其大后石之日賣命、甚多嫉妬。故、天皇所使之妾者、不得臨宮中、言立者、足母阿賀迦邇嫉妬。自母下五字以音。爾天皇、聞看吉備海部直之女・名黑日賣、其容姿端正、喚上而使也。然、畏其大后之嫉、逃下本國、天皇坐高臺、望瞻其黑日賣之船出浮海、以歌曰、
淤岐幣邇波 袁夫泥都羅羅玖 久漏邪夜能 摩佐豆古和藝毛 玖邇幣玖陀良須
故、大后聞是之御歌、大忿、遣人於大浦、追下而、自步追去。於是天皇、戀其黑日賣、欺大后曰「欲見淡道嶋。」而、幸行之時、坐淡道嶋、遙望歌曰、
淤志弖流夜 那爾波能佐岐用 伊傳多知弖 和賀久邇美禮婆 阿波志摩 淤能碁呂志摩 阿遲摩佐能 志麻母美由 佐氣都志摩美由
乃自其嶋傳而、幸行吉備國。爾黑日賣、令大坐其國之山方地而、獻大御飯。於是爲煮大御羹、採其地之菘菜時、天皇到坐其孃子之採菘處、歌曰、
夜麻賀多邇 麻祁流阿袁那母 岐備比登登 等母邇斯都米婆 多怒斯久母阿流迦
天皇上幸之時、黑日賣獻御歌曰、
夜麻登幣邇 爾斯布岐阿宜弖 玖毛婆那禮 曾岐袁理登母 和禮和須禮米夜
又歌曰、
夜麻登幣邇 由玖波多賀都麻 許母理豆能 志多用波閇都都 由久波多賀都麻
≪英訳≫
Empress Iwahime was exceedingly jealous. As a result, the women in the service of the Emperor were not allowed to enter the palace. Whenever things happened, she would rub her feet and be jealous. Yet, the Emperor had heard about a woman named Kurohime, the daughter of Amabe no Atae of the Kibi region, and he had been told of her beauty. He summoned her to the palace. However, fearing the Empress’s jealousy, she fled down to her homeland. The Emperor, being in Taka Dono(the high palace), saw her ship set sail and composed this poem:
In the direction of the open sea,
Rowboats follow one another,
Those are for my beloved one,
Returning to her homeland.
Hearing this song, Empress Iwahime was greatly angered. She sent someone to the location of the ship, and they forced Kurohime off the ship and made her walk, driving her away. At this point, the Emperor deeply admired Kurohime and deceived the Empress, saying he wished to see Awaji Island. When he arrived at Awaji Island, from a distance he gazed and composed this poem:
From the shining sea by cape of Naniwa,
Venture out and look at my lands,
Ahajima, Onogoroshima,
Adzimasa island can also be seen.
Saketu Island is also visible.
The Emperor came from that island and arrived in the country of Kibi. There, Princess Kurohime guided him to the garden of the country and offered him food. While attempting to offer a pot of hot porridge, the Emperor came to the place where the princess was picking vegetables and sang a song:
“Even the vegetables sown in the fields of the mountains,
When picked together with the people of Kibi,
How joyous it is.”
When the Emperor returned to the capital, the song Princess Kurohime had offered went:
“Just as the western wind blows toward Yamato,
Even if the clouds move apart and separate,
I shall not forget you.”
Furthermore,
“As for the person who will go to Yamato,
Who shall it be?
Like the water below the ground, deep in my heart,
Who shall it be?
≪この英文の和訳≫
皇后の石（いわ）の姫の命(みこと)は、非常に嫉妬深いお方でした。そのため、天皇のお使いになった女性たちは、宮中に入ることが許されませんでした。何か事が起こると、足擦(あしずり)してお妬みになられました。ところが、天皇は吉備（きび）の海部（あまべ）の直（あたえ）の女(むすめ)、黒姫(くろひめ)という方の美しさを耳にし、彼女を宮に召されお使いになりました。しかし、皇后の嫉妬を恐れて、彼女は故郷に逃げ下りました。天皇は高殿にお出でになり、黒姫の船が出るのをご覧になり、次のような歌を詠まれました。
「沖の方に小舟が続いている。あれは愛しのあの子が、故郷に帰るための船だ」
この歌を聞かれた皇后は大変お怒りになり、船の出るところに人をやって、黒姫を船から降ろさせ、歩かせて追い出されました。ここで天皇は黒姫に深い思いを寄せ、皇后を欺いて「淡路島を見たい」と仰られました。そして淡路島にお出でになり、遠くを見渡して、次のような歌を詠まれました。
「輝く海の難波(なにわ)の岬から、立ち出でて我が国見れば、阿波島(アワシマ)やオノゴロ島、アジマサの島も見え、サケツ島も見える」
天皇はその島から伝えられて吉備の国にお越しになりました。そこで、黒姫がその国の山の御園にご案内申し上げて、お食事を献げました。羮（あつもの）を献げようとして青菜を採っている時、天皇がその孃子（おとめ）の青菜を採る場所においでになり、お歌を詠まれました。その歌は次の通りです。
「山の畑に蒔いた青菜も、
吉備の人々と一緒に摘むと、
楽しいことだな」
天皇が都にお帰りになる際、黒姫が献げた歌は次の通りです。
「大和の方へ西風が吹き上げて、
雲が離れるように離れていても、
忘れることは致しません。」
また、
「大和の方へ行くのはどなたでしょう。
地の下の水のように、心の奥底で物思いをして、
行くのはどなたでしょう」
