　さすがの怪盗も、これには胆きもをつぶしました。相手が人間ならばいくらピストルを向けられてもおどろくような賊ではありませんが、古い古い鎌倉時代の観音さまが、いきなり動きだしたのですから、びっくりしないではいられません。

Even for Twenty Faces, it was surprising. If it was a human pointing a gun at him he wouldn't be surprised but it was a very old Budda statue.

　びっくりしたというよりも、ゾーッと心の底からおそろしさがこみあげてきたのです。こわい夢をみているような、あるいはお化けにでも出くわしたような、なんともえたいのしれぬ恐怖です。

 It was rather terrifying from the bottom of the heart than just surprising. It was terrible like a nightmare or seeing a ghost.

　大胆不敵の二十面相が、かわいそうに、まっさおになって、たじたじとあとじさりをして、ごめんなさいというように、ろうそくを床において、両手を高くあげてしまいました。

 The very bold Twenty Faces got pale miserably, stumble back, putting the candle on the floor and raised his both hands high as if he was apologizing.

　すると、またしても、じつにおそろしいことがおこったのです。観音さまが、れんげの台座からおりて、床の上に、ヌッと立ちあがったではありませんか。そして、じっとピストルのねらいをさだめながら、一歩、二歩、三歩、賊のほうへ近づいてくるのです。

 Then something horrible happened again. The statue stepped down from the pedestal and stood up on the floor unexpectedly. As it kept pointing the gun at him it started taking one, two, three steps to him.

「き、きさま、いったい、な、何者だっ。」
　二十面相は、追いつめられたけもののような、うめき声をたてました。

"You, you, bastard, who the hell are you?"
Twenty Faces gave a groan like a beast driven into a corner.

「わしか、わしは羽柴家のダイヤモンドをとりかえしに来たのだ。たった今、あれをわたせば、一命を助けてやる。」
　おどろいたことには、仏像がものをいったのです。おもおもしい声で命令したのです。

"I have come here to take the diamonds back. Giving them to me now and you'll be alive."
To his surprise, the statue ordered him in a very heavy voice.

 「ハハア、きさま、羽柴家のまわしものだな。仏像に変装して、おれのかくれがをつきとめに来たんだな。」

"I see, you are sent by Hasibas. Coming here to check my place in disguise as the statue."

　相手が人間らしいことがわかると、賊は少し元気づいてきました。でも、えたいのしれぬ恐怖が、まったくなくなったわけではありません。というのは、人間が変装したのにしては、仏像があまり小さすぎたからです。立ちあがったところを見ると、十二―三の子どもの背たけしかありません。その一寸法師いっすんぼうしみたいなやつが、落ちつきはらって、老人のようなおもおもしい声でものをいっているのですから、じつになんとも形容のできないきみ悪さです。

 Once he found out the it was a human he got recovered his strength. Still he had some fear because it was too short for a human. It got only 12 or 13 years old boys hight. The dwarf-like thing being calm and speaking in deep voice was really creepy.

「で、ダイヤモンドをわたさぬといったら？」
　賊はおそるおそる、相手の気をひいてみるように、たずねました。

"If I said no?"
 The thief asked fearfully trying to attract it's attention.

「おまえの命がなくなるばかりさ。このピストルはね、いつもおまえが使うような、おもちゃじゃないんだぜ。」

"You just loose your life, that's all. This gun is not a toy like yours."

　観音さまは、このご隠居然とした白髪の老人が、そのじつ二十面相の変装姿であることを、ちゃんと知りぬいているようすでした。たぶん、さいぜんの手下の者との会話をもれ聞いて、それと、察したのでしょう。

It seemed like this Budda statue knew the old retiree was a Twenty Faces' disguise. It might have heard his conversation with his subordinates and comprehend.

「よしよし。おまえたちうまくやってくれた。これはほうびだ。どっかへ行って遊んでくるがいい。」

"Well, well. You guys, well done. This is the reward. Go somewhere and enjoy yourselves."

　三人の者に数枚の千円札をあたえて、その部屋を立ちさらせると、老人は、ガラス箱の布をゆっくりとりさって、そこにあったはだかろうそくを片手に、仏像の正面に立ち、ひらき戸になっているガラスのとびらをひらきました。

 He gave some thousand-yen bills, let them go. And then he took the rag off the glass box slowly and opened the door of the glass box with a candle in his hand.

