Introduction
This report will utilize the statistical knowledge learned in class to analyse the data on two different websites. The first section contains data from the UK Land Registry Website about house prices in Lincolnshire. A histogram will be used to show the distribution and dispersion of the data. Then the average, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values will also be presented. The second section analyses the box-office data from the Film Distributor Associations website. A regression is run to explore the relationship between variables “Weekend total” and “Weeks on release”.
Section A: Land Registry
A1 Cost benefit analysis of open data
Open data can bring more transparency for how the government is performing. If anyone has any doubts on what the government did, they can simply go online to find open data. Second, it is easier for students and professors to find data for academic research. Third, open data can help firms such as McKinsey consulting to utilize and analyse these data. However, there are also costs associated with free data because those people who worked hard to gather these data may not be paid as much as when the data is accessed with a fee.
A2 Price paid data analysis
Figure 1
As shown in Figure 1, the mean is found using the “average” function in Excel. The median is found using the “Median” function in Excel. The variance is found using “VAR.S.” in Excel because not all of the data is used and only the sample from Lincolnshire is included. The standard deviation is the square root of variance. The kurtosis is found using the “Kurtosis” function in Excel.
Figure 2
Figure 3
From Figure 2, we can conclude that the data is mostly centred on the 22,000 to 648,000 range. The data is skewed to the right. The mean is 182,354 while the median is 154,000. When the mean is greater than the median, it means that the data is skewed to the right. Figure 3 is a partial one and only included data from 22,000 to 648,000 since that is the area where the data is most concentrated and I broke it down to further analyse the data and see the distribution. From the second histogram, we can see that the data is also skewed to the right. The excess kurtosis is positive and the data is leptokurtic.
A3 Highest and lowest prices
The table with the five lowest prices in Lincolnshire is shown in Figure 4:
Figure 4
The table with the five highest prices in Lincolnshire is shown in Figure 5:
Figure 5
Section B: Film Box-office data analysis
B1 Description of the data
The time series chart for the four years is shown in the line graph in Figure 6.
Figure 6

The percentage changes from year to year is shown in the table below. The data is calculated using this year’s data dividing by last year’s data with the corresponding month. A number greater than 100% indicates that the data increased from last year and a number lower than 100% suggests that the data decreased from last year.
Figure 7
From Figure 6 and 7, we can see that the admissions data for 2015 was generally higher than the 2014 data for the same month. The 2014 data was generally lower than that of 2013’s. There is no apparent increasing or decreasing trend for the data from 2012 to 2013 if one looks the data by month. However, the total showed that the admissions decreased from 2013 to 2012, and from 2014 to 2013. Only in 2015 to 2014 did the admissions data increase. There is seasonality because the data is lowest for September in all four years. August, December, and January are months with the higher admissions. This pattern is fairly consistent over the past four years.
B2 Regression analysis
The scatter plot, Figure 9, shows that the two variables have a negative relationship, though not very linear.
Regression analysis
1.Linear
The first regression has “weekends on release” on the y axis and “Weekend total” on the x axis. The result of the linear model is presented in Figure 10.
Weekends on release=b + weekend total
Figure 10
The fact that the R squared is only 0.015 and that the p values are not significant means that the linear model is not a good fit for this data.
2.X variable Log model
The second model is the log transformation of “weekend total”, shown in Figure 11:
Weekends on release= b + ln (weekend total)
Figure 11
The result is better than the linear model because R square included to 0.09 and the p value lowered. However, since the p value is still not significant, this is still not the appropriate model.
3.Y variable log model
The best fitting model found is by transforming the dependent variables into log forms and since one of them is negative and only a positive number has a corresponding log form, that negative number was deleted. The result is presented in Figure 12.
Ln (Weekends on release) = b + weekend total
The R squared is 0.908, a very high one, and the p value for both the intercept and the x variable are significant at the 1% level. The scatter plot for this regression is shown in Figure 13:

Upon the first week of my internship, I received warm welcome and support from my supervisor and visited all production lines and assembly lines of the factory of the company. The supervisor guided me to distinguish the characteristics and functions of all of the hundreds of products as well as the price of the different kinds of products. I had been positive in learning the product information and other stuffs of the factory and had met the expectation of my supervisor, which is to distinguish all product type and to have a basic understanding of the production and assembly line of the factory by the end of the first week. This is the first time I had ever been in a factory to see all the production and assembly lines working and I think this is a great opportunity to connect what I learned at college to the real world.
