Priced at around $30 each at present, an incubator facility for the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, TN, has completed a large-scale commercial lighting project using LEDs throughout the headquarters facility of Outpost Solar in Pulaski, TN, a maker of solar-energy systems. The project was made possible with an Innovation Grant from the Tennessee Solar Institute.
Wilson Stevenson, president of Outpost Solar, said, "We are very pleased with the light quality of our new building. We believe we are the first commercial industrial building in the TVA footprint to be completely illuminated using LED lighting."
Outpost Solar's 40,000-square-foot manufacturing area uses 180 Manhattan high-bay luminaires, which deliver 7926 lm while consuming 84W for an efficacy of 96 lm/W. The building's exterior, security and parking lot use 14 LED cobrahead luminaires to save an estimated $20,000 over the life of the fixtures. Both the high-bay luminaires and cobraheads are supplied with a 10-year warranty.
The high-bay luminaires and cobrahead street lights utilize a graphite-foam technology licensed exclusively by LED North America from ORNL to passively cool the LEDs and ensure the lights operate at cooler temperatures. A recent price check at five different retailers in Midland indicated that flat-screen TVs are selling for as low as $149 for 22-inch sets; $195 for 32-inch sets; $398 for 42-inch sets; $599 for 50-inch sets; and $998 for 55-inch sets.

Volner said plasma TVs typically refresh the picture at a faster rate than LCDs and LEDs, making it more enjoyable to watch fast-action programming -- such as sports -- on plasma.
"(I've noticed a drop in prices), especially on the plasmas. Honestly, it's older technology; they've been around for quite some time," she said. "But plasma is my favorite TV. I'm a sports person. I love sports, and (a plasma TV) is better for (watching) fast action."
According to Volner, one advantage of LCD and LED televisions is that they are more energy-efficient and run cooler than a typical plasma TV.
"A lot of customers buy LCDs. I think (some customers) are afraid to go with LEDs, because of the (complex) technology," she noted. "The LED has 3D (capability) and a full web browser and the smart applications. Nabil said he told them he was fasting to express himself.
A government official denied his accusations of ill-treatment, and said the blogger was suffering from disorientation as a result of his solitary confinement.
