人間の腸内には、1000種、約600〜1000兆個もの腸内細菌がいると言われている。
「腸内フローラ」と呼ばれる、これら腸内細菌全体の構成が、人間の健康と深い関係性にあることが様々な研究から分かってきている。その関係性は免疫系に関連したアレルギー、肥満などの生活習慣病、発がん、老化、さらに脳機能にまで及んでいる。
腸内フローラの研究は、近年のゲノム解析技術の革新と相まって、今、医学、医療産業に大きなインパクトを与え始めている。
腸内フローラの医学用語である「細菌叢（さいきんそう）」を社名に掲げ、2014年に創業した「サイキンソー」は、日本初を謳う在宅での腸内フローラの解析サービス『マイキンソー（Mykinso）』を提供するスタートアップだ。同社は昨年末に、2.7億円もの資金調達を成功させている。
今回はサイキンソーCEO沢井悠氏に、腸内細菌の解析サービスにおけるビジネスの展望と、今後、腸内細菌の解析が生み出す新たな医療の形について聞いた。
次世代シーケンサーが探求する、微生物のアマゾン
小腸と大腸からなる腸は、長さ7メートル程度。腸内細菌は、この大河のような消化器官の中で、宿主と共生関係にあり、“微生物のアマゾン”さながらの生態系、腸内フローラを形成している。
生活習慣や年齢などから、腸内フローラには大きな個人差がある。その個人差から有益な情報を得ることができれば、健康維持や予防医療に大きく役立つとされている。
沢井氏：
将来的には腸内フローラの解析を、さまざまな病気の予防に役立てることができればと考えています。たとえば血圧は、脳梗塞、脳溢血、糖尿病、心臓病を予測する指標として用いられています。腸内フローラも同様に、その構成が認知症などの精神疾患、糖尿病などの生活習慣病のほか様々な病気を事前に予測する指標になると考えられます。
血圧の高い人が、血圧を下げて重篤な疾患を回避するように、将来は腸内環境を適切に整えることがさまざまな病気の予防医療になると考えています。
サイキンソーが提供する腸内フローラ解析サービス「マイキンソー（Mykinso）」は、生活習慣についての簡単なアンケートに答え、専用のキットをつかって自宅で便を採取し、郵送するだけという手軽さが売りだ。6週間後、解析結果は腸内細菌のデータベースと照合され、インターネット上のユーザーページで見ることができる。
サイキンソーウェブサイト内の「検査結果サンプル」より。他にもビフィズス菌など主要な細菌の割合、腸内の菌組成など、現在は5項目の解析結果を知ることができる。今後は花粉症などのアレルギーやメンタル面の指標を追加することを視野に入れているという。
