Hummingbird in snow

数日前にちらちらと今年最初の雪が降りましたが、今日はドカ雪で、毎度のことながらシアトルの道路は大混乱です。今年はラ・ニーニャ現象のせいで大雪になると早くから言われてましたが、そのとおりになりそうです。

写真はハミングバード・フィーダーにやってきたハチドリ。ハチドリってのは熱帯にしかいないもんだと思ってましたが、アラスカ南部くらいまでいるそうです。くちばしが特殊な形をしているので、えさが少ない冬の間は何を食べて暮らしているんでしょうね。

Few days ago we had first fall of snow. Today we had a lot and the roads in Seattle have been very chaotic. It's been said we'll have cold winter in Seattle because of La Nina.

In spite of the bad weather we have constant visits of hummingbirds. I thought they live only in tropics but their habitat goes up to southern Alaska. Their needle like beak makes me wonder what they eat during winter time.

Scorched in Seattle

皆様いかがお過ごしでしょうか。シアトルは今記録的な暑さになってます。

写真は妻の車の温度計ですが、華氏１０６度（セ氏４１度）となってます。私は日中クーラーの利いたオフィスにいるので問題ないですが、家にはクーラーがないので、妻がバテ気味になってます。ショッピングモールや図書館なども避暑に来る人たちで混雑してるそうです。今日がピークで今週いっぱい暑い日が続くようです。

It's been record-breaking hot in Seattle last few days.

As you can see in the picture, the thermometer says 106F (or 41C). I work in air-conditioned office during day but my wife gets grumpy as our house doesn't have air conditioning. Shopping malls and libraries are crowded with people trying to escape from the heat wave. The weather forcast says it's going to be hot till the end of this week.

Deeply Snowed in Seattle

先週の火曜日から連日のように降り続いた雪が、積もり積もってこんなになりました。写真は我が家のデッキですが、高さ３０センチのワインのビンがすっかり埋まってしまってます。シアトルに１５年住んでますが、都市部でこんな積雪を見たのは初めてです。

子供たちは雪遊びができて大喜びですが、車の事故は増えるし、学校が休校になってしまって子供の面倒を見なければいけないし、ゴミ回収は来なくなってしまうしと、大人にはあまりいいことありません。

We have been having snow since last Tuesday and the snow accumulated this much. In the picture of the deck of my house, you can see the tip of a wine bottle which is about one foot (30cm) in height. I've been living in Seattle for 15 years but I've never seen this much of snow in city area.

Kids are happy to play in the snow, but for adults this means lots of traffic accidents, school closures and no garbage collection.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

毎年４月ごろに、シアトルから北へ一時間ほど行ったところにある Mount Vernon という町付近でチューリップ・フェスティバルがあります。平日に妻が子供らを連れて行ってきて、写真を撮ってきました。天気に恵まれて綺麗な写真が撮れたので、皆さんもご覧下さい。

In April, annual Tulip Festival is held near Mount Vernon, which is about one hour drive to north from Seattle. My wife took our kids there and took pictures of the scenaries. Hope you enjoy them too.

Kerry Park

日本では連日暑い日々が続いているようですが、皆様いかがお過ごしでしょうか。暑中お見舞い申し上げます。シアトルではここ数日曇りやら雨やらで、夜には１５℃くらいになってしまい、ただでさえ短い夏はどこに行ってしまったやら、という感じです。

先週から両親が孫の顔を見にやってきています。孫の相手をさせつつ観光につれまわっています。写真はよく絵葉書の写真スポットに使われるケリーパーク（Kerry Park）というところです。明日から金曜まで旅行なので、今週の製作記の更新が出来るかどうかわかりませんが、ご容赦のほど。

My parents are visiting us to see their grandchildren since last week. I've been taking them to various places in Seattle for sightseeing. Kerry Park is one of those places. You may have seen this scenary as a postcard picture.

I'll be out of town for a trip to Canada till this Friday, so there won't be much progress on building model this week (again).

Bellevue Art Fair

一週間ちょっと前の週末に毎年恒例の Bellevue Festival of the Arts というイベントに行ってきました。ベルビューダウンタウンにあるショッピングモールを中心に、近辺の道路も封鎖して２００人に及ぶアーティストたちが出店します。

イベントの中心になるベルビュースクエアでは、例年通り裸足のバイオリン奏者 Malcolm Watson のパフォーマンスが目を引きます。なぜ裸足なんでしょう？私の好きなミュージシャンの Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) もそうですが、イギリス出身の人には奇抜な人が多いのでしょうか。

駆け足で会場を２時間見て回って、以下の人たちの作品のプリントを買って帰りました。いろいろな作品を見て回るのは楽しいです。時間が許せば一日ゆっくり回りたいですね。

Taman Vanscoy: 物寂しくも心休まる感じが気に入りました。
Bob Kim: 彼の作品は数枚撮った写真の合成なのだそうです。子供ができる以前には妻と一緒にアメリカのいろいろな国立公園を巡りました。
Juli Adams: 私の趣味とはちょっと違うのですが、なにか不安げな不思議な魅力に惹かれました。

About a week ago I went to the event Bellevue Festival of the Arts. In shopping mall parking lots and on closed roads of downtown Bellevue, there were about 200 artist booths.

