アルベロベッロから西へ走ること約５０キロ、ごつごつと岩がちな風景が
続き、景色はさらに乾いてきます。丘の上にマテーラの町が見えてきました。
マテーラは「洞窟住居」が世界遺産に指定されていますね。不勉強な私は、
「洞窟」という言葉から、薄暗くて貧しく、どこか不気味な町を想像して
訪れました。実際、一時は「イタリアで最も貧しい」と言われる町のひとつ
だったのだそうです。
ところがひとたび町に入ると、乾いた景色はどこへやら、緑が多く、人々は
活気にあふれ、目抜き通りには一流ブランド店のショウ・ウインドウが並び、
豊かで裕福な町ではありませんか。一般に南イタリアは貧しいと言われ
ますが、マテーラは例外のようです。
「サッシ（＝石）住居」の案内に従って中心街へ行くと、そこには確かに
洞窟住居だったと思われる旧市街がそのまま残されていました。ただし、
中心街からの角度だと、白い石造りの、古くて美しい街並みが見てとれる
ものの、洞窟の面影はほとんどありません。旧市街の中は自由に散策
できるようになっていて、夜景も幻想的できれいでした（上の写真）。
貧しいマテーラはすっかり姿を消したかのようです。
ところが翌朝、出発前に偶然寄った別の展望台からは、サッシが別の角度
から見えました（下の写真）。手が入っていない裏町や古い教会、遠くに
かすんで見える無数の洞窟、これこそ、まさにマテーラの原点なのでは
ないかと思いました。

Driving about 50Km to the West from Alberobello, the landscape
became drier and stony. There appeared the city of Matera
on a plateau.
This city is famous for their "Sassi (=stones) di Matera",
the World Heritage. As I visited Matera without studying about
them much, I had a negative image from the words, "caverns,"
and therefore expected a kind of dark, poor, and gloomy town.
Actually, Matera used to be recognized as one of the poorest area
in Italy.
However, right after entering the city, the rough landscape was
gone behind. The city was rich with green, people are walking
vibrantly on the avenue, where many world-famous boutiques
are lining! Matera absolutely was a wealthy city. Although
regions in South Italy are generally considered to be poorer
than North Italy, Matera must be an exception!
Following the sign of "Sassi" we arrived at the center of the city,
where the ancient town is preserved. From there, the ancient town
looked beautiful with white stones, but the town did not really
remain the appearance of caverns. The ancient town is opened for
visitors and we were able to take a walk. As you see in the
first picture, the night view also was fantastic.
I felt as if the poor Matera no more exsists.
The next morning, however, we dropped in a different observatory
point, from where we could view the other side of sassi (the second
picture). Many old dwellings and churches were left without being
repaired, hundreds of caves were seen vaguely faraway - To me this
rocky landscape seemed like the origin of Matera.
