11/14 Schatte -The Witch and the Fake Shadow-

This is the first game that I have translated for the whole thing.

I usually only work through translation agencies, but I happened to get acquainted with the developer of this game.
Anyhow, I fell in love with the gameplay and had to get involved with the translation.

If you are a fan of Ocarina of Time and the new capture feature in Mario Odyssey, this game is like a mix of the two. The shadow binding technique is similar to that of Shikamaru in Naruto, if you are familiar with that series.

If you use Shadow Bind and throw a knife at an enemy's shadow, then that enemy will pause for a while. Then, you can jump on that enemy's shadow to release it from a state of being possessed by Fake Shadows, a legendary demon type thing with no real body. You can see the small lantern bat too. That's Lumiere, your familiar. You get to control him too to cast a light on enemies and other objects. You can also just press the auto lock button to automatically target enemies. This process is surprisingly smooth making the gameplay real fun.

This is Stage Select. You can always replay prior stages from here. It's not too obvious at start, but you'll eventually understand how things work. BTW, the menu button for an XBOX 360 controller was pressing the right stick in. Really quite not obvious. But its not a real issue once you figure it out.

The story would take you about 6 to 7 hours to finish I think. It is not a very long game, but it was a real pleasure going through it (even if it was for work).

The Steam intro that I recently edited is quite short, so I just thought of writing a short review here.

Story:

You are Schatte, a shadow mage that holds the greatest talent in the art in a village of Shadow Guardians who has been thrown out of her village for a while due to declining to succeed the duties of Shadow Guardian. One day the village is assaulted by a demon known as the Shadow Demon which was also called Fake Shadow in a distant past. The Shadow Demon is a haze with no real body, so the act of resealing it needs some expert advice. Schatte and her servant Lumiere ventures to meet Alma, the former Shadow Guardian to seek advice...

Here's the Steam website:

I'm not going to say my translation is perfect, especially since I was the only one working on it and had no one check it. However, I did a decent job and took my time for this project. I also had lots of fun in the process. My favorite character is Lumiere who is actually called Lanta in the original Japanese. I gave him a bit more character in the English version to spice up the dialogue a bit. It's so easy to give interesting personalities in Japanese through speech, but I tried going around this in English by adding some French aspects to Lumiere. There are a few things I think I can improve as I am playing the English version now for the first time, but I am able to play through it without having to pause and ask myself, "what the hell are they saying?!" This is a good thing.

This is when the Shadow Demon is being dispersed from a possessed monster. It's quite interesting how all these monsters are really calm after being released. Perhaps they get tamed after being released.

This is how it looks when you get into one of those monsters released from the Fake Shadow.Using their abilities is necessary to beat the game.

The feeling of the game is not too different from past games, but the protagonist's skills are quite unique and stomping on shadows is a lot of fun. I would buy the game when it comes on Switch. For now I will enjoy the PC version that was given to me.

Hope this review helped!
