　　　午後の英語教室。The Cardが終了した。
　　　4/27から、O.HENRYのＮew Yorkers.Short Stories.に入った。

　　　Stage2(700headwords)とある。
　　　先のThe CardはStage3(1000headword)であった。

　　　先生はStage2にするのを嫌がったけれど、私たちは「もっとやさしいのを。」と願った。

　　　５つの短編からなる。
　　　1) The Christmas Presents

　　　この物語は児童書で読んでいた話であった。
　　　この教科書も原書ではないらしい。

　　　貧しく若い夫婦が、クリスマスプレゼントにお互いが一番大事にしていた物をプレゼント
　　　すると言う内容。
　　　妻は夫に自分の金髪を切って、夫の大事な時計の鎖を買う。
　　　夫は妻に祖父、父と受け継いだ金時計を売って、妻の美しい髪のために簪を買う。

　　　まだ２ページのみ進んだのだが・・・

　　　stage3と2の違いは左程感じない。
　　　headwordsの数の違いなら、私のlevelでは何ら変わらない。笑

　　　この本の序文(preface)を先生が訳してくださった。

　　　『１００年前のニューヨークに住んでいた人たちと今の人たちと違うのだろうか。
　　　建物は新しくなり、馬車は車やバスに変わり、流行は変化する。
　　　だが、人々は変わらない。

　　　浮浪者の望みは弁護士の望みと同じように大切だし、ウェイトレスの恋も女優の
　　　それと同じようにワクワクする。
　　　人々の望み、恐れ、夢といったものは年を経ても何も変わりはしない。』中略・抜粋

Are New Yorkers different now from a hundred years ago?
Cities grow bigger with the years, new buildings are put up and old
buildings are pulled down, horses are replaced by cars and buses,
fashions change.
But peopl do not change.

The New Yorkers in these stories are very different from each other,
but the hopes of a tramp are as important as the hopes of a lawyer;
the love of a waitress is as exciting as the love of an actress.
And we see that people's hopes and fears and dreams do not change with
