The Dreamy Taste of Coffee

2009-02-11 | ■札幌グランドホテル前校

Hello. My name is Mark and I’m from Vancouver.

City Vancouver is a wonderful city and  noted as the most livable city in the world. 0ne thing that people will notice right away is all the coffee shops. When you walk in the downtown area there are coffee shops everywhere. Practically every block has at least one coffee shop. The most predominant coffee shop would be Starbucks. At the most crowded intersections, there are sometimes even two Starbucks. Many of these coffee shops (not only Starbucks) have chairs and tables out front, so on a hot day you can sit and watch people walk by.

I love to drink coffee. The warm taste of it “perks” me up in the morning. Whenever I have time on my breaks, I often go to coffee shops in the downtown area of Sapporo.

What makes coffee shops in Japan unique are the different settings. I have been to many jazz-kissatens. Basically, these coffee shops have dimmed lights and overpriced speakers that blast jazz music so loud that you would have to scream if you wanted to the person next to you. I’ve heard of maid-cafés where friendly young ladies dressed in maid costumes take your orders. I’ve even heard that there are classical music cafés where people sit in silence and listen. I wonder what other kinds of coffee shops exist in Japan

I like how all the workers repeat in unison the orders that are taken. Nuances like this put me in awe as I can realize how harmonious Japanese people are when they work as a team.

I think I need to get a coffee now. Bye!
