Reckless Models

以前に行った日本の模型店のことを調べていたら、福岡のレクリスモデルスが2009年5月に倒産してしまっていたのがわかりました。私が行ったのが4月中ごろなので、倒産直前だったんですね。レクリスはメインが超高級車ディーラーで、そのほか車の模型の店舗・オンライン販売とそのほか飲食店もいくつか持っていたようです。と、当時の写真をアップするのを忘れてたのでアルバムにあげておきました。

写真のモデルはそのとき買ったＭＲコレクションの Ferrari 250 Nembo クーペです。20%オフセールで 2万円ちょっとだったと思います。もうすぐ Looksmart からも同じモデルがリリースされますね（もう出たかな？）

While I was searching information about the Japanese car model shops I visited, I found Reckless Models in Fukuoka went out of business in May 2009. My visit was just a few weeks before they close the door. Their main business was exotic car dealer. Their model shop was right next to the dealership. Also they had few restaurants as side business. I uploaded the pictures of the shop here.

The model of this post is Ferrari 250 Nembo Coupe by MR Collection. It was bit over 20000 YEN after 20%-off sale price. Looksmart has released the same model recently.

A Get Together at Auto Modeler's Cafe

４月に日本に帰ったときに、おささんにお願いして Auto Modeler's Cafe で４３モデラーのプチオフ会をしていただきました。写真はこちら。メンバーはおささん、Zモデルのゼツモさん、カミムラさん、tatsuro さんと錚々たる面々でした。集まったモデルは以下のとおり。どのモデルも素晴らしい仕上がりでした。もっといいカメラがあればよかったのですが残念。

このほかカミムラさんは以前にボシカ氏にもらったというスピードスターのシャーシと、野村 勲氏のフェラーリ 250GTO のボディも持ってきてくださいました。

モデラーの皆さんのほか、以前にブログにも書きました Y さんもいらっしゃいました。Yさんとお会いするのは 2007 年の冬以来でした。残念ながら Y さんの愛車のポルシェ356スピードスターは調子が悪くて見ることは出来ませんでしたが、代わりに Y さんの先輩のトヨタ 2000GT を見ることが出来ました。

会場となった Auto Modeler's Cafe は店内の半分がカフェ、残りの半分が模型店となってます。ご店主の三島さんは５年前に勤めてられた会社をやめてお店を始められたそうです。サイトやブログからもご店主の情熱が伝わってきますね。お店の営業のほかにも自社ブランドのキットの開発もされてます。F1M のフォーラムを覗いてみたら、オーストラリアの方が書いたAMC とモデル・ファクトリー・ヒロのレポートを見つけました。

予定していた３時間はあっという間に過ぎてしまいました。皆さん本当にありがとうございました。またお会いできる日を楽しみにしてます。

When I was in Japan last April, we had a get-together of 1/43rd model builders at Auto Modeler's Cafe. The pictures are here. Osa-san kindly organized the meeting. The other people there were Zetsumo-san (the owner of Z Model), Kamimura-san and Tatsuro-san. Everyone is senior builder and has been in this hobby much longer (more than 10 years) than me. We had the following superb models. I wish I had better camera.

Osa-san: Ferrari 250 GTO
Zetsumo-san: Benetton B188
Kamimura-san: Ferrari 250 TR
Tatsuro-san: Renault RS01

In addition to his Testa Rossa, he also brought the chassis of Bosica's Speedster and Ferrari 250 GTO body by Mr. Isao Nomura, who had been mentoring Kamimura-san on 1/43 model building.

There was also Mr. Y about whom I wrote a post a while ago. We haven't seen each other since we first met in Seattle in 2007. Unfortunately his Porsche 356 Speedster had some trouble and he couldn't drive it to the shop. Instead he asked his colleague to bring Toyota 2000 GT.