「観音さま、二十面相の腕まえは、どんなもんですね。きのうは二百万円のダイヤモンド、きょうは国宝級の美術品です。このちょうしだと、ぼくの計画している大美術館も、まもなく完成しようというものですよ。ハハハ……、観音さま。あなたはじつによくできていますぜ。まるで生きているようだ。」

"Well, Budda, how did you like Twenty Faces' work. I got 2 million yen worth of diamonds yesterday and the national treasure claas art object today. At this rate I will soon be able to make a great museum I planned. Ha ha ha. Budda, you are very well made. You look like alive."

　ところが、読者諸君、そのときでした。二十面相のひとりごとが、終わるか終わらぬかに、彼のことばどおりに、じつにおそろしい奇跡がおこったのです。

 Then, my readers, at this moment, before Twenty Faces finished his monologue, a terrible miracle happend just like his words.

　木造の観音さまの右手が、グーッと前にのびてきたではありませんか。しかも、その指には、おきまりのハスの茎ではなくて一丁ちょうのピストルが、ピッタリと賊の胸にねらいをさだめて、にぎられていたではありませんか。

 Why, the right hand of the wooden statue suddenly reached out. Moreover, in it's fingers, there was not a lotus but a pistol pointing at him.

　仏像がひとりで動くはずはありません。

 There is no way the statue started to move by itself.

　では、この観音さまには、人造人間のような機械じかけがほどこされていたのでしょうか。しかし鎌倉時代の彫像に、そんなしかけがあるわけはないのです。すると、いったいこの奇跡はどうしておこったのでしょう。

Then, was this Kannon statue installed some mechanical parts like a cyborg? But there is no way a statue made in Kamakura period have that kind of thing. Then how this miracle happened?

　だが、ピストルをつきつけられた二十面相は、そんなことを考えているひまもありませんでした。彼は「アッ。」とさけんで、たじたじとあとじさりをしながら、手むかいしないといわぬばかりに、思わず両手を肩のところまであげてしまいました。

 Still Twenty Faces who was at the gun point didn't have a time to think about it. He just shouted "Oh," moved back and raised his hands over his shoulder as if he had no intention to fight back.

　さていっぽう、乞食に化けた二十面相は、風のように羽柴家の門をとびだし、小暗こぐらい横町にかくれて、すばやく乞食の着物をぬぎすてますと、その下には茶色の十徳姿じっとくすがたのおじいさんの変装が用意してありました。頭はしらが、顔もしわだらけの、どう見ても六十をこしたご隠居いんきょさまです。

Meanwhile, Twenty Faces in the disguise of a beggar ran from the gate of Hashibas and took the beggar clothe off, then he was in disguise of a old guy wearing a jacket. With white hair and face wrinkled, he looked like a 60's retiree.

　彼は姿をととのえると、かくし持っていた竹の杖つえをつき、背中をまるめて、よちよちと、歩きだしました。たとえ羽柴氏が約束を無視して、追っ手をさしむけたとしても、これでは見やぶられる気づかいはありません。じつに心にくいばかりの用意周到なやりくちです。

He composed himself, took a concealed cane and started plodding with round back. Even if Hashiba made people to run after him breaking the promise, they wouldn't recognize him. He was well prepared remarkably.

　老人は大通りに出ると、一台のタクシーを呼びとめて、乗りこみましたが、二十分もでたらめの方向に走らせておいて、べつの車に乗りかえ、こんどは、ほんとうのかくれがへいそがせました。

 When the old guy hit the broad street he caught a taxi, let it took the random direction, changed the car and head to his real hideout.

　車のとまったところは、戸山ヶ原とやまがはらの入り口でした。老人はそこで車をおりて、まっくらな原っぱをよぼよぼと歩いていきます。さては、賊の巣そうくつは戸山ヶ原にあったのです。

 The car stopped at the entrance of Toyamagahara. The old guy got off the car and plodded in the middle of dark field. Their hiding place was in Toyamagahara.

　原っぱのいっぽうのはずれ、こんもりとした杉林の中に、ポッツリと、一軒の古い洋館が建っています。荒れはてて住みてもないような建物です。老人は、その洋館の戸口を、トントントンと三つたたいて、少し間をおいて、トントンと二つたたきました。

 There was an old western style house stood alone in the cedar woods on the other side of the field. It was ruined, unlivable buiding. The old guy knocked the door three times, take a time and then knocked it twice.

