2007年2月末に帰国した私達は、イタリア食材の輸入業を始めました。
美味しいオリーブオイル、パスタやパスタソース、オリーブやツナ、
ドライトマトの瓶詰めなど、イタリア各地の生産者から直接買い付けて

夏休み / Summer Vacation

長らくお休みしてしまって、すみませんでした。
7月中旬〜8月初旬にかけて、イタリアにおりました。

さて、イタリアに限ったことではありませんが、今は夏休みの時期ですね。
フィレンツェで暮らし始めたのが、ちょうど昨年の8月中旬だったのですが、
町中の商店が軒並み閉まっていて、不自由したのをよく覚えています。

写真は、「夏休みのため閉店」という内容の貼紙です。
フィレンツェは個人や家族経営の商店やレストランが多いので、みんな
この貼紙をして、最低2週間、長いと1ヶ月以上の夏休みをとります。

ですからこの時期、「このトラットリアで食事がしたい！」とか
「靴の修理をお願いしたい」「あのパン屋さんのパンを買いたい」などなど、
個人商店にお願いするような用事は、夏休みの日程次第で、一ヶ月程度、
がまんしなくてはいけないことがあります。

また、市内を走るバスも、この期間は運行本数が半減します。

何もかもが、一斉に夏休みモードに入るところがおもしろいですよね。



I am sorry to have been absent for such a long time.
I was in Italy from the middle of July to early August.

Now, August, is the period of the Summer vacation (not only
in Italy, naturally).
Last year, when we started our life in Florence in the middle of
August, we had a difficult life because most of the shops
in the city were closed.

The picture is of a written notice pasted on a shop, saying
“We are closed for holidays.” There are many family businesses
and restaurants in Florence and therefore they put this kind of
notice to take at least two-week-off. Some are closed for
more than one month.

So, during this holiday season, things that can be taken care of
by individual shops, such as “I want to eat at my favorite trattoria”
I want to have my shoes repaired”“I want to buy the bread at that
bakery,” may have to be put off for about a month, until shopkeepers
come back.

Also the City’s bus service is reduced during this period.

Isn’t it funny that the entire city creates an atmosphere of
the Summer vacation?

フィレンツェ魂 / Patriotic Florentine

少し前の話ですが、５月２７日は、サッカーセリエAの最終節でした。
フィレンツェは、この地元での最終戦で、大勝したそうですね。

フィレンツェのチームは、「フィオレンティーナ」です。
フィオレンティーナの試合がある時は、大勢のフィレンツェ人が応援に
駆けつけます。

フィオレンティーナのチームカラーは、紫色で、地元で試合のある日は
紫色のものを身につけている人が、とても多くなります。ユニホームは
言うに及ばず、マフラー、手袋、帽子、スニーカー、ジャンパー、はては
ピアスやライターまで。

いいんです、紫色なら、何でも！！！

ところで、フィオレンティーナが「勝つ」か「引き分け」ると、市内の
いたる所で、チーム旗がいっせいに掲揚されます。写真は、近所の民家と、
食材屋さんです。

この旗、地元での試合の時はもちろんのこと、いわゆるアウェイゲームでも
掲揚します。でも、負けると出さないんです。分かりやすいですよね（笑）。

サッカーに限らず、イタリア人は地元愛が強いです。

日本では「愛国心」などと言っただけで、物議を醸してしまいそうですが、
イタリア人達の、気軽で開放的な地元愛を、うらやましく思ったものです。

Talking about a while back, May 27 was the final season of the
Italian football league, Serie A. I heard that Florence had had a
great victory then.

The Florence's team is called "Fiorentina" in Italian.
When Fiorentina has a game, many Florentines rush to cheer them.

Fiorentina's team color is the purple. So when the local game is
scheduled, you will see many people dressed in purple. Woolen scarves,
gloves, caps, sneakers, windbreakers, not to speak of the official
uniform. Even pierced earrings or cigar lighters are kept in purpole.

Anything is OK if it was purple!

By the way, when the Fiorentina wins or draws, team flags are displayed
at many places in the city. The first picture is taken at a private
house nearby, and the second picture is of a grocery shop.

This flag is displayed always after the game (both at the local and
the away game), but will never sticked up when Fiorentina loses.
Isn't it simple?

Not only about the football, I feel that Italian people love their
local cities.

In Japan, unfortunately, the word "patriotism" is sometimes controversial.
I was impressed often by their casual and liberal patriotism.

