Japan is going all out to win medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Japan Sports Agency has announced a project aimed at improving the competitiveness of Japanese athletes.
The program is the first of its kind to be organized by the government. Under the plan, promising high school students will be chosen for seven Olympic sports, including rowing and handball. The project will also target promising athletes for five Paralympic sports.
Sports were chosen based on the potential for athletes to reach an international level in a short period of time. Officials will receive applications online and choose up to three athletes for each sport after screening and a series of physical tests.