The unique feature of Auto Modeler's Cafe is that the half of the shop is cafe and the other half is hobby shop. The shop owner Mr. Mishima started the shop five years ago. From the shop's web site and his blog, I can tell he's very passionate about F1 models. Besides running the shop, he also produces several F1 kits. When I was looking at F1M forums I found a post about AMC and Model Factory Hiro.

I had a great time though I wish I had more time to spend. Hopefully I can see them again when I visit Japan next time.

Tamiya Plamodel Factory in Yokohama

日本について一週間ちょっと、ようやくブログ書きの時間が取れました。

去る4月6日に家から徒歩で15分位のところにあるショッピングモール、トレッサ横浜内にあるタミヤプラモデルファクトリーにいってきました。写真はこちらです。ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、このお店の特徴は模型店にアトリエ（作業室）がついていて、工具やエアブラシを借りてそこで模型が作れるという点です。さらに重要なのは「マスター」長谷川伸二さんが常駐していて、模型作りでわからない点などが聞けるというところです。そのほか初心者向けのクラスや、個人レッスンなどもされてます。

幸い長谷川さんがいらっしゃったので、いろいろお話を伺いました。お客さんは主に年配の方が多く、昔自分でうまくできなかった模型をまた作ってみたい、という人が多いそうです。若い世代はゼロ戦などの話を聞いてもピンとこず、彼らにとってのリアルな戦争はむしろガンダムであること、しかしリアルなガンダムを作るために、ミリタリーモデルの技術が必要になり、そこからミリタリーへ転向する人たちもいるということ。ご自身は「困ったときに相談できる昔の模型屋のおじさん」という姿勢でいらっしゃるとのこと。量販店に押されて町の模型屋が消えつつある中、こういった試みはとても貴重です。長く続いて次世代のホビイストがたくさん育ってくれることを切に希望します。

ひとつ残念なのは、トレッサ横浜が駅から遠いので車がないとちょっと不便な点ですね。駅から近い新橋店は便利そうですが、こちらは常設のアトリエなどはないようです。

More than one week has passed since I arrived in Japan and finally I've got time to update this blog.

I visited Tamiya Plamodel Factory in a large shopping mall Tressa Yokohama. The pictures are here. A distictive feature of this shop is the atelier where customers can rent workbench, tools and airbrush and build models. Another important feature is that "Master" Mr. Shinji Hasegawa who is professional model builder / writer is there to answer questions and/or help customers to build models. He also runs classes for beginners and private lessons.

I talked with Mr. Hasegawa for about half an hour. Many of the customers are senior who couldn't build models properly when they were young and want to try again. Gundam (Japanese anime TV program) models are very popular among younger generation while they have little interest in military models. But some of them get interested in military models as they learn technics (such as weathering) that make Gundam models look more "real". Mr. Hasegawa is aiming to be a friendly mentor, just like an old owner of a little hobby shop in town. I sincerely hope this project succeeds and fosters young model builders.

One drawback of this shop is the location. The shop is rather less accessible if you don't drive. (Luckily the shop is in walking distance from my parents house.) There's another shop near Shinbashi station, but this shop doesn't seem to have atelier.

Wilkinson's Automobilia

インターメカニカでのバーベキューパーティの後、同じくバンクーバーにある Wilkinson's Automobilia というお店に行ってきました。写真はこちらです。

お店の中は大きく３つの部屋に分かれてますが、どの部屋の壁も車やバイク関連の本で埋め尽くされています。入ってすぐの部屋には、CMC 1/18 や、各社 1/43 のダイキャストミニカーが展示されているショーケースが目に入ります。右奥の部屋は主にポスター、シャツ、帽子など、左奥の部屋は Autoart の 1/12 や 1/18 のダイキャストミニカーが棚を埋めています。そのほか色々なものがところ狭しとおいてあります。キットや工具など、模型製作に関係するものはほとんどなかったと思います。

記念にエブロのトヨタ800のミニカーと、ドライエの本を買って帰りました。お店はバンクーバーのダウンタウンから車で10分くらいのところです。皆さんもバンクーバーを訪れる機会がありましたら、足を伸ばされてみてはいかがでしょうか。

I visited Wilkinson's Automobilia in Vancouver after the BBQ party at Intermeccanica. The pictures are here.

