12月31日(日)快晴

年末年始が真夏の豪州では日本の師走のようなあわただしさは全くありません。クリスマスも元旦もビーチでのんびり過ごすのが豪州流。それでもシドニーでは世界随一のカウント・ダウンを見物しようと、50万人の花火見物客の場所取り合戦が繰り広げられます。一方ケアンズの花火は9：00ｐｍと12：00ｐｍの各10分間だけ。500ｍの長さの海辺の公園で市民も観光客も芝生に寝転んでの花火見物。公園の特設舞台から音楽が流れてきますが、舞台袖で踊っているのは10歳以下の子供たちでした。

New Year's Eve in Cairns

New Year's Eve is not so busy in Australia as it is in Japan. Relaxing on the beach on Christmas and New Year's Day is typical Australian style. However, in Sydney 5000 people rush to the battle of getting nice spot to watch the worldwide foremost count down fireworks. On the other hand the fireworks in Cairns are launched twice at 9: 00pm and 12:00 and they last only for 10 minutes. Citizens and tourists lying down on the lawn of 500km length seashore park to watch the fireworks. Music flows on the specially installed stage in the park, but those who dance at the stage wings were children of 10 years old or less.

ユミは優秀なドライバーなので長距離の車の旅も平気です。2人で1時間交代に運転し、夕方にはモテルを捜します。8日間のドライブで4000ｋｍを走破。最終日の今日はケアンズの南200ｋｍのミッション・ビーチに寄り道。天の使いなのか、上空から4組のスカイ・ダイバーが降り立って来ました。

As Yumi is an excellent driver, she never mind driving long distance. We drive turn by turn every hour, and look for the motel in the evening. We drove 4000km in 8 days. Today, the last day of our travel, we dropped in Mission Beach locating 200km away from Cairns to south. 4 groups of sky divers flew off the ground from the sky. Were they messengers from heaven?

沖縄の珊瑚礁は乱開発、白化現象、オニヒトデなどの自然災害や人災で壊滅状態ですが、グレート・バリア・リーフの海は回復しつつあるようです。ウイット・サンデー島では1000種の魚を見ることができます。僕はナポレオン・フィッシュもニモも見ました。しかしユミは船酔いが回復しないので船室で寝ていました。

The condition of Coral reaf in Okinawa has been ruined by natural disasters and randam development such as milkiness phenomenon, crown-of-thorns starfish or other man-made disasters. The same phenomenon in Great Barrier Reef, by the other hand, has been recovering. We can look at more than 1000 kinds of fish in Witsunday island. I saw Napoleonic fish and Nimo. Having seasickness Yumi lay down in the cabin.

1770年シドニー郊外のボタニー湾にたどり着いたキャプテン・クックは豪州東海岸を北上。水や燃料を補給するために立ち寄ったビーチにかなり適当な名前を残します。例えばケアンズは三位一体の主日に到着したので、「トリニティー湾」と命名します。世界中に美しいビーチは数々ありますが、グレイト・バリア・リーフは別格です。聖霊降臨島という野暮な名前も「シリカ・アイランド(石英島)」のほうが良かったのでは？

Whitsunday Island

Captain cook who arrived in Sydney suburbal Botany Bay in 1770 sailed to north along the Australian east coast. His party remained so many randaom names to the beach where they stopped in order to replenish water and wood of fuel. For example they arrived at Cairns on the main day of triune, it was designates as “Trinity Beach”. There are lots of beautiful beaches in the world, but Great Barrier Reaf is exceptional. Whitsunday Island, uncouth name, means saintly spirit descendingisland . Doesn't "Silica Island" sound a bit better??

豪州ではボクシング・デーの翌日は年間最大の割引セールが行われます。ほとんどの店が5割引とあって、ブリスベンの繁華街のクイーン・ストリートは大変な人出。僕たちは買い物には興味はありません。ショウ・ボートで食事をしようとしたら、本日も休業。写真後方に見える旧式の橋はストーリー・ブリッジ。

On the next day from boxing day there is an annual largest discout sale in Australia. Most stores have 50% discaounts, so Queen Street, the busiest business district in Brisbane is unusually full of people. Not being interested in shopping, we tried having nice lunch on the show boat. Unfortunatelly, they were all closed for today. In the background of the photo you can see Story Bridge, the famous old style one.

