先週金曜日にインターメカニカ(以下 IM)でのBBQ パーティに行ってきました。あいにくの空模様でしたが、十数台の IM が集合しました。写真はこちら。
今回は４月にお邪魔した IM 東京の代表、池亀さんとカリフォルニア在住のオーナー、渡辺さんも参加されました。渡辺さんとはロードスター購入の際に電話でお話して以来ご無沙汰してまして、４年目に初めてお会いすることができました。渡辺さんは ロードスターのほかにも58年式のビートルをもってらっしゃいます。渡辺さんのブログでもこのイベントのことが紹介されてます。
前回 IM 東京にお邪魔したときに購入しておいた、凸面のサイドミラーを持っていきました。装着の仕方は教わっていたのですが、力をかけすぎるとミラーが割れると聞いていたので、慣れている池亀さんに作業をお願いしました。標準装備の平面鏡では、助手席側のミラーの見える範囲が狭くてほとんど役に立たないのですが、これでだいぶ改善されました。ほかのオーナーにも好評でした。
IM では現代版 Italia の開発を進めていますが、お客さんの車の生産で忙しく、４ヶ月前に来たときから特に進展はありませんでした。現在は水冷エンジンバージョンの開発のほうが重要度が高いようです。インターメカニカでメカニックとして働いている斉藤さんにお話を聞いたところ、以下のような変更点が入るそうです。
- エンジンはゴルフの１．８Ｌ（形式は不明）
- ラジエータのスペースを確保するために、フロントサスはビートルから９１４のものに変更。
- エンジン重量が重くなるので、リアのサブフレームにエンジンを載せるサポートを追加。
ＢＢＱ のあとはフェリーに乗ってビクトリア・アイランドへ、土曜日は景色の楽しみながらをツーリング、日曜日はビクトリア在住のオーナーの家で ＢＢＱ パーティと３日間の豪華な予定です。残念ながら私は金曜日だけの参加でしたが、楽しいイベントでした。

This was the third BBQ party at IM. This time, Mr. Ikegame who's the president of Intermeccanica Tokyo and Mr. Watanabe who lives in south California joined. I talked with Mr. Watanabe only once when I was about to buy my Roadster, so finally we met in person after four years. He has a Roadster and 58 Beetle. You can see some other pictures of this event in his blog.
I brought in convex door mirrors which I bought from Mr. Ikegame when I visited IM Tokyo last April. I learned how to install them from him, but also he told me they can break if too much pressure is applied. I wasn't sure it I can do it safely, so I asked him to install them. The passenger side mirror was almost useless with flat mirror, now it works much better with the convex mirror. Other owners are also very interested in them.
At IM they've been developing modern version of Italia. But they are busy with production of customer cars these days and there wasn't much progress on Italia since I visited them four months ago. At this point, the development of 356 replica with water-cooled engine takes higher priority. According to Mr. Saito who works for IM, the followings are the major modifications.
- The engine is from VW Golf 1.8L
- Front suspension of Porsche 914 is used instead of Beetle to claim some space for radiator.
- Rear subframe will have additional support on which the engine rests.
Unfortunately I could only join the BBQ party on Friday. After the party, they headed to Vancouver Island. Then on Saturday they enjoyed scenic drive and Sunday they had BBQ / pool party at the house of an IM owner in Victoria. It must have been great weekends!