During the second week, I spent most of the time assisting workers while studying barcode technology, store management and permutation at the same time. I was trained in using the barcode system. During assisting in printing and organizing barcode I learned the important of matching the products with commodity code since this provide great convenience to manage stores and all the different kinds of products. The barcode technology can also help check the stock and net unit billing. To be more specific, the production capacity as well as the delivery plans should also be determined according to the barcode system and match to orders. During this week I learned how to operate barcode system and the importance of knowing the barcode technology and operate barcode system. Since we have to create barcode by ourselves, it is important not to mess things up since it will link to a series of production and delivery plans in the future.
After the first two weeks, my jobs started to be more intense and I started to work more closely with other team members. I had been doing order receiving and collecting orders to make shipping plans with the guidance of other team members. With the guidance, I was able to individually do order receiving and determine the exact time to ship commodity according to the requirements of different orders. I also joined the department meetings where I sum up and review my work in the recent weeks. Apart from receiving orders and planning shipments, I learned how to send production order. In general the production plan all falls within the schedule timeline and the each stage of production can be tracked. However, if anything changed, the top priority is our customer and we should reorganize the production plan and match up the customer’s requirement with the factory schedule. Another major work I did was to research on some agents about their service conditions. From this week, I started to do weekly report to my supervisor on my work.
From then I got training and support from my supervisor to study booking cargo spaces to the eastern US. To be specific, the booking time should be based upon the time of which the good was produced and we would change the delivery time any time if quality problems or troubles happen. An important thing I learned was that our top priority was our customers and we should negotiate with the customers. During the division meeting, the presenter talked about that every agent had encountered problems regarding cargo transportation and ordering and most of them had changed delivery plans. The goal for our company is to improve, to test and to rework on our products if not satisfied and improve the supply chain system through learning from past experience.
From the six week, new interns were recruited and I spent the majority of time that week taking them to our manufactory for tour and introducing our main scope of business as well as our main production line. After leading them for tour of the factory I held workshop teaching them how to use our K3 system. Sometimes they have questions and I tried to answer all of them. In our department meeting, I talked about the new interns’ training done and I encouraged them and delegated the work according to what my supervisor gave me.
Working together with the new interns, I learned to calculate dry container, which is based on the packaging of our company products. We base the size of the dry container and make little changes to our package of the boxes to improve the capacity of the boxes. This also helps bringing down the total costs of transportation at the same time.
I moved to the“Briggs and Stratton” division as arranged by the company executive. The “Briggs and Stratton” is classified into an individual division since it is our top priority customer, from which we get about 30% of our total revenue. During my internship at this division, I got to know some information about BS Company and more importantly, their specific requirements and standard. Different from other companies, BS Company has their own warehouse and product line. This will require the supplier company that cooperates with them to know every detail including their operation manual and label. During the time I stayed at BS Division, we were going through production planning stage where we examine problems and adjust production plan, and then plan to produce.
At the end of my internship, I listed all the work I had done and their progress and handed over to my partner. During this internship, I learned a lot about Supply Chain related work which I could not learn at school. I was also given opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the company. First, I had opportunity to speak out in the weekly meeting to express my own thoughts and suggestions about our project. I had chance to speak up about some of my thoughts regarding the improvement of the barcode system and they listened. Second, when the new interns came, I took the responsibility to lead them, saving my supervisor a lot of work and time. Leading them to the factory and introducing our work reinforce my understanding about the things I learned at the company and delegating the work also improved my leadership skills.
I will recommend this internship to future AU SCMN students who stay in China during summer. The three months intensive internship program really helps students who have not worked before and who are confused about their future careers related to supply chain management. This internship will give students an overall picture of what a big standard manufacturing company is like and the structure and main tasks of the company. This helps you to be more certain about which specific job area you would want to enter after graduation.
If possible, in order to improve the internship experience for future students, I recommend the company carrying out internship program that is more concentrated in one department so that those students who are interested in one specific area could learn specific things more thoroughly instead just trying everything on the surface. However, I will keep paying attention to the development of this company, and I will consider an employment offer with this company because I think this company has systematic management system and structure which is good for me to start off my career.