ブリスベンは人口200万人、ＱＬＤの州都。ＱＬＤで人口の多い都市の順序は、①ブリスベン、②ゴールド・コースト、③タウンズ・ビル、④ロック・ハンプトン、⑤ケアンズ、かな？12月26日は「ボクシング・デー」という国民の祝日。「拳闘の日」ではなく、クリスマス・プレゼントを開ける日なのです。祝日なので、ブリスベン中の店は休業。半年振りに再会したジミー夫妻と、やっと見つけたタイ・レストランで夕食。

The population of the ptovincial capital of QLD, Bristbane is 2,000,000. If I put the number of population in QLD in order from the top, that will ①～⑤, I think. Today, December 26 is a national holiday called boxing day. IT is not the day for fist fighting but the day people open their presents they've kept under the tree. As it is a national holiday, all stores are closed. We met Jimmy and Yoon after half a year and sat around the table in the Thai restaurant we finally found.

クリスマスはコブ牛の街・ロック・ハンプトンで迎えました。人口30万人で、ＱＬＤ州の第４の都市ですが、街中の店が閉まっています。街外れにモテルはありますが、食事にありつけません。中心街にやっと見つけたホテルは由緒正しい市民の社交場。1泊12,000円。バーやレストランも併設されているので、コブ牛のステーキも食べました。

Rock Hampton

We celebrated our Christmas in Rock Hampton known as a supplying area of hump bull. With its 300,000 population, it is the 4th biggest city in QLD state and all the stores and the facilities are closed in the entire city. There are a few motels in the outskirts of the city but you can eat hardly anything here. At last we found a hotel in the centre of the city, rich in legend as the sociable place to the citizen. The hotel charge was 12,000 in Yen per night. There were the bar and the restaurant at the hotel, so we enjoyed the hump bull stake.

昨夜はホース・シュー・ベイというリゾート地に宿泊。クリスマス価格で1泊16,000円。白砂の馬蹄形の入江を囲むように岩山や森林が連なり、変化に富む海岸です。そして、ここでヌード・ビーチを発見。ＱＬＤ（クイーンズ・ランド）州は保守的なので裸浜はないと聞いていましたが、浜辺に数人の裸族を確認。絶滅の危機から保護したいものです。

nude beach on Queen's Land

We stayed at the resort beach called Horseshoe Bay last night. It cost us 16,000 in yen for special Christmas charge.The seaside here abounds in variations. The horseshoe shaped inlet in white sand is surrounded by the rocky mountain and the forests. We discovered the nude beach here. As we heard QLD (state of Queen's Land) is so conservative that no nude beaches exist, however, we saw several people in naked at the beach. I hope we can protect nude beaches from its extermination crisis.

まだ引越し荷物の片付けも済んでいないのですが、今日から車でゴールド・コーストに出かけます。つまり砂金浜から金浜に行くのです。片道2000kmの行程です。イブには金浜に到着できるでしょうか？25日にはシドニーの友人のジミー夫妻とブリスベンで落ち合う約束です。

Gold Coast

We have not yet completed unpacking since moving here. Before finishing it we are driving to Gold Coast today, from Golden Sand Beach to Gold Beach. In other words it is to go to the Gold Beach from the alluvial gold beach. The distance is about 2000km. It is possible to arrive in Gold Coast on Christmas Eve? In Brisbane we are meeting good friends of mine from Sydney, Jimmy and Yoon on the 25th.

Of course ther is an aqualium in Cairns. We can see various kinds of colorful tropical fish that inhabit in Great Bariier Reef. By the way the main bedroom of our unit has the glass wall. I can observe my partner bathing through the wall from my bed.