フィレンツェの夕景 / One Evening in Florence

ミケランジェロ広場（Piazzale Michelangelo ピアッツァーレ・ミケランジェロ）
は、フィレンツェで最も有名な、絶景スポットのひとつでしょう。
高台に位置しているので、フィレンツェの街を一望の下に見渡せるのです。

手前にアルノ川、れんが色の古い街並み、ドゥオーモ（花の大聖堂）。
市街地の向こうには美しいトスカーナの丘がゆったりと広がり、時々、
教会の鐘の音が、風に乗って届きます。いつも大勢の人で賑わっている
場所なのに、とても静かです。

何度か訪れたこの広場で、私はいつもドゥオーモばかりを見ていました。
広場の正面に見えるし、ひときわ大きくそびえているクーポラ（天蓋）には、
自然と目を奪われてしまうのです。

が、この日は、広場の正面でなく、端の方で足を停めました。
夕暮れのポンテ・ヴェッキオが、静かに浮かび上がっていました。




"Piazzale Michelangelo" is, needless to say, one of the most popular
view spot with a lovely landscape in Florence. The place is located on
a hill and you can see the whole city of Florence.

Lies the River Arno, brick-colored antique town, Duomo (The Florence
Cathedral) under your eyes. Beautiful Tuscany hills stretch beyond
the city and sometimes the wind delivers the sound of church bells.
Although this place is always frequented by many people, it is very quiet.

Every time I visited there, I usually looked only at the Dome.
The Dome soars just in front of the place and my eyes rested on
its huge Cupola almost automatically.

But on that day, I've stopped at the corner of the place, instead of
the front. "Ponte Vecchio" was quietly lit up in the evening.

金髪用シャンプー？ / Shampoo for Blonds?

昨年、リンスを探してスーパーで戸惑ったというエピソードをご紹介
しましたが、今回は、シャンプーについてです。

写真は「ウルトラ・ドルチェ」というシリーズで、色がキレイなのと、
香りがよいので、買ってみることにしたのです。

「乾燥が気になる髪」「長い髪」「ダメージヘアに」などなど、何種類もの
タイプがあり、それぞれに配合されている成分が違うようでした。
その中に、「カモミールとハチミツ配合」という、金色のシャンプーがあり、
ハーブの香りがさわやかで気に入ったので、買ってきました。

が、使う段になってよく見ると、こんな表示が。
「Capelli Chiari」
明るい色の髪に、という意味ですが、つまりは「金髪用」ということです。

しまった・・・。私は「Capelli Normali（ふつうの髪用）」を買わなくては
ならなかったのに。日本では、黒髪がふつうで、髪の色については、
せいぜい「カラーリングした髪」程度のバリエーションしかありませんよね。

この時ばかりは、さまざまな髪色の方が混在する「外国」を強く意識して
しまったのでした。

黒髪の私にとっては、シャンプーはどれも同じに思えてしまいますが、
いろいろなメーカーで「金髪用」が区別して売られているのを考えると、
何か差があるのでしょうね。金髪の方、いらっしゃいましたら、コメントを
お待ちしています（笑）。

リンスって、イタリア語で何て言うの？





Last year, I wrote an episode about the day I looked for a rinse
at a supermarket. This time, I'd like to talk about a shampoo.

The picture is one of the series of shampoo named "ULTRA DOLCE."
They are colorfully displayed and they smell good. So I decided to
buy one.

In the series of ULTRA DOLCE, there are variety of shampoos,
depending on the usage and hair type; "For Dry Hair," "For Long Hair,"
"For Damaged Hair," etc., and each ingredient was different.

I found a golden color shampoo mixed with camomile and honey.
It had a fresh herbal aroma and I liked it very much.

But I've noticed its usage just before using it:
"Capelli Chiari"
In Italian, it says "for light colored hair" but you know, it was
for blonds!

Oh dear... I should have chosen "Capelli Normali (Normal Hair)" type.
In Japan, there aren't so many varieties of shampoo from the viewpoint
of the hair color, because most of the people have black hair. Maybe,
the only possibility is "dyed hair."

It was the very day that I strongly recognized that I was in foreign
country, where many people with different hair color live together.

To me, shampoo types do not make so much differences. However,
considering that many makers are selling shampoos specialized
for blonds, there should be some differences. If you have a
blond hair, I'd appreciate your comments, please! :-P

How can I say "rinse" in Italian?