Regarding the impact of the internship on my future, I think I am more certain about what I am learning and what I can expect for my future career. As mentioned, one important skill I improved through this internship experience is my leadership skill. In order to lead a good team, I learnt that I have to not only know my team members well and but also the work well so that I know how to distribute it well. I also improved my team work and communication skills through this internship cause I had a lot of opportunities working with partners and discussing on meetings. Although I barely have time to work on my own, I think I can improve my individual working skill in the future. For future SCMN classes, I think I will do better understanding about the supply chain system since I had gained this real world experience working in a manufacturing company and in a factory. Those production planning and supply chain system improvement works brought me inspirations on the knowledge I learnt and will probably learn in class. This internship will absolutely improve my full-time employment search and marketability since now I know more about the potential divisions and structures in a big company and I am more certain about my advantages.

1 VALUE CREATION OPPORTUNITY
3D printing is a kind of additive manufacturing technology, which produces objects layer-by-layer and totally applies to all various materials, including plastic, metal, ceramics, glass, paper, and even living cells. When combined with other kinds of high technology, a single object can be printed in multiple materials and colors, and a single print job can even produce interconnected moving parts (such as hinges, chain links, or mesh). It certainly will provide consistent quality, innovation, high performance and timely delivery for consumers of different industry fields, with superior functionality taken on high value (Robert & Scott, 2009).
1.1 DRIVERS AND TRENDS
The influencing drivers of 3D printing’s potential development include the mature environment and market acceptance, 3D printing machine software applications and useful equipment such as 3D printers. According to the McKinsey Global Institute (2013), 3D printing could generate economic impact of $230 billion to $550 billion per year by 2025 in the applications we have sized. And the largest source of potential impact among sized applications would be from consumer uses, followed by direct manufacturing and the use of 3D printing to create tools and molds.
1.2 PASSION FOR THE TECHNOLOGY
I’ve held much interest for fashion and jewelry all the way and thus care extraordinarily about the newly entered capable technology. And 3D printing Technology definitely has brought a series of breakthrough to the jewelry industry with its convenient manufacture process from designing to building to assembling.
1.3 STRATEGIC ARENA
The techniques jewelry industry generally adopt include manual processing craft such as filaments craft and machine processing craft such as dewax casting technique, stamping technique and machine chain processing technique, The techniques have some inherent inconvenience while 3D printing is able to make jewelry that are difficult or impossible to produce with traditional techniques, including jewelry with complex internal structures that add strength, reduce weight, or increase functionality and shorten the traditional production process. So 3D printing has extraordinarily powerful reason to ride on the crest of success within the jewelry industry.
1.3.1 Product
The elements for 3D Printing’s application in jewelry products are shown by the table below:
elementcharacterization
designFill the gap of complex lines and hollow designs that cannot be accomplished by normal artisans
modelCreate a three-dimensional virtual model with accurate dimension, structure and layout, designers can accurately set the ratio of jewelry and metal brackets and design every aspect of the jewelry
procedureSet up the computer process in all the cast and wax models and whatever complicated shape can be printed out by the computer settings
serviceFairly customized service that ordinary people have an opportunity to design and create their own personal jewelry format
priceCompared to those expensive jewelry customization, 3D printing jewelry is undoubtedly that everyone can afford
precisionBy a mechanical operation with definitely high precision
Table 1: characteristics of an ideal 3D printed jewelry product
1.3.2 Target Market and Application
The conditions of 3D Printing’s application in jewelry segment markets are shown by the table:
segmentationcharacterization
Gold and other precious metals3D printing for metals is categorized as direct printing and indirect printing, and SLM(selective laser melting) technology of direct printing is used widely in gold metal
GemstonesThe colored gemstones or organic stones made out of 3D print will still be identified as artificial gems which fails to compete with scarce natural gems in the value or price
Silver or imitation jewelry3D printing is widely used in silverware which replaces the two links of carved wax and guided mold in the production chain, without considering the integrally formed or sub-items formed guided models well as a variety of tension, stress problems.