At Bellevue Square which is the center of the fair, Malcolm Watson was performing his violin with barefoot as usual. Another eccentric guy originally from England reminds me of my favorite musician Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull.

I could spend only two hours there. It's fun and inspring to see fine works of various artists. I bought some prints of the following artists.

Taman Vanscoy: Calm, somewhat lonely scenaries
Bob Kim: Each of his work consists of several pictures stitched together using computure. I like beautiful sceanries of American national parks. We used to visit various N.P. before we have kids.
Juli Adams: Bit out of my taste, but her works have their unique charm.

Cherry blossoms

私にしては珍しく３日連続ブログを更新です。家の前の桜が満開なので写真を撮りました。毎年ワシントン大学(University of Washington / UW)の桜を見に行っているのですが、今年は週末に晴れが少なかったり、予定が入っていたりで残念ながら見に行く機会がありませんでした。UW のページに桜の紹介と写真があります。

The cherry trees in my front yard are in full bloom. Every year we go University of Washington to see cherry blossoms, but we didn't have chance to visit there this year. You can find the pictures and information about the cherry trees in UW in their web site.

Samurai Noodle

一ヶ月ちょっと前にシアトル宇和島屋（日本・アジア系のスーパー）のところにできた Samurai Noodle に行ってきました。シアトルには日本人がいっぱい住んでいると思うのですが、なぜか日本のラーメンを出してくれるところがなかなかありません。

とんこつ、しょうゆ、つけ麺（魚だしスープ）、豆乳、豆乳とんこつ味といろいろありますが、今のところとんこつしか食べたことありません。福岡出身の妻に言わせると８０点、すりゴマがおいて無いと文句を言ってました。（後日改めて行ったときにはすりゴマがありました。）私も妻の実家にいくたびに博多ラーメンを食べてますが、本場に比べて麺が太めに感じました。地元の製麺所に作ってもらっているらしいので、その辺は仕方が無いですね。

最近は落ち着いたみたいですが、シアトル在住の日本人向けのサイト junglecity.com の掲示板でもこのお店に関していろいろ書き込みがありました。私は気に入っているので、お店には長く続いてほしいです。

Recently a restaurant "Samurai Noodle" opened in the same building where Seattle Uwajimaya (Japanese / Asian supermarket). They serve Japanese Ramen. Ramen (noodles in soup) is as popular in Japan, just like pizza in USA. I believe there are lots of Japanese living in Seattle, but for some reason there aren't many restaurant which serve Japanese Ramen. So I'm glad we have now this restaurant.

Here's a good report on this restaurant. The author of the blog wasn't too happy about the size of the portion. I'm not sure if he wasn't aware or it wasn't yet on the menu at that time, extra portions of noodles (Kaedama) can be ordered. That's a unique stuff of this particular style (Kusyu) of Japanese Ramen.

Floating house

友達の友達がフローティングハウス（水上ハウス？）に住んでいます。映画「めぐり逢えたら」(原題：Sleepless in Seattle) でトム・ハンクスが住んでたやつですね。その人が旅行に出かけている間、友達が家とペットの面倒を見ることになって、その間に家を見せてもらいました。

２階建てになっていて、一階はリビング＋台所と別の部屋、シャワーで、２階がベッドルームとベランダになってます。部屋数は少ないですが、各部屋が広いので、狭い感じは全然しません。デッキに出るとフローティングハウスのお隣さんのほか、ヨットも数隻停まってます。ヨットで暮らしている人たちもいるんだそうです。こういうところに住むのも変わってて面白そうですね。ところで写真に写ってるのは私の友達と娘です。

話は変わりますが、メインのサイトのサーバーが移動した際に、ホームページ作成ソフトでの編集ができなくなってしまいました。いまウェブホスティングの会社に問い合わせてますので、製作記のほうは今しばらくお待ちを。

A friend of my friend lives in a floating house, something like the one appeared in the movie "Sleepless in Seattle". While she's on her travel, my friend was asked to take care of the house and her cat. I had chance to visit the house while she's away.

The first floor of the two-story house consists of a living room, a kitchen, walk-in storage, a shower room and a bedroom / den. Upstairs there's another bedroom and a deck on top of the living room. There are only few rooms, but each room is large so it looks spacious. Outside of the house along with other floating houses, several boats can be seen. There are also people who lives in these boats.

BTW I have problem with updating my main site after my web hosting company moved it to another hosting server. I'm checking with them, but it may take few days before I can update my modeling diary.

Golf Club at Newcastle

妻の友達がお勧めのゴルフコースにあるレストランのブランチに行ってきました。

ゴルフコースは私の家の近くの丘の上にあるのですが、何せゴルフをしないので訪ねる機会がぜんぜんありませんでした。いってみるとすごく景色のいいところでしした。シアトルでこれだけ見晴らしのいいところは他にはなかなかないと思います。バイキング形式の料理もなかなかおいしかったです。値段はちょっと張りますが($28)、もしシアトルに観光にこられて時間があるなら寄られてもよいのではないでしょうか。当然夏にですよ。

My wife and I went had a brunch at the restaulant in a golf club as recommended by one of my wife's friends.

The golf club is on top of a hill near my house, but I never visited there as I don't play golf. The view was specutacular. I believe this is one of the best view in Seattle area. The dishes at the buffet were very good. It's rather expensive ($28), but you may want to check it out if you have chance to visit Seattle (in summer of course).