The shop has three rooms and the walls of each room is filled with books, magazines and shop manuals of cars and motorcycles. In the entrance room there are showcases that display CMC 1/18 models and various 1/43 diecasts. The right room back in the shop has posters, clothes, caps etc. In the left room several 1/12 and tons of 1/18 diecasts fills the shelves. I didn't see many tools / kits that are related to model building.

I bought Ebbro's 1/43 Toyota 800 and 、a book about Delahaye cars. The shop is about 10 minutes away by car from the downtown of Vancouver. You may want to check the shop when you have chance to visit Vancouver.

Fujiya

模型屋めぐりから一ヶ月以上たってしまいましたが、山手線一周最後のお店は板橋区のフジヤです。写真はこちら。

２階建てのお店の一階は、普通の町のおもちゃ屋さんといった雰囲気で、ここだけみたら 1/43 を扱っているお店のようには見えません。

二階に上がると、突き当たりのショーウィンドウにルマンのジオラマが２つ飾られてます。下が 1995 年、上が 1998 年です。1998 年のほうにはモデルの横に名前があるので、「ルマンの会」の皆さんの共同制作なんでしょうかね。

入って右手にはダイキャストのショーケース、左手にはアクセサリ類が大量においてあります。キットはプロバンス、タメオを中心にBBR、PMA、ルネッサンス、SRC などいろいろあります。フジヤによる完成品もたくさん展示されています。創立40周年記念で PMA と作った１９８９年ポルシェ 962C もありました。

店員さんとお話しましたが、私が行った前日にお店の模様替えをしたらしく、前日はお店を閉めてたそうです。あぶねー。二階の半分強が車模型のスペースで、残りは普通のプラモデルの売り場になってました。北澤さんお勧めのスーパーファインシルバーなどを買って帰りました。

The last shop I visited in Japan was Fujiya in Itabashi-ku, Tokyo. Here are the pictures.

The first floor is for regular toys and you woudln't guess they are selling 1/43 models if you just look here.

At the end of the staircase to the second floor, there are two dioramas of Le Mans in a showcase. The lower one is of 1995 and the upper one is for 1998. There's a sheet for the upper one listing the name and model, so I guess this one is by members of "Le Man no kai" (Le Man club). More than half of the second floor is for car models, and the rest is for regular scale model kits.

On the right, there's a showcase for diecasts, and lots of accessories on the left. There are also lots of kits from various makers such as Provence Moulage, Tameo, BBR, PMA, Renaissance, SRC etc. The shop also has model building service and several finished models are on display. There are also models of 1998 Porsche 962C which are co-produced with PMA to commemorate the shop's 40 years anniversary.

Automodeli G.T

山手線一周２軒目は上野にある Automodeli G.T です。ＪＲ上野駅から歩いて１０分－１５分くらいでついたと思います。写真はこちら。

お店の中は明るい雰囲気で、左手にキット、右手は完成品のショーケース、お店の奥レジ近くに Ｆｉｎｉｓｈｅｒ’ｓ の塗料やアクセサリー、工具類となっています。キットも完成品もかなりの量がそろっています。残念ながらじっくり見ている時間がありませんでしたが、隅から隅まで見てたら３-４時間くらいあっという間にたってしまいそうです（お店に迷惑ですな）。

ご店主の川口さんとお話しました。以前に比べてなかなか自分で模型を作ることは少なくなったといわれてましたが、お店のショーウィンドウに飾られていたご店主のマクラーレン、素晴らしい作品でした。ショーウィンドの中だったのであまりよく見れませんでしたが、上村アキヒロさんの作品 Tyrrell 018 も飾られてました。せっかくだから、ずうずうしくもお願いしてもっと近くで見せてもらえばよかったなあ。

各種アクセサリ類とともに、隠ぺい力が強いと評判の Finisher's のファンデーションホワイトとウレタンクリアーGP1 のセットを買って帰りました。ウレタンクリアー試してみるのが楽しみです。

The second shop I visited was Automodeli G.T in Ueno. It's about 10 to 15 minutes walk from JR Ueno station. Here are the pictures.

