“Mr. Abe's 'under control' remark, that was a lie," Japan’s former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said during a news conference in early September. Mr. Koizumi’s criticism refers to the speech given in 2013 by Japan’s current Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to the International Olympic Committee in order to secure a 2020 Tokyo Olympics and allay fears of athletes’ and visitors’ exposure to radiation from the atomic meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi. By citing repeated government and utility errors like Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO) most recent failed attempt to contain the radioactive ground water leaking from the nuclear reactor site by constructing the world’s largest “ice wall”, Mr. Koizumi clearly illustrated that the cleanup of Fukushima Daiichi is completely out-of-control. Mr. Koizumi also confessed that after the atomic disaster at Fukushima, "I studied the process, reality and history of the introduction of nuclear power and became ashamed of myself for believing such lies."
