Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.	87年前、私たちの父たちはこの大陸に、自由の精神に抱かれた、誰もが平等という前提に捧げられた新しい国をつくりました。
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.	今私たちは、大きな内戦を戦っています、それはそのように作られた国が長く続くことができるのかを試すためなのです。私たちはその激戦地で合い見えることになりました。私たちは、この国の存続をかけ、ここに命を賭した人たちの最後の安息地としてこの戦場の一部を捧げるためここにきました。私たちがこうすることは全く当然で適切なのです。
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us―that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion―that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain―that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom―and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.	しかし、広い意味では、私たちはこの土地を捧げることも、聖別することも、奉納することもできません。勇敢な男たちが、ここで戦った者たち、生き残った者も亡くなった者も、私たちの力がつけ加えたり差し引いたりすることができないほど、すでに聖別してしまっているからです。世界は私たちがここで言うことを気にしたり思い出すことはほとんどないでしょうが、彼らがここでしたことを決して忘れることはないでしょう。むしろ私たち生きている者が、ここで戦った人たちが気高くもこんなに遠くまで押し進めた未完の仕事に身を捧げるべきなのです。むしろここで私たちが目の前に残されている大きな責務に身を捧げるべきなのです、つまりこれらの名誉の戦死を遂げた人たちが最後の力をふり絞ってまで身を捧げた大義を引き継ぐという責務に、これらの死者たちが決して無駄死にしたのではないとはっきりと証明するという責務に、神の下でこの国が新しい自由を生み出すという責務に、そして人民による人民のための人民による政府がこの世から決して消滅することがないようにする責務に身を捧げるべきなのです。
