砂に埋もれていた松の根につまずいて転倒

海岸沿いの松原を走って転んだ。幸いなことに大した怪我ではなかった。転んだ場所は下り坂ではない。フラットな箇所だ。転倒した場所には松の太い根があった。夏バテで足をあまり上げずに走っていたので松の根につまずいたんだと思う。松原なので下は柔らかい土と砂。だから擦り傷(かすりきず)で済んだ。ガラスの破片とか細い竹の切り株みたいな鋭角状のものがあったら大怪我を負っただろう。
トレイル・ランニングで転びやすいのは木の切り株らしい。自分はまだ切り株で転んだことはない。今回の転倒の原因になったのは地面を這う松の根だ。砂に隠れていたため目視で確認できなかった。
地面を這う松の根
普通の硬い土に覆われている根なら問題ない。だが軽くて柔らかい砂に少しだけ覆われている根は困ったことに目に見えない。そして躓きやすい(つまづきやすい) - そんなことを体で知ったトレランだった。
同様の転倒事故は広葉樹の森でも起きやすいんだとか。地面から突き出た石や木の根を大量の落ち葉が覆い隠してしまうからだ。だから全国各地のトレラン大会の運営者たちは定期的に落ち葉を片付けてコースを保守しているらしい。
薄暗い森林での転倒を防ぐにはサングラスを着用しない
トレランで転倒を防ぐには、
ロードのときよりも足を上げて走る。(「すり足」のような足の運び方は危険)。
数メートル先の土の状態を目でよく観察する。
下り坂では膝を少し曲げ、ストライドを短くし、前傾姿勢をとる。
…などの方法があると思うけど、個人的には「森林の中ではサングラス着用しない」をそこに追加したい。一般的にトレイルは市街地よりも薄暗い場所が多い。

だからサングラスをかけていると足元の複雑な地形を視認するのが困難になる。自分がよく走っているコースは海岸の砂浜と松林が混在する。こういう場合は明るい砂浜では紫外線を防ぐサングラスを着用し、暗い松林の中に入ったらそれを外す、という工夫が必要だ。
森林内でのサングラス着用には小枝とか梢(こずえ)が目を突き刺す危険を避ける意味もある。だが自分はトレイルの状態の把握を困難にするサングラス着用に積極的には賛成できない。一番良いのはロード用の着色したサングラスとは別に無色のサングラスをトレラン用に新たに購入することかな。
腕を下げて走れば転倒しても軽傷で済む
転倒しないようしっかり対策していても転ぶときは転ぶ。そこで転んだときに備えて何をすればいいか考えた。
本やWEBで調べると、深刻な裂傷を防ぐために手袋やロングタイツの着用が推奨されているようだ。自分がよくやっているのは下り坂で腕を下げてバランスをとること。言葉ではうまく説明できないが、ドリフターズの加藤茶がやっていたヒゲダンスのポーズに少し似ている。下の写真はトレランとは全く関係ないジャズのレコード・ジャケットだけど、このイラストのおじさんの腕の位置がまさにバランスをとるポーズだ。

この姿勢は転倒しないようバランスをとるだけでない。転倒したときに掌(てのひら)または肘(ひじ)を地面に着地させることによって脳や内臓など大事な部分を瞬時に守ることができる姿勢でもある。上のイラストは腕をやや下げすぎかな。これだとスピードを上げて走るのは無理。実際のトレランではもう少し腕を上げる必要があるね。
それと切り傷を消毒する薬も必要かも。あと包帯とか? テーピングのほうがいいかな。トレランで装備する必需は意外に多い。それらを全部バックパックの限られたスペースに収納するわけだから品だ。
