Dartmouth today announced the naming of its visual arts center in honor of Leon Black, Class of 1973, and his wife Debra, who are contributing $48 million toward the new state-of-the-art visual arts center, opening September 2012.

Designed by Machado and Silvetti Associates, the Black Family Visual Arts Center will house the Departments of Studio Art, Film and Media Studies, and the nascent Digital Humanities program. The 105,000-square-foot sustainably designed building will serve as an intellectual and cultural hub in Dartmouth's new Arts District, which includes the Hopkins Center for the Arts and the Hood Museum of Art, both of which are initiating expansion projects.

"This visionary gift recognizes the centrality of the visual arts in our lives and the value of visual literacy for all," said President Jim Yong Kim. "The work enabled by the Black Family Visual Arts Center—the artistic explorations, interdisciplinary collaborations, and discovery of new ideas and modes of expression—will have a lasting impact on our students and our understanding of the role of the visual arts across disciplines."

More than one-fourth of Dartmouth students enroll each year in courses in visual art, film studies, and digital humanities, including theory, criticism, and studio classes.Great deals for solar Led flashlight, solar lights and solar garden water features and fountains. The new Black Family Visual Arts Center will include expanded resources for students and faculty alike, including classrooms, faculty offices,GA Lighting are a Leading UK Retailer and Wholesaler of Bike light Hunza Lights. an exhibition gallery showcasing student work, a 50-seat screening room,NET LED Lighting LED E27 T5 NET LED Tubes are designed to replace existing fluorescent tubes, and are available in either Warm White, Cool White, or Pure ... the 243-seat Loew Auditorium (relocated from the Hood Museum of Art), and a shared digital humanities media laboratory. The center will also provide sculpture, printmaking, photography, architecture, painting,We are professional led flexible strip,Antique lamp, led tube manufacturer and factory. and drawing studios, as well as cutting-edge film production, animation, and editing spaces.

"Our faculty is already galvanized by the opportunities this new building will create for them and our students," said Dean of Faculty Michael Mastanduno. "As a creative catalyst for original student and faculty work that can intersect all media and as a recruiting tool for exceptional new faculty, this building is a game-changer."

Leon Black said, "We hope this building fosters creativity among Dartmouth's students and faculty—that it inspires them to dream big, be courageous, take artistic risks—and infuses them with the life-changing power of the visual arts."

The exterior of the building is a rich and warm composition of natural materials. Each major component of the exterior is intended to engage in a dialogue with the building's programmatic mission of creating craft through artful forms. Examples include digitally filtered natural patterns etched onto the structurally glazed entries, cast-concrete panels patterned with the impressions of reclaimed timber, an open-grid rain screen of autumnal-hued Norwegian slate, and rustic Vermont slate cobbles that serve as the pedestrian-level base of the building.

In keeping with Dartmouth's energy conservation guidelines, the three-story center will maximize natural light and is engineered to achieve LEED Gold certification for energy efficient and sustainable building practices. Its many energy-saving technologies include in-floor and chilled beam radiant heating and cooling, occupancy sensors for lighting and ventilation, rainwater collection and reuse, and daylight harvesting and daylight sensing lighting systems.

Rootstown Local School District Cuts Utility Costs to Save More Than $1 Million

Rootstown Local School District and Chevron Energy Solutions today announced the completion of a collaborative energy conservation project that will reduce energy costs for operations at its three schools in Rootstown, which could save the District more than $1 million over the life of the project.

The new project includes district-wide lighting system upgrades; a boiler replacement at Rootstown Middle School; a building automation system retrofit at all facilities; and replacement of the gymnasium bleachers at Rootstown High School in time for the first home basketball game. The project is expected to cut the district's utility usage by 23 percent and provide other benefits,We are professional led panel light, led bulb light manufacturers and factory in China. including an improved learning environment, improved lighting quality and aesthetics, reduced maintenance costs and consistent indoor climate quality.