Plastic materialIn terms of printing plastic jewelry, the surface finish, product quality, unity of color and other issues of 3D printing have been controversial, some people believe that 3D printing will not compete with the finished product through traditional manufacturing methods and materials.
diamondA kind of precious materials used widely for marriage time, so attention shall be paid to saving material supplies and 3D printing technology is good at this point
Table 2: 3D printing technology’s application for jewelry business market
2 CORE COMPETENCIES
2.1 CORE TECHNOLOGY COMPETENCE
There are two categories of 3D printing technology for the jewelry industry. The first is indirect printing which generally uses 3D printed wax or resin material for casting. High-precision 3D printer prints the plaster mold and the molten metal is poured into the mold to be solidified, and finally the plaster is cracked and removed, which greatly enriches jewelry design and improves the efficiency of jewelry manufacturing. Another is direct printing, comprises of SLM selective laser melting technology and SLS selective laser sintering technology (Laplume, 2016).
2.2MARKETING CHANNEL DEVELOPING COMPETENCE
Due to the high price of jewelry industry, 3D printed jewelry manufacturer shall have an access to market distribution channel, both online and offline. Now many 3D printed jewelry manufacturer such as Orori closed the stores and transferred to the e-commerce business model, focusing offering their customers customized 3D printing jewelry service on online. 3D printing technology in the jewelry industry will give rise to digital manufacturing business platform and business model. Customization and standardization of mass production will become the norm of our lives rather than conflict with each other.
2.3 BRAND COMMUNICATION COMPETENCIE
The brand awareness of jewelry industry is fairly low, but jewelry industry is an industry with high arts and culture characteristics (Dauriz, Remy, & Tochtermann, 2014). With the jewelry consumers today increasingly becoming mature, the jewelry corporate must have a scientific concept of brand management, use all variety of brand communication tools to achieve brand maintenance, and make as great as possible impact on consumers' purchasing decisions.
2.4 FUTURE BUSINESS
100% micron level precision dewax model 3D printing mass production
With CDLM(Continuous Digital Light Manufacturing)patented technology, 3D printers manage to print the master mold for casting fast within several minutes, rather than several hours generally
Professional rapid prototyping equipment and new castable resin formulations with DWS self-developed resin supplies can create good flexibility and maintain the shape of the molding, which will make the consumers easily check the details of 3D printed parts and detect any defects
Online jewelry design custom system combining CAD software with 3D printers, which allows consumers to customize their designs, and dispatches the products within several days
Laser sintering technology sufficiently melting metal powder
In the aspect of software technology, rendering software tools specifically for 3D printing jewelry design will be developed
In the aspect of plastic jewelry 3D printing, new surface treatment services will be introduced, which will be able to bring extraordinary look and feel for 3D printed wearable items, solving surface finish, product quality, single color and other controversial problems of 3D printed jewelry
In the aspect of customization technologies, “human body” will be input as an environmental constraint condition when 3D printing generates jewelry so that each piece of jewelry in the "growing" process will remember the shape of fingers, arms, or neck to achieve the perfect match. The net effect is that jewelry will “grow out ” around the human body naturally
With more and more mature generative designs, more aesthetically pleasing 3D printed jewelry design may not come from artificial jewelry design, but may be automatically generated from a computer algorithm design
3 STRATEGIC TECHNOLOGY PLAN
3.1 PRODUCT INNOVATION OBJECTIVE
In future 3D printing jewelry business, to research and innovate the more efficient 3D Printing technologies and generate products more applicable for mature future 3D Printed jewelry market.

英国report代写范文-The Interpretation and Construction of Chineseness

Before, when western society has dominated the movie industry, Said considers the Orient as the invention of the west and the Silent Other (1). Since Asian economies thrived in the past decades, Asian movies began to play an important part in this industry. Before, the image of the Orient has long been depicted according to the imagination of the Occident. Currently the Silent Other began to voice their opinions, but whether the Orient has been properly reconstructed remains controversy. China, as one of the great powers in the east, acts as an active role in the exploration and transformation of its own representation, Chineseness, on the big screens. China’s Fifth Generation films drew the attention of the west, among which, Zhang Yimou’s movies about the oppressively feudal China, such as Raise the Red Lantern, won awards abroad1. Many Chinese and foreign audience gained impression of the representation of China from this movie. Thus, exploring how Zhang interpret and construct Chineseness in Raise the Red Lantern can help understand how the image of China is displayed on the screen to the audience. Though it has been accused of selling commodified Chineseness to the west and being a kind of self-Orientalism, this movie still can be proved to contribute to the continuous process of self-constitution of Chineseness.