　すると、これが仲間のあいずとみえて、中からドアがひらかれ、さいぜん仏像をぬすみだした手下のひとりが、ニュッと顔を出しました。

  Then, it looked like it was a sign among them, the door was opened and one of three thieves who took the statue poked his head.

　老人はだまったまま先に立って、ぐんぐん奥のほうへはいっていきます。廊下のつきあたりに、むかしは、さぞりっぱであったろうと思われる、広い部屋があって、その部屋のまんなかに、布をまきつけたままの仏像のガラス箱が、電燈もない、はだかろうそくの赤茶けた光に、照らしだされています。

 The old guy went into the back of the house in silence. At the end of the corridor there was a big room which used to be so grand and in the middle of it there was a packet of the glass box lighted by candles.

 

 

怪人二十面相 30

　いかにもそれは親子と見えるふたりの乞食でした。両人とも、ぼろぼろのうすよごれた着物を着て、にしめたような手ぬぐいでほおかむりをしています。

 Indeed they were two beggars, a father and a son seemingly. Both of them were wearing shabby clothe and cevering their heads with the horribly dirty towels.

「おまえたちはなんだ。こんなところへはいってきてはこまるじゃないか。」
　近藤老人がしかりつけますと、親の乞食がみょうな声で笑いだしました。

"Who are you. You can't come in here."
Kondou scolded them and the father beggar laughed with wierd voice.

「エヘヘヘヘヘ、お約束でございますよ。」
　わけのわからぬことをいったかと思うと、彼はやにわに走りだしました。まるで風のように、暗やみの中を、門の外へとびさってしまいました。

"He he he, it's the promise."
While they couldn't understand him he dashed suddenly. He ran away outside in the dark like a wind.

「おとうさま、ぼくですよ。」
　こんどは子どもの乞食が、へんなことをいいだすではありませんか。そして、いきなり、ほおかむりをとり、ぼろぼろの着物をぬぎすてたのを見ると、その下からあらわれたのは、見おぼえのある学生服、白い顔。子ども乞食こそ、ほかならぬ壮二君でした。

"Father, it's me."
 This time the child beggar started saying something odd. And he took the clothe and the covering on his head. Then they could see the familiar student uniform, white face, it was none other than Souji himself.

「どうしたのだ、こんなきたないなりをして。」
　羽柴氏が、なつかしい壮二君の手をにぎりながらたずねました。

 "Why are you wearing so dirty clothe."
Mr. Hashiba asked holding dear Souji's hands.

「何かわけがあるのでしょう。二十面相のやつが、こんな着物を着せたんです。でも、今までさるぐつわをはめられていて、ものがいえなかったのです。」

"There must be some reasons. Twenty Faces made him wear it. But he couldn't say anything because he was gagged until now.

　ああ、では今の親乞食こそ、二十面相その人だったのです。彼は乞食に変装をして、それとなく、仏像が運びだされたのを見きわめたうえ、約束どおり壮二君をかえして、逃げさったのにちがいありません。それにしても、乞食とは、なんという思いきった変装でしょう。乞食ならば、人の門前にうろついていても、さしてあやしまれないという、二十面相らしい思いつきです。

 Oh, then the father baggar was Twenty Faces himself. He disguised himself as a beggar, made sure the Budda statue was brought out, let Souji go as our promise and ran away, I must say. Anyway, a beggar, what a audacious disguse. If it was a beggar wandering around the front gate no one would take notice. This is the very idea of Twenty Faces.

　壮二君はぶじに帰りました。聞けば、先方では、地下室にとじこめられてはいたけれど、べつに虐待ぎゃくたいされるようなこともなく、食事もじゅうぶんあてがわれていたということです。

 Souji came back safely. By his story they learned that although he was cooped up in the basement, he wasn't abused and got enough food.

　これで羽柴家の大きな心配はとりのぞかれました。おとうさまおかあさまの喜びがどんなであったかは、読者諸君のご想像におまかせします。

 Now there was no great danger. I let the readers imagine freely how father and mother were happy about it.