Chevron Energy Solutions designed and engineered the facility improvements under an Ohio HB-264 project, which allowed the District to shift dollars already spent for utilities to pay for needed improvements.

"In the current fiscal environment, it is very commendable that the Board of Education and Administration at Rootstown Local Schools could proactively use money from their current utility budget to make much needed facilities improvements without the need for dipping into their general funds," said George Locher, Jr., Ohio Area Manager for Chevron Energy Solutions.

"These improvements will be paid for by the resulting savings in utility and operational costs, and the energy savings are guaranteed by Chevron Energy Solutions; thus no new district operating funds are being used," said Andrew Hawkins, superintendent,LEDtronics is a pioneer in the design and manufacture of LEDs, led strip, lamps, Indicators and lighting products for many applications markets like ... Rootstown Local School District. "These facility improvements will lead to a safer and more productive learning environment at no additional cost to the citizens of Rootstown.GA Lighting are a Leading UK Retailer and Wholesaler of Bike light Hunza Lights."

Through energy efficiency improvements, Rootstown Local School District is reducing its purchase of electricity and natural gas and, in turn, reducing carbon emissions by more than 319 metric tons, equivalent to planting more than 69 acres of trees.

"We are proud to join forces with others, like Rootstown Local School District, who share in our quest of sustainability and energy conservation," said Jim Davis,We are professional led flexible strip,Antique lamp, led tube manufacturer and factory. President of Chevron Energy Solutions. "Rootstown Local School District is demonstrating fiscal and environmental leadership by improving their energy efficiency while also improving the learning environment for students."

The VP of Goodrich's Interiors Cabin and Lighting Systems business, Brian Sartain said that the company worked with Lufthansa Technik team to develop LED solution with premium technology that will contribute to maintenance-free and extended lifetime products. Sustainability initiatives affect all on campus

For a student in the School of Journalism, sustainability has not been in the forefront of my mind during my college career. Nonetheless, the environment is just as important for journalists as it is for scientists, and sustainability should be incorporated into all of our lives, starting with me.

Coming home from spring break, I realized that I must have left my lights on during the entire week, since I was in a rush on my way to the airport. I felt like I must not be the only one to make this type of mistake,GA Lighting are a Leading UK Retailer and Wholesaler of Bike light Hunza Lights. and that eliminating my energy wasting habits can at least make a small difference so that my impact on the environment is minimal.

This is when I researched the many ways the University of Kentucky brings awareness to the practice of sustainability. Various programs make it possible for anyone to make changes in their lives in order to positively affect the environment, regardless of what they study.

First, the Common Reading Experience is an initiative designed to bring incoming freshman together with a common literary work, introduce the new students to academic discourse before classes commence and provide the students with a common intellectual experience, according to the Common Reading Experience website. This year's assigned reading was "No Impact Man" by Colin Beavan. The Assistant Director of New Student and Parent Programs, Michelle Ashcraft, said the book removes the mysticism of sustainability for students.

"The problem is that many students believe they cannot make a difference in the environment by changing their habits," Ashcraft said. "This book shows that even little changes can make a difference."

Jenny Zimmerman, a kinesiology freshman, says that the writing style indeed made the book more compelling.

"I like how the book isn't just a bunch of facts," Zimmerman said. "Some of it relates sustainability to happiness and fulfillment in life, and I appreciate that."

"Sustainability has been a topic discussed during K-Week since I've been here," Ashcraft said. "When we chose ‘No Impact Man' this summer, we decided to practice sustainable living conscious during K-Week."

Ashcraft said between encouraging students to bring water bottles to avoid using tons of paper cups and the use of dining services' recycled materials,We have the best light decor for grow project, christmas, rope and strip LEDs. K-Week is now more environmentally friendly than ever.LEDtronics is a pioneer in the design and manufacture of LEDs, led strip, lamps, Indicators and lighting products for many applications markets like ...