The shop interior is tidy and bright. The left aisle is for kits and the other is for built models. Near the casher at the far end of the shop, Finisher's paints, tools and accessories are sold. There are fair amount of kits and built models. Unfortunately I didn't have much time, but I could spend 4 hours easily on browsing in the shop.

I talked with Kawaguchi-san, the owner of the shop. He said recently he has less time for building models, but the built model of McLaren looked very nice. There was also a model of Tyrrell 018 by Mr. Akihiro Kamimura, though it was in display case and I didn't have a good view of it.

Considering the easy access and lots of stocks, I'd recommend to check out this shop if you have chance to visit Tokyo. I bought Finisher's Foundation White which is known as very opaque paint, Urethane Clear GP1 (urethane clear coat kit) and other accessories. I hope I have chance to try the urethane clear stuff soon.

Minicar Shop Kojima

日本にいる間に一日自由な時間が取れたので、山手線一周、車模型店の旅に行ってきました。２年前に帰国したときには、イケダ渋谷店、メイクアップ、ミスタークラフトに行ったので、今回はそれ以外のところに行きました。

３軒回ったうちの最初がミニカーショップコジマです。お店の写真はこちら。ミニカー専門店ということで、ダイキャストの販売が主ですね。車以外にもミニチャンプスの戦車なども売られてます。

入った突き当たりにはスペシャルモデルの完成品が大きいショーウィンドーの中に飾られてます。どでかいポケールのフェラーリが２台鎮座する周りには、以前コジマから販売されていた Newcon や Rotarex の完成品がたくさん飾られてます。店の奥に行くと、1/24 や 1/43 のキットやアクセサリ、デカールなどが置いてあります。プロバンスムラージュのキットが多かったのが印象に残ってます。アクセサリ類は自社ブランドである Newcon のディテールパーツやタイヤのほか、Tameo、Tron、Meri, Z Models などいろいろ売られてました。（このエリアの写真撮ってくるの忘れてました。）お店の一番奥には CMC のダイキャストやAMRの完成品などとともに、コジマの完成品が飾られていました。

店長さんともちょっとお話したんですが、何話したか忘れてしまいました。ブログなんてもっと早く書かないといけないですね。ちょうど Ebay のフォーラムでも Newcon ってどこのメーカー？みたいな話が出てるんですが、もう少しキットを販売していたころのお話など聞いてくればよかったと後悔。ライトなどのアクセサリー類を買って次のお店に向かいました。

ところで、コジマのサービス券を５５０円分もらいました。来年４月３０日まで有効ですが、それまでに私は日本に帰ることは多分ないので、先着一名様に差し上げたいと思います。ほしい方は 43@shibuyas.com にご連絡ください。

I spent a whole day to visit a few model shops in Japan. The first one was Minicar Shop Kojima. I took some pictures of the shop. More than half of the shop is occupied by diecasts, including military vehicles by Minichamps.

Straight ahead from the entrance, lots of special models are displayed. Around two huge Ferraris by Pocher, dozens of Newcon and Rotarex models, which were produced by the shop mode than 10 years ago, are displayed. Near the end of the room, some 1/24 and 1/43 kits are sold along with decals and accessories. There are couple dozens of Provence Moulage kits. The accessories are from Tameo, Tron, Meri, Z models etc, along with Newcon (they still make few accessories and tires). In the showcase at the end of the shop, some built models by Kojima, couple of AMR built models (expensive), CMC die-casts are for sale.

I've talked with the shop owner a bit. I should've learned more from him about old days of the shop or information about their kits / products. I bought some 1/43 accessories and headed to the next shop.