水が違う / Difference of water

日本に帰国して2ヶ月が経ちました。

「水」の違いなど、あまり意識したことはありませんでしたが、日本に
戻っていちばん驚いたのは、洗濯物の洗い上がり。やわらか～い！！

イタリアの水道水は、一般に「硬水」を使っていると言われます。
日本は「軟水」。イタリアのほうが、カルシウムをはじめとする、
ミネラル分が多く含まれているのです。

そのため、洗濯機も、水と洗剤だけを使っていると、カルシウム分が付着し、
内部や水道管が詰まってしまうことがあるそうです。

そこでイタリアのスーパーでは、写真のようなものがよく売られています。
「カルシウム除去剤」とでも言うのでしょうか、洗濯する時に、洗剤と
一緒に入れると、カルシウム分を中和してくれるわけです。
パッケージには、"La lavatrice vive di piu「洗濯機が長持ちします」"と
書いてありますよ。

箱の裏側には、イタリア全土の地図が印刷されていて、県ごとに色分け
されています。水が特に硬い地域は赤く塗られていて、除去剤を多めに
入れなさい、という指示なのですが、反対に、水色の「軟水地域」が
いかに少ないか、一目瞭然ですね。






It's been two months since I came back to Japan.

I didn't pay much attention to the difference of "water," but I was
so surpirsed when I first washed my clothes in Japan. They were
done very softly!!

Generally, running water in Italy is "hard water," while in Japan is
"soft water." This means that Italian water supply contains much more
minerals, such as calcium.

Because of the hard water, it is said that inside of washing machines,
water pipes get clogged with the calcium, if you wash only with
the detergent and running water.

So, Italian supermarkets often sell something like in the pictures.
I guess it is called like the "anti-calcium." You put it with the
detergent and it neutralizes the water. On the package is written
"La lavatrice vive di piu (=The washing machine lives longer)."

On the back of the package, a whole map of Italy is printed and
every prefecture is distinguished by using different colors.
This indicates that if your place is colored in red, you need to
put more anti-calcium.
Isn't is clear how small the blue-colored "soft water" area is?

リラと出会った / A First Meeting with Lira

「リラ(Lira)」と言えば、イタリアの昔の通貨です。
1999年にユーロが導入され、2002年以降、リラは流通しなくなっています。
昨年（2006年）に渡伊した私は、当然お目にかかったことがありませんでした。

ところがある日、スーパーで、劇的（？）な初対面を果たしたのです。

イタリアのスーパーでは、ショッピングカートを使うのに、コインが必要です。
所定の場所に鎖でつないであるカートに硬貨を入れ、使用後にまた所定の
位置に戻すと、コインが返金される仕組みになっています。使用するコインは、
スーパーによって、1ユーロ玉だったり、2ユーロ玉だったりします。

その日は「エッセルンガ」というスーパーに行ったので、2ユーロ玉を
握りしめて出かけました。ちょうどカートを戻そうとしているお姉さんが
いたので、彼女に2ユーロを渡して、カートを譲ってもらったのです。
イタリアのスーパーではよくあることなので、彼女も何の疑問もなく、
カートを渡してくれました。

さて、買い物を終え、カートを戻した私は、戻ってきた硬貨の感触が
どことなくいつもと違う、と気づき、まじまじと見つめました。
すると、・・・なんとそれは2ユーロではなく、「500リラ」コインだったのです。

写真をご覧下さい。上段が、２ユーロの表と裏です。下段が、件の500リラ。
驚いたことに、両者は全く同じ大きさで、デザインもそっくりなんです。
こんなことってあるんですね・・・。イタリア国内だけで、通貨が変更に
なったのならいざ知らず、広いユーロ圏で決まったデザインが、たまたま
リラとそっくりなんて、ちょっと意外な気がします。

ちなみに、500リラを現在の価値に換算すると、40円くらいだそうです。
2ユーロは、320円程度になりますから、私はとても高い買い物をして
しまったことになりますが、ともあれ、今は流通していない、珍しいコイン。
以来、何となくお守りのように持ち歩いている私なのでした。






"Lira" is the fomer currency in Italy.
"Euro" has been introduced to the world market from the 1999 and
Lira is not circulated since the year 2002. I went to Italy
last year (2006) and, naturally, I had never seen the Lira used daily.

But one day, I had a dramatic (?) first meeting with Lira at a supermarket.

In Italian supermarkets, you need a coin to use shopping carts.
Carts are put in chains at the designated area and you have to put
a coin to release it. The coin will be returned when you put the cart away.
You use 1-Euro coin or 2-Euro coin, depending on the supermarket you go.

