週末にクックタウンに行ってきました。ケアンズから車で4時間、人口1500人のヨーク半島最北の町です。1770年シドニー郊外のボタニー湾に上陸して豪州の英国領土を宣言したジェームズ・クックは北上中にグレート・バリア・リーフで座礁。船体修理のためにクックタウンに6週間キャンプしました。1874年に始まるゴールドラッシュの最盛期には中国人3000人を含む2万人が逗留。現在の主要産業は観光、農業、漁業ですが、交通の便が悪いのがネックであり、魅力でも？日本の秘境ブームの頃の下北を思い出します。

Cook Town

We went to Cook Town last weekend. It takes 4 hours by driving from Cairns and has 1,500- population. It locates in the northernmost town in Australia. In 1770 after landing on Botany Bay near Sydney and declaring the English territoriality of Australia, James Cook’s ship was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef on the way to cruise up to north. He camped in Cook Town to fix the ship for 6 weeks. At the peak period of Gold Rush that started in 1874, 20,000 people including 3,000 Chinese stayed here. Present some major industries here are tourism, agriculture, and fishing. Inconvenience of transportation is the bottleneck and it could be the attraction. That reminds me Shimokita during the boom period of the secluded district in Japan.
