溶岩洞穴

４月9日(月)快晴

富士山にも小さな洞穴がありますが、地質の古い豪州には巨大な洞穴や鍾乳洞が数多く残されています。今回の旅行の主なテーマは豪州東北部の火山と温泉の調査。ユミが調査隊長で僕が食料調達係の、総員2名。クレーターを歩き、鍾乳洞2箇所と溶岩洞穴3箇所を見学しましたが、日本と違って観光よりも自然保護優先。人工照明や舗装道路はありません。毎回1時間以上狭くて滑りやすい洞窟を登ったり、降りたり。歩き疲れた時に、突然コウモリや蝶の大群が現れるとほっとします。

Lava tube
Mon. April 9 : fine

There are small lava tubes near Mt. Fuji. There are a lot more huge ones and caves in Australia. The main theme of our trip this time is to research volcanoes and hot springs in north-east area of Australia. The member of this research team is two; captain Yumi and food procuring person, me. We walked on the craters of volcanoes and visited 2 caves and 3 lava tubes. As it is different from Japan that nature reservation is prior to sightseeing in Australia, there are no lights or pavements in the caves or tubes. We had to go up and down narrow and slippery slopes. When we were tired suddenly swarm of bats or butterflies appeared and we felt relieved at the sight.