On that day, I went to "Esselunga" and brought a 2-Euro coin.
One young woman was about to return the cart and I asked her to give it
to me, handing my coin to her. It was quite usual to exchange carts
and coins and she left the cart without hesitating.

I did the shopping, returned the cart, and had the coin back...But I felt
something strange when I touched the coin and looked at it closely.
To my surprise, it was not a 2-Euro coin, but a "500 Lira."

Look at the pictures above. The upper two pictures are of 2-Euro
and the latter two are the 500 Lira. It may surprise you that the two
are exactly the same size and they look very similar. Isn't it funny?
I should understand the resemblance if the monetary design has been
changed only in Italy. But instead, all the countries in the Eurozone
chose to make 2-Euro this way, very much like 500 Italian Lira!

By the way, if I convert 500 Lira into Japanese Yen today, the rate of
exchange would be about 40 yen. While 2-Euro is about 320 yen,
I should admit that I bought 500 Lira too expensively.
However, Lira is not circulated anymore and thus is rare. From that
day on, I am taking the 500 Lira coin always with me, like a charm of luck.

ソーセージ２ / Ｉｔａｌｉａｎ Sausage 2

先日話題に挙げましたサルシッチャ（ソーセージ）ですが、大手スーパーの
売り場では、ちょっとおもしろい文句とともに売られています。

「この棚の商品（＝サルシッチャ）は、冷蔵庫で保存し、火を通してから
　お召し上がりください（エッセ・ルンガ）」
「あなたの健康のために：サルシッチャは火を通して食べましょう（コープ）」

そう、伝統的に生肉を食べる習慣のあるトスカーナの人々は、今でも「生」で
サルシッチャを食べることがあるのだそうです。トスカーナ人に嫁いだ知人が、
親戚（当然全員トスカーナ人）の集まりで生サルシッチャを出され、断るに
断れず食べたのだとか。けっこう美味しかった・・・と・・・（笑）。

北イタリアのピエモンテ州にも、生でいただくソーセージがあるのだそう
ですが、あくまで「牛肉」を使ったものです。

サルシッチャは「豚肉」ですから！！

・・・「強者」はさておき、サルシッチャは、やはり火を通して食べましょうね。

次回はサルシッチャを使った、トマトパスタをご紹介します。

ところで、「サルシッチャ」って何のこと？

Speaking of Salsiccia (Italian sausages) which I wrote about
the other day, I've found them sold at major supermarkets with
interesting cautions:

"Products in this showcase (=salsiccia) should have to be kept
in the refrigerator and consumed after cooked. (at ESSELUNGA)"
"We are concered about your health: Salsicce should have to be
consumed after cooked. (at COOP)"

Yes, in Tuscany (Toscana), where people used to have raw meat
traditionally, salsiccia are served without heated even today.
A friend of ours, who has married a Tuscany man, has successfully (?)
experienced to have raw salsiccia when her hasband's relatives are
gathered (of course all of them were Tuscan people). Naturally,
she couldn't decline the offer of raw salsiccia and has tried some.
According to her, "Actually, it was tasty."...(^^;)

You know, there exsist some sausages eaten raw in Piemonte,
north Italy, but I should point out that it is made of beef.

Salsiccia is made of pork meat, instead!!

...Anyway, let's forget about these "masters of salsiccia" and
try to enjoy salsiccia heated, OK?

with Salsiccia.

リンスはどこ？ / Looking for a Rinse

リンスがなくなったので買うことにしました。スーパーへ行けば簡単に見つかる
だろうと思ったのですが・・・ないんです。「リンス」「ヘアコンディショナー」
「トリートメント」など、いずれかの英語表記が入っているものと思い、
うかつにもイタリア語の辞書を持って行かなかったのですが、間違いでした。

「シャンプー」は簡単に見つかりました。近くの棚で、ボディソープも見つかり
ました。でもどうしてもリンスらしいものがない。途方に暮れていると、偶然
店員さんが通りかかったので、英語で質問してみました。

私　　 　 ：　　シャンプーの後に使うものを探してるんですが・・・
店員さん：　　？？？
私　　 　 ：　　髪を洗った後に使って、なめらかに仕上げるもの・・・
店員さん：　　ああ！バルサモ、ね。

バルサモって言うんですか。「気付け薬」というような意味しか知らなかったので、
全然目に止まりませんでした。改めてシャンプーの棚を見てみると、確かにありました。
シャンプーに比べてかなり種類も数も少ないようですが（あまり使わないのでしょうか）、
無名ブランドのリンスでもけっこう効き目が強く、私は気に入って使っています。



I went to a supermarket to buy some rinse the other day. I thought it would
not be so difficult to find them without using my Italian dictionary because
rinse might be placed near shampoos with some English expressions like
"Rinse," "Treatment," "Hair Conditioner," etc... But I was wrong.

