China's Nobel Peace Prize-winning dissident Liu Xiaobo
(劉暁波) died of liver cancer on Friday.
Liu had expressed a desire to receive treatment in Germany
or the United States. China, however, rejected coldly.
A spokesperson for the EU delegation in Beijing said it had
discussed the activist’s case with the authorities and asked
“that China immediately grant Mr. Liu parole on humanitarian
grounds and allow him to receive medical assistance at a place
of his choosing in China or overseas”.
Liu, a veteran democracy activist and writer who became a
lifelong campaigner after witnessing the 1989 Tiananmen
crackdown. He persisted in non-violence throughout his life.
He continued to propose democratic national management to
the Communist Party leadership.
He was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer in May
while serving an 11-year prison sentence for subversion. He
was released on medical parole on 26 June, and has since been
held, reportedly under police guard, in a hospital in north-east
China, where authorities insist he is receiving “meticulous
treatment”. It is regrettable that a democratic activist in
China died.

劉氏はドイツで、または米国で治療を受けたいと
いう願いを表明していた。しかし、中国は冷たく
拒否した。
北京でEU代表団のスポークスパーソンは、活動家
の事件について当局と話し合い、中国は直ちに劉氏に
人道的援助を与え、自分が選んだ場所で医療援助を
受けることができるようにすべきであると要求して
いた。
劉氏は、ベテランの民主化運動家であり、1989年
の天安門を目撃していた。彼は、生涯、非暴力を
貫き、中国共産党指導部に対して民主的な国家運営を
提案し続けた。
11年間の懲役刑を務めているさなか、後期肝がん
と診断された。 彼は6月26日に仮釈放され、その後
伝えられるところによれば警察の警備下の病院で
（当局がいうところの）ていねいな手当を受けていた。
民主主義の活動家が亡くなったことが残念である。