Model Car Shop "React"

東京は田園調布にある車模型専門店リアクト(www.react-co.jp)に行ってきました。私の実家から数駅と非常に近いところにこんな専門店があるなんて知りませんでした。

ご主人の落合信夫さんはこの道３０年近くの超ベテランフィニッシャーで、普段はお父さんがお店に立っていらっしゃいます。リアクトのメインの業務は落合さんのほか二人の職人さんによる模型の受注制作で、お店は副業のような様子です。

お父さんから色々なお話を伺いました。近所に数件あった模型店もみんな廃業してしまって、今ではここ一軒のみになってしまったこと。世界初のエッチングパーツつきのキットの発売をしたりしたこと。お得意さんがついていながらも、なかなか経営の難しいこと。最近は各メーカーからのキットのリリースが少なくなってきたことなどなど。２時間近くお邪魔してしまいました。

プロバンスムラージュの Alfa Romeo 33/3 のキットや Z モデルの Ferrari 330 P3 のディテールアップキットなどを購入しました。お願いして店内の写真を撮らせてもらいましたが、リアクトの完成品の写真もケースから出して撮らせてもらうことができました。写真はこちらです。つたない撮影技術で各作品の素晴らしさを十分に伝えることができませんが、皆さんにも楽しんでいただけたら幸いです。プロの作品を間近に見ることができて、とても幸せでした。

I visited a model car shop "React" (www.react-co.jp) in Ota-ku, Tokyo. It was a surprise that there's such a specialized hobby shop just few stations away from my parents house.

The owner of the shop Mr. Nobuo Ochiai is a very seasoned builder and has been building these special models for nearly 30 years. His father takes care of customers at the shop. The main business of React is to build models on order and Mr. Ochiai and two other artisans are working. Selling kits and factory built models at the shop is the secondary business.

Senior Ochiai told me lots of stories. There used to be several model shops but only this shop survives to date. React released a kit with photo etched parts for the first time in the world. There are lots of patrons yet the business is not easy. Recently the number of newly released kits is declining and so on. I hanged around nearly 2 hours.

I bought a kit of Alfa Romeo 33/3 by Provence Moulage, the detail up parts for Ferrari 330 P3 by Z model etc. I took the pictures of the shop and senior Ochiai was kind enough to let me take the pictures of the built models by React. The pictures are here. I was glad to appreciate the works of the experts closely. I hope you to enjoy these pictures too.

Surf City Model Car Company

ディズニーランドからの帰りに模型屋さんによってきました。Surf City Model Car Company (http://www.surfcitymodelcars.com/) はディズニーランドから車で約３０分ほどのところにあります。西海岸ではかず少ない 1/43 のキットや完成品を扱っているお店です。わたしは eBay で店の主人の Jake さん（eBay ID: modelcarguy）からいくつかキットを買っていて、お店があることは知っていましたが、ディズニーランドの近くにあることは今回の旅行まで気がつきませんでした。
Jake さんは快く私を迎えてくれて、展示してあるモデルやお店の案内をしてくれました。あまり時間が取れなかったのが残念ですが、実際にお店をたずねて Jake さんに会うことができてよかったです。記念に Top Queen の Auto Union Type C のキットを買って帰りました（また在庫が増えた）。

I dropped by a model car shop on my way back to home from Disneyland. The shop Surf City Model Car Company (http://www.surfcitymodelcars.com/) is about 30 minutes drive from Disneyland. This shop carries 1/43 kits and factory built models, which I believe is very rare in the west coast. I know that Jake, the owner of the shop, has a shop since I bought some kits from him through eBay (his eBay ID is modelcarguy). But I didn't realize it was close to Disneyland till this trip.
Jake gave me a warm welcome and showed me the models and his shop. It's too bad I couldn't spend much time there, but it was nice to see and talk with Jake in person. I bought a kit of Auto Union Type C by Top Queen as a souvenir (another addition to the stock).