"Shampoo"s were easily found and so were body soaps. But, where are
the rinse?? I stood there for a while completely puzzled until a clerk
passed by to help me in English.

I　　　:　Excuse me, I am looking for something to use after shampoo...
Clerk:　???
I　　　:　Ones you use after washing your hair, to make them smooth...
Clerk:　Ah, that's a BALSAMO!

"Balsamo." That's the name! I knew this word only as something like
"restorative" and did not recognize them as rinse. Yes, now I can see
them sold with shampoos! There weren't so many kinds and numbers of
rinse (maybe Italian people do not use it often?), but anyway, they worked
well and I found them satisfactory even ones of unknown brands.

肉切りナイフ / Steak knives

近所の台所用品店で、肉切りナイフを買ってきました。
フィレンツェは、内陸に位置する海を持たない県で、肉・内臓料理、もしくは
豆料理が中心です。スーパーに行くと、魚コーナーはいちおうありますが非常に
小さくて、日本で言えば、たとえば輸入もののチーズのコーナーくらいの狭さ、
と言えばご想像いただけるでしょうか。

我が家でも肉をよく買いますが、塊の肉を美味しくいただくには、やはり専用の
テーブルナイフがほしいと探していたところだったのです。

このナイフ、かの有名なLaguiole（ライヨール）とのことで、本物かどうかは
疑わしいですが、切れ味が抜群でとても使いやすいです。またナイフの背に、
ライヨールのシンボルであるミツバチが彫ってあるんですが（私は最初、セミ
だとばかり思っていました・・・）、これがとぼけた顔をしていて気に入って
いるんです。

We bought a couple of steak knives at a nearest kitchenware shop.
Firenze is located inland of Italy and is not faced to the sea.
Therefore, their speciality are meat (including the plucks), and beans.
In supermarket you can find fish although is very limited, just like
small racks for imported cheese in Japan.

We also buy a chunk of meat often and found it preferrable to have
sharp table knives at home.

These knives are of Laguiole, the world famous cutlery factory (well,
it is doubtful whether they are genuin), but anyway they are very sharp
and useful. You see a bee, the symbol of Laguiole, carved on the back
of knives (I thought it was a cicada...) and I like it's funny face.

便利な車！ / What a convenient car!

フィレンツェは旧市街を温存しているので、馬車が主な交通手段だった頃と
同じ道が、今でも現役で使われています。そのため、狭く入り組んだ道が多く、
駐車スペースなどは非常に限られています。この町ではバスの便が比較的
発達しているので、市内の観光にはレンタカーでなく、バスを利用するほうが
いいかもしれません。

このような駐車場事情の悪い町で、大活躍するのが小型の乗用車です。
特によく見かけるのは、Smart（スマート）という小型車。日本でも走っている
のを見かけますよね。２人乗りと４人乗りがありますが、私が注目したのは、
全長がとても短い、２人乗りの小さいほうです。詳しくはこちら↓

このスマートちゃん、フィレンツェで大人気で、あちこちで爆走しています。
でも真価を発揮するのはやはり、縦列駐車。写真は必殺の「横向き停め」。
ふつうに縦列駐車している車の間に、何と横向きに停めています。でも短い
ので、通行の妨げにはならないわけなんですね。もちろん、日本でやったら
叱られます（笑）。



In Florence, since the historical town is preserved over centuries,
streets, on which horse-drawn carriages used to run, are still active.
Thus in this city, narrow streets intersect irregularly and parking
spaces are very limited. Since buses function well in this city,
I think it is more convenient to go sightseeing by buses rather than
rent-a-cars.

In the circumstances, small cars are very useful. Especially, I see
the car called "Smart" often in this city. You may have seen them in
Japan, too. There are two types, ones for two people and others for
four people, and I would like to talk about the smaller and shorter ones,

"Smart" seem to be very popular in Florence and are often seen running
vigorously around the city. But of course they exhibit their values
the most at the time of parking. Look at the picture, which is of their
speciality, "parking sideways." You see the Smart parks in profile
while others park in column. As is short, it doesn't interfere traffics.
Well, of course in Japan is not allowed! :-P
