Moving #2

ここ２週間ほど引越しの関係で仕事がはかどらなかったので休日出勤してますが、そのオフィスからブログをアップデートしてます（休日出勤の意味が無い）。

新居は今の家から車で１０分程度とあまり離れていないので、今回は引越し業者に家具や、大きな荷物などだけお願いして、ミニカーコレクションやキットなど壊れてほしくないものは自分で運ぶことにしました。工具や作業環境もまだ以前の家の置いてあるし、家のほかのものが落ち着かないうちにチマチマやってると奥さんに大目玉を食らうので、模型製作再開までもうしばらくかかりそうです。

ところで写真に家の売り出し中の看板が出てますが、これはお隣さんのです。私の家の区画には７軒家がありますが、そのうち３軒が売りにでています。これで我が家が売り出しになったら７軒中４軒売り出しという異常事態に。偶然売り出し時期が重なっただけで、特に問題があるというわけではないのですが、物件を探している人は不審に思うかも知れませんね。

I've been busy with preparation of moving last couple of weeks and I'm behind my work schedule. So I came in to my office in the weekend to make up the delay (then updating this blog :).

The new house is 10 minutes drive from the old house, so I decided to move my stuff (miniature models, kits) by myself, leaving furnitures and heavy stuff to the mover. The tools, paints and other model building stuff are still left in my old house. It'll be a while before I can start building models again, since I need to get everything settled (so my marriage is saved).

There's a sign of house for sale in the picture. It's for one of my neighbor. Currently three houses out of seven are on market in our development. It'll be four out of seven once my house is ready for sale. This is just a coincidence and there's nothing wrong with the community. But this situation may make some potential buyers suspect.

Moving

本サイトの方で以前に書きましたが、引越ししました。まだ電話もつながっていない状態なので、模型再開までしばらく時間がかかりそうです。来週電話がつながったらブログだけでもアップデートしようと思います。

As I wrote in my site we've moved to new house. The phone line isn't still connected and it can be a while till I can start building model again. I'll update this blog next week when the phone line is available.

先週金曜日はかなり暖かく、今シーズン初のオープンでインターメカニカを走らせました。晴天の下のドライブは気持ちがいいねー、なんて思ってたら花粉症だったのをすっかり忘れてて、帰ってきたらひどい鼻水で散々でした。

写真は近所のアジア系のスーパー、宇和島屋ベルビュー店の駐車場でとりました。

Last Friday it was so warm that I took first drive in this year with top down. It was pleasant drive until my pollen allergy start to makes me miserable. I need wait few more weeks before I can really enjoy driving my Intermeccanica.

Snowy Seattle

今年は雪の当たり年なのか、例年に比べてやけに雪が多いです。今回は雪の降った次の日が珍しく晴れたので、綺麗な雪景色が楽しめました。写真は Marymoor Park で撮ったものです。私のところは湖が近くにあるためか、それほど雪が積もりませんでしたが、山の上の方では綺麗な雪景色とかのんきなことは言ってられないかもしれません。

We have unusually lots of snow this year in Seattle. This time we had clear sunny day after snow fall, so we could enjoy beautiful scenery. The picture was taken at Marymoor park. The area I live doesn't have much snow possibly due to nearby lake. For the people who live in more snowy area snow is likely more serious problem than something to enjoy.

Seattle blackout

先週月曜の夜に旅行から帰ってきましたが、家に着くと辺り一帯が真っ暗。あー、また停電だ。たまたま立ち寄ってくれた友人の話によると、木曜日の夜の嵐でシアトルの各所で停電しているとのこと。確かに出発したときには激しい雨と強い風が吹いてたし、バンクーバーにあるインターネットプロバイダーが嵐による停電のために、ウィスラーでインターネットが使えなくなってました。ですが、シアトルまで停電になっているとは気がつきませんでした。家の中は暖房が効いてないので外と同じ寒さです（多分５℃くらい）。車でちょっと走ると電気が通っている地域もあるので、夕食を外食で済ませた後、家族全員厚着をして寝ました。

翌朝になっても電気が復旧しません。寒くてたまらないので、停電していない友人宅へ避難しました。本来なら子供が託児所に行く日なので、一日余分に仕事の休みをとって珍しく一日模型に費やせると思っていたのですが、託児所も停電で閉まってしまいすっかりあてが外れました。その日も一日停電したままで、次の日（水曜日）の午後にようやく復旧しました。

ニュースによれば、シアトルでは今までで一番大規模な停電だったようです。私もシアトルに１０年以上住んでいますが、大抵の停電は一日以内に復旧してました。旅行に出かけてたので、実際に停電を経験したのは二泊三日だけだったのは不幸中の幸いでした。今回の停電だけでも相当大変でしたが、もっと大規模な災害になったら友人の家に避難することもできません。日ごろからもっと準備をしておかなければならないなと思いました。

We came back from the trip last Monday and found the area around my house was out of power. According to one of our friends who dropped by, a big storm struck Seattle in Thursday night and many areas have been having power outage since then. I remember we had heavy rain and gusty wind in the evening we left, and internet access wasn't available in Whistler due to power outage at the internet provider in Vancouver. But I had no idea Seattle was in such mess. The inside of our house was cold, somewhere between high 30s and low 40s, since the furnace wasn't working. We went out for dinner then stayed at home that night wearing lots of clothes.

The power still didn't come back next morning. We didn't want to stay in cold house any longer, so we moved to our friend's house. Our kids usually go to day care that day, but they were closed due to power outage. I was going to take day off to do some errands (mostly model building), so my plan was screwed up. Finally the power was back next day (Wednesday) in the afternoon.