鳥の楽園

キュランダにはバード・サンクチュアリもあります。熱帯雨林に生息する色々の鳥のほかに、外国の鳥も飼われています。よそ者が多いせいか、豪州の野生種に比べると無愛想。ケアンズは田舎のせいかよそ者にも親切です。シドニーを離れて半年になろうとしています。シドニーも良い所でしたが、僕たちはやっぱり田舎が向いているようです。

There is a bird sancutuary in Kuranda. Not only vaious birds that inhabit the tropical rain forest but also the birds from the forign conturies are raised here. Comparing to native Australian species these strangers are pretty unsociable. As Cairns is in contryside, local people are kind to strangers. It has been nearly half a year since we left Sydney. Sydney is a nice place to live but we just feel more comfortable living in the country.

昨日やっと日通の引越し便が到着。いよいよ本格的な常夏の楽園生活のスタートです。僕たちのアパートから15km山に入ったキュランダは熱帯雨林に囲まれた高原の避暑地。ここにある世界最大のバタフライ・サンクチュアリで100匹以上のユリシーズを見ました。3匹見ると幸福になれるそうですから、来年いっぱいは幸せでいられそうです。

Nittsu finally delivered our packages yesterday! Now we can start the full-scale paradise life of ever lasting summer. Kurand is the summer resort, the plateau surrounded by the tropical rain forest 15 km away into the mountain side from our house. We saw more than 100 ulyssese in the world largest butterfly sanctuary here. They say meeting with 3 of them brings you happiness, so we've seen enough for living happily next year.

バナナが帰って来た

サイクロン襲来から9ヶ月。インニスフェイルのバナナ園では復旧バナナの幼木が健気に実をつけていました。日本ではクリスマスの果物と言えばイチゴですが、豪州ではバナナとサクランボ。品薄で通常の10倍まで値上がりしていたバナナもやっと普段の値で買えるようになりました。モールには「バナナが帰って来た」というポスターが目立ちます。だけど日通に預託した僕たちの引越し荷物はいつになったら帰って来るのでしょうか？

9 month has passed since the attack of cyclone. The young banana trees in the banana garden in Innisfail had its fruit. In Japan strawberry is the symbol of the seasonal fruit for Christmas. In Austarlia that will be banana and cherry. The price of bananabs had been extremely expensive of its 10 times due to the shortage of products but finally it returned to the regular price. The poster in the mall says "Bananas are back!" but when can we expect our packages deposited to Nittsu??

最近のユミはワライカワセミの笑い声にも腹を立てています。豪州に戻って1ヶ月以上経過したのに、シドニーで日通に預託した引越し荷物がまだ到着しないからです。気分転換のためにケアンズの南90kmのインニスフェイルへドライブ。9ヶ月前に未曾有のサイクロンの直撃を受けた街です。地場産業のバナナ園や街路樹や家屋の被害はまだあちこちに見受けられます。またこの街は羽渡り40cmもある世界最大の蛾の生息地です。家から15kmの高原の町・キュランダのバタフライ・サンクチュアリで標本を見ましたが、日本のヨナクニサンの超大型種と言った感じです。

Recently Yumi easily gets angry even at the laughter of kookaburras. That is because she hasn't received her packages deposited with Nittsu in Sydney yet after more than 1 month from coming back to Australia. For her refreshment we drove to Innisfail, 90km away from Cairs to the south. It is the town where was hit by the unprecedented cyclone 9 months ago. You can still see the damage in the gardens of bananas, the most important local industry, the roadside trees, the houses. This town is fammous as the habitant of the world largest moth with its 40cm length wings. The other day I've seen its specimen in the butterfly sanctuary in Kuranda, the plateau town 15 km away from my house. It was like the extra large type of Japanese moth, Yonakunisan.

僕たちのアパートの裏庭にあたるグッド・ウッド・パークの主は4羽のワライカワセミ親子。朝夕テラスにやってきて大きな笑い声で餌をねだります。人間を恐れないので手渡しの餌を食べます。日中はあちこちに遠征しているらしく、半月湾のボートクラブのレストランの厨房にまで入り込み、シェフやウエイトレスに追い立てられています。

The master of Good Wood Park in our back yard is the family of 4 kookaburras. Every morning and night they come to our terrace(balcony) roaring with laughter for food. As they are not afraid of people you can feed them directly from your hands. During the daytime they invade different places, even the kitchen of the boat club restaurant in the half moon bay. Of course they are not welcomed and sent away by the chefs and the waitresses.
