Salesfor the third quarter were $8,232,526 compared to $8,419,663 forthe same three month period one year ago, a 2% decrease. Sales for the nine months ended March 31, 2012 trended down by 14%to $26,978,082 compared with $31,252,603 for the same nine monthperiod a year ago. Nine month net income declined to $2,008,524compared to $2,585,934 for the same nine months last year. Dilutedincome per common share was $0.27 compared with $0.35 one year ago. Tissue deprived of oxygen (ischemia) is a serious health conditionthat can lead to damaged heart tissue following a heart attack and, in the case of peripheral arterial disease in limbs, amputation, particularly in diabetic patients. Northwestern University researchers have developed a novelnanostructure that promotes the growth of new blood vessels andshows promise as a therapy for conditions where increased bloodflow is needed to supply oxygen to tissue. "An important goal in regenerative medicine is the ability to growblood vessels on demand," said Samuel I. "We approached this as an engineering problem," said first authorMatthew Webber, a doctoral student in Stupp's research group at theInstitute for BioNanotechnology in Medicine (IBNAM). "To be able todesign and create a small molecule that can assemble intonanostructures that function therapeutically is rewarding." Stupp and his team created a nanostructure in the form of a fiberthat displays on its surface a high density of peptides(potentially hundreds of thousands) per fiber. The peptides mimicthe biological effect of VEGF, initiating the signaling process incells that leads to blood vessel growth. The extremely large number of active peptides results in a verypotent therapeutic, and the size and stability of the nanofiberensure the structure is retained longer in the tissue afterinjection. The researchers used an animal model of peripheral arterial diseaseand demonstrated the effectiveness of the nanofiber in treating thecondition. In animals whose limbs were restricted to only 5 to 10percent of normal blood flow, treatment with the nanofiber resultedin blood flow being restored to 75 to 80 percent of normal levels. Treatment with the peptide alone did not produce the sametherapeutic effect; the nanostructure was needed to display thepeptides to produce results. High dietary fat, cholesterol linked to increase risk of prostatecancer - Gantry Crane Manufacturer

Elevated fat and cholesterol levels found in a typical American-style diet plays an importantrole in the growth and spread of prostate cancer , say researchers at Thomas Jefferson University's Kimmel CancerCenter. Their study, the first to show such an association, is published inthe December issue of The American Journal of Pathology. Itdemonstrates how mice eating a Western diet, and predisposed todevelop prostate cancer, can develop larger tumors that are fastergrowing and metastasize more easily to the lungs, compared toanimals eating a control diet. In this study, a research team led by Philippe G.

Frank, Ph.D.,assistant professor in the Department of Stem Cell Biology andRegenerative Medicine at Jefferson, tried to understand whyprostate cancer incidence is low in Asian countries, butsignificantly increases in Asian men who move to the United States."Our hypothesis is that environmental factors, most likely presentin the diet, may act as late stage promoters, responsible for thetransformation of a prostate tumor from an early stage form into amore aggressive and clinically-apparent form," says Dr. Frank. Dietary fat and cholesterol have been shown to be risk factors inthe development and progression of other tumor types, butdiet-based studies in prostate cancer patients have reachedcontradictory conclusions, Dr. Frank says. For this reason, he andhis colleagues turned to the TRAMP transgenic mouse model todetermine the role of dietary fat and cholesterol.

This mouse modelis believed to closely parallel the pathogenesis of human prostatecancer. TRAMP mice were placed on a diet that contained 21.2 percent fatand 0.2 percent cholesterol, reflective of a typical Western diet.A control group of TRAMP mice was fed a normal chow that had 4.5percent fat and negligible amounts of cholesterol. They found that the Western diet accelerated prostate tumordevelopment and progression. These tumors also produced increasedlevels of receptors that bind to lipoproteins carriers ofcholesterol, and they were more aggressive. The researchers furtherdiscovered that the TRAMP mice fed a Western diet appeared toexperience greater incidence of cancer metastasis to the lungs, compared to the control group. The research team also noted that TRAMP mice fed the high fat/highcholesterol chow had less cholesterol in their blood compared tocontrol mice fed the same diet. "This likely reflects the fact thattheir tumors depend on cholesterol to grow," explains Dr. Frank."This study suggests that monitoring cholesterol levels in men atrisk, diagnosed, or treated for prostate cancer may help limitcancer growth or even recurrence." By Kathleen Doheny HealthDay Reporter FRIDAY, May 4 (HealthDay News) -- Breast cancer in men is much lesscommon than it is in women, but it may be more deadly, new researchsuggests. "Men with breast cancer don't do as well as women with breastcancer, and there are opportunities to improve that," said studyauthor Dr. Jon Greif, a breast surgeon in San Francisco.

"They wereless likely to get the standard treatments that women get." Survival rates for men with breast cancer, overall, are lower thanthose for women, at least when it is diagnosed in the early stages,Greif found. The cancers differ in other respects too. Greif was scheduled to present his findings Friday at the AmericanSociety of Breast Surgeons annual meeting in Phoenix. Greif and his team warn, however, that some of the differences theyfound may not bear out in clinical practice. A big limitation to the research: The database they drew from keepstrack of which breast cancer patients die, but not what they diedfrom.

So it is impossible to tell if they died from their cancer orsomething else, he explained. Although many men may not be aware that they can get breast cancer,nearly 2,200 new cases of male breast cancer are expected thisyear, according to the American Cancer Society. The societyestimates 410 men will die of breast cancer in 2012 in the UnitedStates. Greif compared about 13,000 men with breast cancer, identified fromthe National Cancer Data Base, to more than 1.4 million women withbreast cancer. fog lights bulbs

The data covered 1998 to 2007. The investigators evaluated cancer characteristics and survivalrates, taking into account age, ethnicity and other factors. Men with breast cancer were more likely to be black than women withbreast cancer (11.7 percent versus 9.9 percent) and less likely tobe Hispanic (3.6 percent versus 4.5 percent), the researchersfound. Men's tumors were larger when diagnosed; they were more likely tohave later-stage tumors, involvement of lymph nodes, spreading toother parts of the body and other differences. Men with breast cancer were less likely to get a partial mastectomyand to receive radiation, the study found. Greif also found that women's overall five-year survival rate was83 percent, but men's was 74 percent. That was looking at allbreast cancers, whatever the stage. China auto license plate frame

When Greif's team looked at survival stage by stage, women withearly stage cancer had better survival rates than men with earlystage disease. The gap closed when men and women had more advanceddisease. "Women are encouraged to get breast exams [and] mammograms," Greifsaid. That is why their cancers are often diagnosed earlier, whenthe tumors are smaller, he said. More awareness of male breastcancer is crucial.

The study is valuable in pointing out gender differences, even withits limitations, said Dr. Susan Boolbol, chief of the division ofbreast surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. "Over the years, it was thought that, stage for stage, women andmen had equal outcomes," Boolbol said. The new research findsotherwise, and includes larger numbers of men with breast cancerthan many previous studies did, she noted. Lack of information on cause of death is a major limitation of thefinding, she said.

Even so, "this is a very interesting study, and... it will open the door to more research being done in malebreast cancer." The study may also raise awareness that men can indeed developbreast cancer, Boolbol said. Men should be aware of potential symptoms of breast cancer, theAmerican Cancer Society suggests. Among them: a lump or swelling,dimpling or puckering, a turning inward of the nipple, scaling ofthe nipple or breast skin, redness of the nipple or skin of thebreast, and nipple discharge.