Raise the Red Lantern depicts a story about the miserable life of a 19-year-old girl, Songlian, after she was married to a wealthy landlord as his fourth concubine. Along her sad story, the tragic of other female characters in this movie, including three other wives of the landlord and a young maidservant, is also portrayed vividly to show the helpless and painful life of women in the male dominated society in feudal China. In this movie, Zhang and his team design many special, sometimes even unique rituals, customs, decoration and setting to present the surrounding and background, and more importantly, to provoke the climax of this story. Raise the Red Lantern, like Zhang’s other famous movies, i.e. Judou, chooses the background of oppressive feudal China. In Zhang’s film about China, he seemingly prefers to present “a timeless China of the past” (Chow 145). In this retrospective mode of environment, Zhang provides the audience with his imagination of China – a “China” with exaggerated oriental aesthetics and excessive rituals and rules (Chow 145). From the combination of ritual and rule, decoration and setting, we can detect Zhang’s way of interpretation and construction of Chineseness.
In this movie, ritual and rule is the core to lead the plot. Those rituals are mainly designed for the organization of the sex life of the master; or to a deeper extent, the system to define the status and position of his wives. Every night, the wife who is nominated to accompany the master can gain the honor of lightening the red lanterns in her courtyard, and enjoy the special foot massage. In the next day, she has the special right to order a dish according to her wish. Such privilege ignites the wives’ will to earn the master’s favor, and hence triggers the hidden or even deadly competition among the ladies in this house. Besides, there are rules like the wife who commits adultery will be hung in a dark room, or a woman other than wives of the master is not allowed lightening a red lantern for herself. Such custom and ritual builds up a system that restricts the lives of the women in the house. The use of the palpable symbol red lanterns helps externalize and reify the oppression of the women. The reinforcement of the rituals and rules, especially the emphasis on its origin from the old ancestors, reflects the director’s intention to present a picture of China where women are suppressed in the conservative patriarchal feudal society.
Apart from ritual and rule, the deliberate setting and decoration in this movie manifests Zhang’s aesthetics of China, or more specifically, the imagined feudal China. Most perceivable setting is possibly the design of each concubine’s room, especially the third wife Meishan’s. Meishan is presumed to be a Peking opera performer before. In her room, oversized Peking opera masks, costumes and musical instruments are hung over the walls. Such decoration screams Meishan’s identity in the past, and brings the elements of Chinese traditional art into tangible form. Generally speaking, very few Peking opera performers would like to decorate their room in such an explicit way. It can be deduced that it is the director’s idea to portray the traditional Chinese culture in this manner. Moreover, red lantern, apart from being a crucial tool of the ritual, plays a significant role in creating the image of traditional Chinese culture in this movie. Red lantern has always been an important symbol of Chinese culture since it was hung on the Tiananmen Square. Outside this movie, hanging the red lantern as a ritual of picking the wife for overnight company seldom takes place in the Chinese people’s life. Linking this symbol to the key ritual of the story conveys the aesthetic way of Zhang’s attempt to present Chineseness on the screen.
Based on the ritual and setting discussed above, Zhang manages to construct Chineseness by visually exoticizing China rather than presenting the genuine complexity of Chinese society which may not be so aesthetically pleasant as that in Raise the Red Lantern. Unarguably, the representation of Chineseness in this movie is more an imagination of Zhang’s than a practical picture of feudal Chinese society. In Dai’s eyes, it is a film for the “casual pleasures of foreigners” (336). She has pointed out several false notes of the setting in this movie, including the accent of opera performer Meishan, the improper location of the haunted room on the rooftop, and the indiscriminate use of the image of dragon on the costume (Dai 335). Zhang seems to construct a picture of Chineseness according to the preference and imagination of the taste of the West, as many of the rituals and setting in this movie are inappropriately designed in many critics’ opinions. Therefore, this movie receives denouncement of selling the exotic picture of ancient China and pandering the west (Chow 151). Also, in this movie female is the center of the oppression and presented as a sexual body under social restriction and male gaze. In this circumstance, it can be easily implied that this movie, as a portrait of the observed oriental female, is watched by the occidental male observer, which falls in to the dual system of the Orient vs. the Occident, and seemingly reinforces the patriarchal interest in women as merely sexual objects. Zhang, in this case, is accused of producing a kind of self-Orientalism.
