The Water Bear animalcule 8 chairs which live in the micro world with a bear bug walk slow by a foot. Its form looks like a bear, so it's said to be a Water Bear. この世で一番強い生物はなんでしょうか？ライオンでしょうか？蟻でしょうか？人間でしょうか？残念ながら、どの生き物もかなわない最強生物がいます。それが「クマムシ」です。

 

クマムシとは、ミクロの世界に住む8脚の足でのそのそと歩く、緩歩動物。その姿が熊みたいなので、クマムシといわれています。カブトムシとか、カメムシとか単体の生き物の名称ではなく、1000種類ほどいるものの総称をクマムシと呼ぶのです。

 

クマムシがいかにして最強生命体なのか、その所以を紹介しましょう。

1　温度で最強！クマムシさんのすごいところの1つ目は温度への耐性。人間の細胞は55度あたりませ耐性がありますが、クマムシはなんと151度の高温でも大丈夫。

2　乾燥で最強！クマムシさん、通常はその85%が水分で出来ています。しかし、この水分を0.05%まで減らし、乾眠状態に入ることで、水分のない乾燥状態でも生きることができるのです。しかも、寿命はそこまで長くなく、通常1ヶ月～1年ほどで死んでしまうクマムシですが、この乾眠状態になると9年間も生きられるのです。

3　圧力で最強！宇宙空間は空気がありません。クマムシはそんな真空状態でも生きることができるので、宇宙空間でも10日間ほど生きられることが確認されています。さらに、75,000気圧にまで耐えられるので、深海もへっちゃらです！

4　放射線で最強！紫外線やエックス線など、人間の致死量は500レントゲンですが、クマムシの場合は57万レントゲンにも耐えることができます。

地球には数百万の生き物がいますが、このように環境が変わっても適応できる生き物はクマムシくらい。

こういった苛酷環境におかれても、乾眠状態、仮死状態、塩眠状態、冬眠状態になり生き延び、そして元の環境になると、そのまま何事もなく動き出すのです。まさに最強の名にふさわしい生物。

「HOAX」であれば、そういったような意味もあります。
正しくは、悪ふざけや嘘で「いっぱい食わせる」とか「（人を）かつぐ」といった状況で使います。
この元になった「hocus（hocuspocus）」は、インチキな呪文・まじない、あるいは、ごまかし・でたらめの意味も持ちます。単に手品などを指す場合にも使います。
この語源自体が「でたらめな」ラテン語もどきの呪文です（ちちんぷいぷい… のような、まじない言葉です）。
死語とは言いませんが、日常生活で頻繁に使うような言葉でもないですね。

ゴキブリはその見た目や生態から不快害虫として忌み嫌う人が多いですが、生命力は非常に強く、「核戦争で人類が滅亡したら、生き残ったゴキブリが地球を支配するのではないか」という都市伝説が囁かれる存在でもあります。しかし、本当に核戦争が起きたとして、ゴキブリはその中で生き残れるのでしょうか。

ゴキブリに照射された放射線量は1000rad、1万rad、10万radの3種類。1000radは人間だと10分で死に至るというほどの放射線吸収量ですが、ゴキブリは半数が生き残りました。また、1万radでも10％が生き残り、10万radだとすべてのゴキブリが死亡しました。

ここで出てくるrad(ラド)は吸収した放射線の総量を表す単位。物質1kgから1J(ジュール(の仕事に相当するエネルギーが与えられるとき(1J/kg)の吸収線量を1Gy(グレイ)と定義しますが、1rad＝0.01Gyにあたります。放射線関係のニュースでは「ミリシーベルト」「マイクロシーベルト」が用いられていますが、こちらは1Gyに放射線の種類ごとに定められた人体への障害の受けやすさの係数をかけて算出するもので、あくまで人体に対する影響を考えるための単位として作られているため、「1rad＝何シーベルト」という換算はできません。

実験結果からは「ゴキブリは人間よりも放射線に強く、核戦争で人類が滅亡しても生き残っている可能性がある」というが確認されました。

しかし、自然界にはゴキブリよりもはるかに放射線に強い生物が多く存在していて、たとえばコマユバチはゴキブリが全滅する10万ラドの放射線吸収量でも生存が可能。
