Chapter Ⅴ Destruction in the Atlantic
6.If one or two torpedoes did not fatally hole the attacked ship, the submarine finished her off by shellfire. In the spring, when the nights became shorter and the ineffectiveness of our antisubmarine warfare had been demonstrated, the U-boats became bolder and attacked in broad daylight, even surfaced. Although they invariably attacked without warning, they commonly gave the crew a chance to get away before opening gunfire, and refrained from machine-gunning survivors in lifeboats, as had been freely in the early part of the war.
Survivors were often questioned as to the identity of the ship and the nature of her cargo, were sometimes offered water, provisions or cigarettes and dismissed with a standardized joke about sending the bill to Roosevelt and Churchill. The healthy and sunburned German submariners appeared to be having a glorious field day. They later referred to this period as “the happy time”.