However, interpreting Chineseness is not to give it correct definition; just as Orientalism is not about the authenticity of the Orient (Chu 205). In the globalization era, there is no clear line between the East and the West. The act of explore Chineseness and transforming cultural images should be seen as an attempt of “new operational logic” rather than a “false representation of Chineseness” (Chu 205). After all, Chineseness is discursively produced and socially and historically collective entity (Berry 131). Indeed, Raise the Red Lantern contains seemingly inappropriate depiction of women and Chinese tradition. But what matters does not lie in its authenticity, but its mode of signification resulting from the ethnic customs and invention (Chow 144). The significance of characters, decoration, and the narratives totally constitute a new type of ethnography and spectacle (Chow 143). The absurd customs and rituals as well as the unique setting accumulate to a type of “exhibitionism” to the gaze of the “orientalist surveillance” (Chow170). That is to say, by deliberately producing a new kind of oriental presentation, rather than being gazed by the western audience, Zhang tries to provide a self-display to define elements of a new ethnography. Audience is not passive receiver and it does not mean that they will be convinced by Zhang’s representation entirely. Instead, it is in the discussion of this movie that Chineseness is under construction.
Raise the Red Lantern, in this case, represents Zhang’s interpretation of Chineseness and promotes its configuration. Zhang Yimou, like other Fifth Generation directors, has been described as pleasing the West by selling commodified Chineseness, and trying to earn the legitimate interpretation of Chineseness. However, critics like those are also fighting for their right of interpretation. It is exactly in this process that the Chineseness is shaped, and we cannot simply accuse movies like Raise the Red Lantern misrepresent China. Instead, such initiative acts of arguing and presenting the complexity of Chineseness is favorable for earning back the discourse power. Fifth Generation directors are just the beginning after China has growing influence on politics, economy and even culture in the recent decades. More directors, critiques and audience will come and join the discursive subject of what image of China should be presented on the sceen.

When it comes to employee development, training available to employees including both line level employees and management can be regarded as an important part for employee development. Orientation has actually played a significant role in getting new employees familiar with the hotel and assisting them in establishing contact with hotel and other colleagues. And after the probation period, both line level employees and management will be trained about knowledge related to Blue Energy and Make It Right series and such training will be limited within six months since their entry day. In addition, safety training and legal issues training will as well be an inevitable part of all employees’ training so that they can be familiar with how to guarantee safety and prevent from breaking any law while providing service to guests. But what has to be especially mentioned is that employees from different departments and of different posts are equipped with exclusive training programs. For example, employees in the engineering department have to be trained about IT technology and privacy security.
Another great contribution toward employee development is the Hilton Worldwide University which is an online training site specially set up by Hilton for all the hotel employees. On this website, it will provide different courses and training materials for employees from different departments. Usually, the human resources department will schedule the training courses for all level management employees on this site and they have to complete the training within the specified time. When they finish their training in the due time, they have to provide proof to the human resources department. It has been testified that Hilton Worldwide University is a powerful way of educating and training staff. Under the gradual training and education, all the employees in Hilton can have a clear picture about Hilton and about what their main responsibilities are.
In the meanwhile, information will be effectively communicated through the organization for each and every day. Everyday all departments will hold a short morning meeting to share the most updated information or news of the hotel. If there is any problem or issue happened the day before, the department manager or on-duty supervisor will also refer to it during the meeting, hoping that all the employees can pay close attention to it. It is believed that the morning meeting can play a vital role in the operation of the hotel and the staff performance and all the employees seem to be with high enthusiasm toward it. For the housekeeping department, the morning meeting can be regarded as a chance for the employees to get feedback about their yesterday’s work and a reminder as for how they should behave today.
