base coat, then two part automotive clear is splayed and hand polished.

Ferrari Expo & Model Car Show 2007 #1

今年も行ってきましたシカゴのショーです。写真はこちら。今回は夜早めの便で出て、朝の五時にシカゴのO'Hare 空港に着きました。レンタカーを借りてシカゴのダウンタウンをふらふらと見物したあと朝食をとり、１０時半ごろに会場に到着しました。

駐車場に車を止めて、建物の後ろの入り口から会場に入ろうとすると360モデナスパイダーがずらりと勢ぞろいしているのが目に入りました。すんげー、これ全部売り物ですか？後で値段をウェブでチェックしましたが、一台20万ドルとかするんですねえ。あるところにはあるもんだ。

ガレージに入ると今年は Alfa Romeo TZ1 やデイトナ、F40 などがきてました。人気車種のデイトナや F40 はネットで簡単に写真が見つかるだろうと思って TZ の写真をたくさん撮ってきました。F40 の写真も撮ってきましたが、しつこくエンジン部分の写真を撮ってたら、どこかのおじさんに「組み立てるのかい」なんてからかわれちゃいました。なるほど、こつこつ部品を集めていったらいつかは組みあがるかも（ありえません）。他に珍しい車では５７５スーパーアメリカがありました。

今年はクラシックフェラーリのオーナーがいなかったのでしょうか、ガレージの中の車以外には見当たりませんでした。本当はアバルト・カレラも来る予定だったらしいですが、キャンセルになってしまったようです。非常に残念。

I visited the Ferrari Expo and model car contest in Chicago. Here are the pictures.This time I took earlier flight than the last year, arriving at Chicago O'Hare airport around 5 in the morning. I rented a car, drove to Chicago downtown and had few hours of sightseeing and breakfast. I finally arrived at the show around 10:30AM.

In the back of the building there were several Ferrari 360 Modena spiders lined up. Wow, are they all on sale (not that I'm going to buy one of them)? Each one would cost $200K or more...

In the garage Alfa Romeo TZ1, Ferrari 365 Daytona, Ferrari F40 were there among other classics. I guessed I can find lots pictures of popular cars such as Daytona or F40, so I mainly took pictures of TZ1. I also took some pictures of F40. Some guy teased me asking if I was going to putting together one :) Ferrari 575 superamerica was there, which is also rather a rare car.

Unfortunately I didn't see any other classic cars besides ones in the garage this year. I head that Abarth Carerra was supposed to be there, but the plan was cancelled for some reason. That's sad - that's one of the cars I want to see in person.

Seattle Auto Show 2006

先週末に毎年恒例の Seattle Auto Show にいってきました。写真はこちら。

Mercedes McLaren SLR やフォードのコンセプトカーなど興味を引かれる車が展示されてましたが、一番見れてうれしかったのは Abarth Zagato 750 です。実際に見るのは初めてですが、さすがに小さいですね。このアバルトは Lemay Museum というのがシアトルの南のタコマ市にあって、そこから何台か今回のショーに貸し出されていたうちの一台です。Lemay Museum は3000台以上の車を収蔵していて、毎年8月終わりごろに大きなイベントをするんだそうです。地元なのにぜんぜん知りませんでした。来年行ってみたいと思います。

そのほか変わったところでは The Green Car Company という地元の会社の出展がありました。ここでは電気自動車や、Smart など環境への負荷の少ない車を扱ってます。興味深いのはVW ゴルフのディーゼルエンジンバージョンと、トヨタのプリウスの比較でした。両者ほぼ同じくらいの燃費で、ゴルフがバイオディーゼルという植物由来の燃料を使った場合、排出する二酸化炭素の量がプリウスの１／４程度になるので、ゴルフのほうが環境にやさしいのだそうです。ふーん、勉強になりました。もっと前に知ってたら Volvo の代わりにディーゼルゴルフを買ったんですがねえ。ところで、ここの会社の配ってたステッカーの文句がなかなかいかしてました。

I went to annual Seattle Auto Show last weekend. The pictures are here.

There were interesting cars on display such as Mercedes McLaren SLR or Ford concept cars. But the most interesting one for me was Abarth Zagato 750. This car was one of the several cars loaned out from Lemay Museum, located in Tacoma city. The museum has more than 3000 cars and helds its show at the end of August. I've never been there, and planning to visit next year.

Other interesting exhibit was by The Green Car Company from Kirkland. They deal with so-called green cars such as electric cars or Smart. In their exhibit, there was comparison chart between VW Golf TDI (Diesel engine) and Toyota Prius. According to the comparison, Golf is greener since the gas milage is about the same, but Golf emits about a quarter of carbon dioxide what Prius does. That was educative. I would've bought Golf TDI instead of Volvo if I knew when I was looking for a new car. BTW their bumper sticker is neat. Way to go!
