Where's the truck?

The trend did not stop after I moved to Istanbul, where I changed districts to be closer to my workplace or my husband's job after we married. My first Istanbul move was pretty easy, given that I had arrived in Turkey with only two allotted bags courtesy of airline regulations. I had been housed for five weeks in a flat owned by the school where I was getting my teaching certificate. Once I found a job and needed to move into the school lodgings in Erenkoy, moving was as easy as calling my Turkish friends for a ride in their car to my new digs. The school provided basic necessities.

My fellow American roommate quickly went shopping for towels, sheets, a vacuum cleaner, an iron and other small things that we needed. While my lodging was in Erenkoy on the Asian side of the city, I actually worked at the campus on the European side of the city in the Maslak district. My commute was terrible, so I opted after a year-and-a-half to find my own housing closer to work. I found a lovely, affordable flat in Tarabya, only 10 minutes from my job. The flat was fully furnished, much more than what the school provided. Moving from a furnished flat to another furnished flat once again was just a call to a friend with a car who was willing to transport my now four bags and me across the city. 

I lived in Tarabya happily for a few years until I decided to change my job. I also decided to move in with Can to a flat which he owned close to the airport where he took classes. It would also be closer to my new school. By this time, I had more than a carload worth of stuff to move.Our dry cabinet can sustain an ultra-low humidity of under 5% RH. The truck was pretty rickety and small, but we got my stuff safely to my new flat.

One of our close friends had just moved from Istanbul to Ankara and their company had an agreement with a moving company. Their move went flawlessly. 

I was very pregnant at the time and so we didn't want to mess around with logistics too much. We hired these movers, who were professional in every sense of the word, except for their irrational fear of our two cats. They came the day before our move to pack our stuff up and showed up early the following day to load the truck and transport it. We lived in a site, a guarded apartment complex. A week before our move we had to give notice and get permission from the general manager's office of the complex to allow the moving truck in. Most site complexes in Istanbul have similar rules, so be aware when moving. While all moves are stressful, this one in comparison with our most recent move was pretty easy.You must first understand the way a wind power generators works.

Streaming the Bay Lights

A Medford technology services company helped bring an $8 million light sculpture on San Francisco's Bay Bridge to the Internet masses last week with just minutes to spare before deadline.

After two years of planning, the sculpture was set to be illuminated with much fanfare March 5. But glitches and vendor bailouts left the project's organizer, Illuminate the Arts, without a way to stream live video of the sculpture online as promised. 

Enter Cael Weston and Acme Computer of Medford. His mission: to acquire "a massive amount of bandwidth," weave together all partners on the Internet and get the high-definition streaming video online at thebaylights.org in 60 hours, Weston said. 

"I was pretty sure we could do it," Weston said Monday. "It was madness. I managed to get top-notch people all working together on it, both my team and client vendors. It was a small job for us, but with a tight time frame. It was great to be part of something this spectacular that pushed my team to the limit."

The two big challenges were finding bandwidth and pushing the video feed up to the Bay Lights website, said Weston, who joined the project in mid-February when Acme was tasked to install a high-definition robot video cam on the Hotel Vitale at Mission and The Embarcadero to capture the nightly light shows for the next two years. 

Acme pulled in Pusher Inc., a Web development and software engineering firm in Dunsmuir, Calif. They persuaded Hotel Vitale to let them use its connection and provide enough bandwidth to stream high-definition images. 

Next they had to engineer a system that could stream the video simultaneously to an anticipated 250,000 Internet viewers Tuesday night, a feat they accomplished with the help of LiveStream. 

"It was a pretty exciting little project with an amazing time line," said Acme Vice President Sean Garland of Mount Shasta. "We threw every resource we had into it." 

At 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high, "The Bay Lights" is said by backers to be the largest LED light sculpture in the world. It is strung on 100,000 feet of vertical suspension cables and shows impressionistic images of fish and waves moving across its length. The lights can't be viewed by cars on the bridge. According to the website, it costs $15.06 a night in electricity.

New technologies may push wind energy

Despite credit extension, questions remain in wind projects

While the wind industry has rejoiced after the federal government voted earlier this week to extend the production tax credit — contributing more than $12 billion in taxpayer dollars to the renewable energy industry over the next decade — important questions remain as new studies are either wrapping up or just beginning.

Four acoustic firms in Wisconsin released a study last month that says commercial wind turbines generate "dangerous levels" of low-frequency noise. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency also states that turbines must create less than 50 decibels of noise to minimize impacts, which typically forces larger setbacks. However, the MPCA does not measure wind turbines for LFN impacts.

Critics of wind developments say those distances are inadequate. They cite countries such as Denmark, which requires setbacks of about 2,000 feet and Holland, which requires 3,280 feet. Germany's noise-based standards range up to a full mile.

The New Era wind project in Goodhue County offered a setback of 1,500 feet. The county board responded by adopting an ordinance that required roughly half a mile. New Era and the EcoHarmony wind project, among others, may also be facing additional hurdles in the future. According to the RFP, bat fatalities are projected as high as 25 per year per megawatt. Minnesota had 2,500 MW installed in 2010 — fourth-most in the U.S. — and must add an additional 4,000 MW by 2025 to meet its Renewable Portfolio Standard approved in 2007.

The final state-mandated permitting hurdle for New Era, which is 78 MW, is developing a comprehensive Avian and Bat Protection Plan; the initial attempt was rejected by the Minnesota PUC in 2012 as inadequate and a revised copy was submitted a few weeks ago.

EcoHarmony, the 280-megawatt project in Fillmore County, is located near Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park. Many turbines are sited in close proximity to bat hibernation sites. The DNR and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service have both expressed written concerns to that effect, dubbing it a "high risk" site for bats.
