亦一時、天皇遊行到於美和河之時、河邊有洗衣童女、其容姿甚麗。天皇問其童女「汝者誰子。」答白「己名謂引田部赤猪子。」爾令詔者「汝、不嫁夫。今將喚。」而、還坐於宮。故其赤猪子、仰待天皇之命、既經八十歲。於是、赤猪子以爲、望命之間已經多年、姿體痩萎、更無所恃、然、非顯待情不忍於悒。而令持百取之机代物、參出貢獻。
然天皇、既忘先所命之事、問其赤猪子曰「汝者誰老女。何由以參來。」爾赤猪子答白「其年其月、被天皇之命、仰待大命、至于今日經八十歲。今容姿既耆、更無所恃。然、顯白己志以參出耳。」於是、天皇大驚「吾既忘先事。然汝守志待命、徒過盛年、是甚愛悲。」心裏欲婚、憚其極老、不得成婚而賜御歌。其歌曰、
美母呂能 伊都加斯賀母登 賀斯賀母登 由由斯伎加母 加志波良袁登賣
又歌曰、
比氣多能 和加久流須婆良 和加久閇爾 韋泥弖麻斯母能 淤伊爾祁流加母
爾赤猪子之泣淚、悉濕其所服之丹摺袖。答其大御歌而歌曰、
美母呂爾 都久夜多麻加岐 都岐阿麻斯 多爾加母余良牟 加微能美夜比登
又歌曰、
久佐迦延能 伊理延能波知須 波那婆知須 微能佐加理毘登 登母志岐呂加母
爾多祿給其老女以返遣也。故此四歌、志都歌也。

Once, when Emperor Yūryaku was strolling by the Miwa River, he saw a young girl washing clothes by the riverbank, her appearance exceptionally beautiful. The Emperor asked the girl, “Who are you?” She replied, “I am known as Akainoko of the Hiketabe clan.” The Emperor then issued a decree, saying, “You shall not marry anyone else; I will call for you.” With that, he returned to the palace.

In response to these songs, Akainoko’s tears soaked her red-dyed sleeves. She replied with the following song:

Having built a fence and left it unfinished,

In the bay of Kusakae, lotus flowers grow.
The young and flourishing ones are like
The envy of others.
