The principal innovation was a roving U-boat killer outfit―a group composed of an escort carrier (CVE) equipped with Wildcat fighters and Avengers which could use bombs, depth charges or torpedoes, screened by old destroyers or destroyer escorts. In May 1943, Admiral Ingersoll, C. in Atlantic Fleet, gave the commanders of CVE groups discretion to hunt down submarines wherever HF/DF fixes indicated their presence. These orders were a joy to the young escort carrier commanders, making them feel as free off soundings as John Paul Jones or Lord Nelson.
First to profit was Captain Giles E.Short of Bogue, which, with four destroyers, departed Argentia 30 May under orders to conduct offensive operations in wide support of North African convoys. On 5 June a Wildcat and an Avenger executed a well-coordinated attack on U-217 of Group “Trutz”, then some 63 miles from Bogue. At 1507 June 8, a clear, calm day with glassy sea, a Bogue Avenger sighted U-758 moving “at extremely high speed.” She happened to be the first of the German submarine fleet to be equipped with a quadruple mount of 20-mm antiaircraft guns, and to have orders from Doenitz to fight planes on the surface instead of diving.