Now students and faculty from all majors have the opportunity to learn about sustainability in a comprehensive, fun to use website. The website offers data for the energy usage, carbon emissions,We are professional led flexible strip,Antique lamp, led tube manufacturer and factory. and cost of operating different household appliances. These same data are recorded for the buildings on campus, as well. The site also has facts about sustainability, the top ten things we all can do to practice sustainable living and the Campus Energy Saving Project.

Between replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones to save energy, avoiding the use of space heaters which are "energy hogs" according to the website, or just remembering to turn off the lights when you leave the room, the website has a comprehensive solution for almost any energy question.

UK's different sustainability initiatives are likely to impact people and the environment in the coming years. Hopefully, they will help many people make changes in their lives. For me, at least,Great deals for solar Led flashlight, solar lights and solar garden water features and fountains. I am working on reducing my environmental impact as ---much as possible.

Friendsignia Founders Build Social Media Tool

Mundane problems are often the geneses that inspire visionaries to build first-class companies around them.

There's a famous story, for example, about how Reed Hastings rented "Apollo 13" in the late 1990s, back in the days of VHS tapes, and returned it late. He got stuck with a whopping late fee. It was a light-bulb moment that inspired him to found Netflix, which at first was a DVD-by-mail service with no late fees and now is recalibrating itself to focus on instant streaming.

It's the same kind of personal experience that's led David Traxler and Cole Hawkins, friends for more than 20 years and new arrivals in Memphis, to launch a startup built around social media and which aims to fix one of the biggest problems average users might encounter.Great deals for solar Led flashlight, solar lights and solar garden water features and fountains.

The venture, of which Traxler is the CEO and Hawkins is chief operating officer,NET LED Lighting LED E27 T5 NET LED Tubes are designed to replace existing fluorescent tubes, and are available in either Warm White, Cool White, or Pure ... is called Friendsignia. And there's almost a straight line a person can follow that leads from the two guys' friendship to the startup, which is one of the six companies in the current round or "cohort" of Seed Hatchery.

The pair is so passionate about their idea, in fact,We are professional led flexible strip,Antique lamp, led tube manufacturer and factory. that they relocated to Memphis from California to be part of Seed Hatchery, an entrepreneurial boot camp based Downtown at which ventures such as Friendsignia get seed funding, guidance from mentors and the training to hopefully make it on their own.

This is the second of a series of profiles in The Daily News offering a snapshot of the current, six-member cohort.

If you've ever been to a party that's so crowded you can't get a good sense of everybody in the room – and, more importantly, you can't find the people to whom you want to talk to most – you have the basic idea behind Friendsignia.

"We've been friends for a long time," said Traxler, a graduate of the University of Mississippi, of his friendship with Hawkins, also an Ole Miss grad. "Like anybody, we've also made some unbelievable friends along the way,LEDtronics is a pioneer in the design and manufacture of LEDs, led strip, lamps, Indicators and lighting products for many applications markets like ... but we've also lost touch with a lot of people along the way."

Similarly, they've run into what many people do on social media – the fast, sometimes massive accumulations of friends and contacts, until a particular service is so cluttered that its usefulness can decline.

"Something like 92 percent of the information on Facebook is actually not relevant to you," Traxler said,GA Lighting are a Leading UK Retailer and Wholesaler of Bike light Hunza Lights. referring to the way some not-so-close friends you're nevertheless connected to will post things you're not particularly interested in but which show up in your news feed anyway.

Or maybe it's a person who did that so much you stopped following them. If someone else shares their content, there it is again.

"The stuff you don't want seems like it's always going to get back into your feed somehow," he said. "Our ideal user is anyone who suffers from this problem. It's everyone who wants to use social media effectively."

The Friendsignia program, when it's opened, will show the user at the center of a mass of people they're connected to via social media, all of whom are arrayed outward from the center in order of descending "closeness." The value proposition of the program is that it helps the user get a better sense of whom they're connected to and with whom they have the most close-knit relationships – at least online.