What is special about Hilton is that there are three TV screen sets in different locations within the hotel, such as cafeteria, right beside service elevator and hallway. Those TVs will broadcast repeatedly rolling about the overall score of our hotel, mission statement, latest news within the hotel, such as introduction about new employees, monthly blue energy star winner, photos of recent activities, etc. As far as I am concerned, these TV screen sets have really helped a lot toward employees’ keeping in pace with the latest news about the hotel because those three TV screen sets are actually in eye-catching places so that all the employees can from time to time look through the information demonstrated. Furthermore, I hold that it can be conducive to maintain the stability of hotel’s service level and it can at the same time deepen the relationship between the hotel and the staff. Broadcasting repeatedly rolling about staff information can enable the staff to feel Hilton’s service tenet “show me you care”. I can still remember clearly that the Director of Human Resources has ever told me that for the human resources department, employees are the subjects of their services and they will spare no efforts to serve all the employees. It is ingrained in their mind that once the hotel can show concern for their employees, the employees will naturally have feelings and belongings to the hotel in turn.
The hotel will have one or two staff party every year and all the employees will be invited for it. As for Hilton, the staff party can, for one part, express their appreciation and gratitude for the excellent performance of all the staff and can, for another, help convey the latest mission statement and development plans of Marcus Hotel and Resorts. Such staff party can be a wonderful method to connect staff and hotel so that the staff can regain motivation and passion for approaching work and projects. As a result, the hotel can achieve the goal of healthy sustainable development in the long run.
It is good news within Hilton that all the front line employees can get promoted as operational supervisors if they continue to create outstanding performance for two to three years. The operational supervisors will rotate in all departments and work with different managers and supervisors and they have to work in each department for at least six months. During the rotation, they will shadow with different manager and supervisor. Front house departments, like front desk, housekeeping and food and beverage supply, have to work as front line employees if the department experiences peak time or appears the phenomenon of short-handed.
Operational Critique
The biggest strength of the hotel lies in its perfect location which is one of the key factors why Hilton Madison can always keep an upper hand when compared with other same level hotels in Madison. Hilton Madison is located in the downtown area and it is only five minutes’ walk to the State Capitol, the center of Madison and fifteen minutes’ walk from lots of dining and recreational facilities. Besides, it is also next to Lake Monona, one of the biggest lakes in Madison. However, the most worth mentioning is that there is a convention center in front of our hotel where there will be plenty of weddings and conferences from time to time. So you can have a fair knowledge that most of people that participate in the weddings and conferences will choose to check in our hotel.
The second advantage of our hotel is that there is no competitor because they are totally nine hotels in downtown area in Madison and Hilton is the very scale hotel that can offer full service to the guests. And the professional team is another significant aspect that has led to the success of Hilton. The whole team from the top to the bottom is pretty professional for work and all the team members work as a family. You can always see the smile on everyone’s face and people will greet one another all the time. Inter-department help can easily be realized and employees from different departments will give a hand to each other if possible. On weekends, sometimes you can see that the managers are cleaning rooms and they have actually performed perfectly the mission of Hilton “show me you care”.
However, this hotel is with its weaknesses. Firstly, this hotel was built fifteen years ago but it has never carried out a thorough renovation since then. As a result, air conditioning failure and leakage of bathroom sanitary equipment become the most frequently complained project from guests. Secondly, the shortage of basic posts in front line departments, like housekeeping, front desk and F & B, calls for urgent methods to deal with. Such phenomenon will deteriorate especially during the peak period from May to October, leading to summer intern and staff from outsourcing company being the main labor force. In this way, it will directly lead to service quality and sustainability being challenged. Another fatal weakness is that the hotel occupancy rate and RevPar (revenue per available room) will also be determined by season. The fact is that Madison is located in the North-central part of the United States and it is near the Michigan Lake, determining that it is with a cold climate and a long winter. Therefore the winter will be confronted with low hotel occupancy rate and RevPar (revenue per available room) due to the severe depletion of business travels, conventions, weddings, etc.
As to my own primary department, it is deemed that service quality inconsistency is a major problem and it is also out of the shortage of hands. The regular employees have to undertake great tension and huge task to both care about both their routine work and shadowing task, resulting in their being unable to ensure the service standards of both high quality and high efficiency. In the meanwhile, different treatments received by senior employees and new employees will hit staff morale because those senior associates earn three times more than other associates and they are able to get weekend day off easier. According to this, choosing the right people to do shadowing and offer a pay rise for those employees that will take the responsibility for shadowing.