According to news it was the worst blackout in Seattle area. I've been living in Seattle for more than 10 years, but all power outages I had last less than one day. We were rather lucky that we were away from Seattle for major part of blackout period. This power outage makes me to think about preparing for larger disaster.

Snowed in

シアトルに初雪が降りました。このあたりは年に１-２回程度しか降らないのですが、降ると路面凍結やら停電やらで大騒ぎになります。

一昨日雪が降っているときには、道路が大渋滞で通常２０分のところが一時間以上かかって帰宅しました。私なんかはましなほうで、私のボスは３時間以上かかったそうです。

一夜明けて会社に行ってみると、ほとんど誰もきてませんでした。家から会社まではほとんど雪が残ってませんでしたが、もっと北の方や、ちょっと小高い丘の上などは道路が凍結して危険な状態みたいです。子供たちを預けてる託児所も、何人か先生が出勤できなくて、通常よりも早く閉まってしまいました。

We had the first snow in this season in Seattle. We have only few snow falls each year, but we have problem such as traffic accidents or power outage whenever snow falls.

The day before yesterday while snow was falling, it took me more than one hour to go home where it normally takes 20 minutes because of heavy traffic jam. My boss had to spend three hours in his car before he could go home.

When I went to work next morning, only few people were at work. Most people took day off due to dangerous road conditions. Some teachers couldn't come to work at the day care my kids go, so they closed much earlier than normal hours.

Fall

シアトルもすっかり秋になりまして紅葉（というか黄色）がきれいになりました。残念なのはこの時期はすでに雨季になってしまっていて、紅葉を楽しむような天気にはなかなか恵まれません。写真は私が通勤に使ってる West Lake Sammamish Parkway での一枚です。

The fall is in full swing in Seattle and the colors of trees are gorgeous. Too bad he are already in rainy season, so we can't enjoy the beautiful scenary in sunny days. The picture was taken on West Lake Sammamish Parkway which I use to commute.

Classic Car?

お父さんはずいぶんたくさんのミニカーを持ってるのに、息子はまだひとつも持ってません。４３は１４ヶ月の彼にはまだちょっと早いし、たいていのモデルは走ってくれないので、久しぶりに行ったダイソーで目に留まったミニカーを買ってきました。

世界の名車と銘打ってあるシリーズで、メルセデスSLやダッジバイパーとかありますが、なぜか２０ｔダンプカーとかブラッドレー（装甲車）とか、これは名車とは違うだろ？というものもラインナップされてます。

遊び道具としてよさそうなダンプカーを買ってきましたが、よく見ると対象年齢３歳以上。確かにまだ見境なくいろんなものを口に入れる年齢では、タイヤとか取れたら飲み込む事故とか起こりそうですからね。

My son doesn't have any toy car while his father has a bunch. 1/43 models are bit too advanced for 14 month old and they don't run anyway, so I bought a toy car at Daiso, Japanese dollar shop.

The package says "world classic cars" and there are models of cars such as Mercedes SL or Dodge Viper. There are also models of 20t dump truck or Bradley, an Armored Fighting Vehicle, which don't seem qualified as classic car :)

I chose the dump truck. But I noticed these toy cars are for 3 years old or older. It makes sense as my son puts anything in his mouth, so he may swallow any small parts.

Blackberry

そろそろブラックベリーの季節になってきました。このあたりではブラックベリーはそこら中に生えてます。夏の終わりが旬で、この時期になると非常に甘い実をつけます。こんなのがただで手に入るなんてー、って毎年摘んでは食べてます。これが毎年何百万個と摘まれずに地面に落ちて土に返ってるかと思うと、なんともったいない話でしょうか。

ところでこの植物、非常に繁殖力が強く、ほったらかしておくとあっという間に大きな茂みを作ります。かなり強烈なトゲがあるので、間違えて茂みに落ちようものならテッカマンの苦しみをあじわうことになります（一度落ちたことあり）。自分の庭には欲しくない植物ですね。

It's about the time of blackberry season. Around this area you can find blackberry shrub everywhere. At its peak around this time of the year, it yields very sweet fruit. Every year I pick a bowlful of blackberries and enjoy them. It's too bad that millions of blackberries are wasted each year.

Only the problem of this plant is that it has thorns and grows quickly into a large bush. One of the plants you probably don't want in your yard.

Pinata

先週末に子供の誕生日パーティをやりまして、妻がピニャータを買ってきました。ピニャータっていうのはメキシコのお祭りとか誕生日で使われるもので、中にお菓子を詰めたクス玉みたいなものをつるして、目隠しした子供たちが棒でたたいて割って遊ぶというものです。すいか割りに似てますね。私も実際に使ってみるのは初めてでした。

で試してみて、２つ問題がありました。
１．棒にピニャータをつるして大人が両側から支えてたのですが、３歳の子供には棒を思ったところに振るのが難しく、両脇の大人がたたかれてました。
２．買ってきたピニャータが防弾仕様か？というくらい頑丈で、最後には写真の大男が全力で何回もたたいてようやく割れました。

まだまだ子供らは小さいので、楽しんでいたのはどちらかというと大人たちのほうでした。

We had a birthday party for our children last weekend and my wife bought a piñata for it. Piñata is used in occasions such as holidays or birthday in Mexico. It's filled with candies or toys and blindfolded children hits hanged Piñata with stick to break it. It's similar to Suika-wari (Cracking watermelon) in Japan. This is first time we ever tried it.

Then we found two problems.
1. We hanged the Piñata from a bar with two adults holding both ends. It's difficult for 3 years old kids to control their sticks, and the adults got some slashes from the kids.
2. The Piñata we bought was very hard to break. It took several good slashes from the big guy in the picture before it broke. I guess we bought bullet-proof version of Piñata.

The kids seem too young to get the idea of playing Piñata, though they enjoyed the sweets and toys.