怪人二十面相 29

　よしありげな刀剣とうけん、甲冑かっちゅう、置き物、手箱の類、びょうぶ、掛け軸などが、ところせましとならんでいるいっぽうのすみに、高さ一メートル半ほどの、長方形のガラス箱が立っていて、その中に、問題の観世音像が安置してあるのです。

 It was full of swords, suits of armor, ornaments, boxes, folding screens and scrolls, all looked prestigious. And in one corner there was The Kanzeon statue in a one-and-a-half merter high glass box.

　れんげの台座の上に、ほんとうの人間の半分ほどの大きさの、うす黒い観音様がすわっておいでになります。もとは金色こんじきまばゆいお姿だったのでしょうけれど、今はただ一面にうす黒く、着ていらっしゃるひだの多い衣ころもも、ところどころすりやぶれています。でも、さすがは名匠めいしょうの作、その円満柔和えんまんにゅうわなお顔だちは今にも笑いだすかと思われるばかり、いかなる悪人も、このお姿を拝しては、合掌がっしょうしないではいられぬほどにみえます。

 Half a human sized dark Budda statue was sitting on a lotus shaped pedestal. Maybe it used to be brilliant golden color but now it's just dark color and the clothe with many pleats were worn out in some places. Still it was by hand of the master craftman, the counenance was so peaceful and tender that it looked almost smiling, it would make even a villan to worship with folded hands.

　三人の泥棒は、さすがに気がひけるのか、仏像の柔和なお姿を、よくも見ないで、すぐさま仕事にかかりました。
「ぐずぐずしちゃいられねえ。大いそぎだぜ。」

Even the three thieves might feel awkward, they started working imidiately without looking at the tender Budda statue.
"We have no time to linger. Hurry."

　ひとりが持ってきたうすぎたない布のようなものをひろげますと、もうひとりの男が、そのはしを持って、仏像のガラス箱の外を、ぐるぐると巻いていきます。たちまち、それとわからぬ布包みができあがってしまいました。

 One of them unfolded a rag, other one picked up the end of it and wrapped the glass box of the statue. Soon there was just a packet you never know what there was in it.

「ほら、いいか。横にしたらこわれるぜ。よいしょ、よいしょ。」
　傍若無人のかけ声までして、三人のやつはその荷物を、表へ運びだします。

"Hey, alright? It'll be broken if we put it on the side. Heigh-ho! Heigh-ho!"
With some rude calls, they started bringing the packet out.

　壮太郎氏と近藤老人は、それがトラックの上につみこまれるまで、三人のそばにつききって、見はっていました。仏像だけ持ちさられて、壮二君がもどってこないでは、なんにもならないからです。

Soutarou and Kondou were sticking to them cautiously until they brought it to the truck. There was no point if they took the statue and there was no Souji.

　やがて、トラックのエンジンが、そうぞうしくなりはじめ、車は今にも出発しそうになりました。

 Soon the engine of the truck started making big noises and it looked almost get started.

「おい、壮二さんはどこにいるのだ。壮二さんをもどさないうちは、この車を出発させないぞ。もし、むりに出発すれば、すぐ警察に知らせるぞ。」
　近藤老人は、もう、一生けんめいでした。

"Hey, where is Souji. Until you give him back we won't let the car start. If you forced to go we notify the police now."
 Kondou was desperate.

「心配するなってえことよ。ほら、うしろを向いてごらん。坊ちゃんは、もうちゃんと玄関においでなさらあ。」
　ふりむくと、なるほど、玄関の電燈の前に、大きいのと小さいのと、二つの黒い人かげが見えます。

"Don't worry. Look, turn back. Your son is already at the front door."
When they turned back sure enough, there were big and small, two silhouettes under the light of the front door.

　壮太郎氏と老人とが、それに気をとられているうちに、
「あばよ……。」
　トラックは、門前をはなれて、みるみる小さくなっていきました。

 While Soutarou and Kondou were distructed by it,
"Bye."
The truck left the gate and got farther and farther.

　ふたりは、いそいで玄関の人かげのそばへひきかえしました。
「おや、こいつらは、さっきから門のところにいた親子の乞食じゃないか。さては、いっぱい食わされたかな。」

 The two of them rushed to those silhouette.
"Look, these two are the beggars whove been near the gate. So we might have deceived."
