EYTHORNE and the surrounding villages are set to become a new hub of renewable energy with plans on the way for two wind turbines and a solar array the size of 14 football pitches.
Ovenden Plant Hire Ltd has tabled plans for the solar panels at the former site of Tilmanstone Brickworks in Pike Road, Eythorne, which would involve the movement of around 250,000 cubic metres of soil to the area for recontouring purposes.

"A solar array appears to be a different matter altogether and on the face of it more acceptable, providing it is at a low level, albeit very close to my house." But Kent Green Party supports the plans, arguing the area should be paving the way for a renewable energy future.
Co-ordinator Steve Dawe said: "I don't accept the objections of some if they are happy to have all these electricity pylons on the landscape as well.
"They are no more obtrusive than those. "It is also perfectly possible to hedge round solar panels so that they almost disappear.
"We have the advantage of a very large land area in Kent and should be taking all the advantages from this in terms of employment and the provision future energy security."
The remains of British soldiers could be disturbed if a plan to build a wind farm on the site of a First World War battlefield goes ahead.
Energy firm InnoVent wants to build 10 turbines – each twice the height of Big Ben – on the site of the 1915 Battle of Loos, near Calais, where tens of thousands died.
The Leicester Regiment alone lost more than 500 men in just seven days. Veterans' relatives also fear the turbines will ruin the setting of cemeteries in the area.

That’s Alvin Davis, as solid a person as I’ve ever encountered in baseball, dating to my very first spring covering the Mariners as a fledgling reporter for the now defunct Journal-American in 1986.
Davis was in his heyday then, just two years removed from his breakout Rookie of the Year and All-Star season in ‘84. He was on the way to forging the career that made him the first inductee of the Mariners’ Hall of Fame.
His warmth and friendliness has always been Davis’ calling card, even as he endured one losing season after another. Davis was often the best thing they had going, until the Mariners finally reached .500 for the first time in franchise history in 1991. That would be his final season in Seattle.
And now Davis is back in a Mariners uniform for the first time since he left in 1992 to sign with the Angels.
With his three children grown and successful, the 52-year-old Davis decided last year it was time to return to baseball. He was experiencing, he said with a laugh, “a change in life.”
He talked it over with his wife, who prodded him gently by reminding him he wasn’t getting any younger.
“You’re not going to be able to run around out there pretty soon,” she told him.
Staying active with the Mariners in a variety of promotional functions had kept Davis connected with the team. The trial was due to go ahead last year, but the Town Council said in December that the habourmaster had warned the lights "could cause confusion to shipping" since some of the lights were the same colour as warning navigation buoys.
However, it emerged in January that harbourmaster John Stone had not objected to the trial, but had only said the safety of the lights would need be assessed.
Councillors at Wednesday's Town Improvements Committee meeting voted in favour of installing three coloured LED lights on the South Esplanade at a cost of 420 on a trial basis.
Town Clerk Eileen Shaw said: "Once the new lights are in place, a number of tests will be undertaken to establish whether they generate sufficient light on the pavements and highway."
Mayor Ken Smout added: "This scheme has been stalled for several months so now we have got the go-ahead from the harbourmaster, let's get this moving."

A Bay woman says a local contractor failed to finish a renovation job at her home, leaving the work open to the elements and costing her hundreds in additional damage. Rita Overturf said after realizing the lap siding on her home held in too much moisture causing the substrate to rot, it needed to be replaced or the front end of her home would collapse within six to eight months.
In late October, Overturf said she hired Thurmond Brothers Construction to do the the work. The Sullivan-based company is owned by brothers Steve and Mark Thurmond, who are also the duo behind Sullivan Insulation. She said Thurmond proceeded to make a few more sporadic visits to the home in a two-month period, cutting a hole around a tree in her deck without framing it back in, taking the threshold off her crawl space door, and leaving the deck on a jack. Overturf said Thurmond's last visit was right before Christmas and he left saying he would return on the "next good weather day." She said she has not heard from him since.
After no sign of Thurmond for almost a month, Overturf felt she had been ripped off.
"I panicked," Overturf said.
