Love is patient, love is kind. 愛は寛容であり、愛は親切です

「愛は寛容であり、愛は親切です」

Love is patient, love is kind.

これは聖書　II コリント１３：４の言葉です。

This is from the Bible verse II Corinthians 13:4.


この順番がすごいと思います。寛容であり、親切なのです。
I found out that this verse is quite a remarkable verse.
First comes the patience and then the kindness.


普通、私たちは「愛は親切です」と考えがちです。

In normal sense, we think that love is kind.


しかし、ここでは　patinet 寛容　が先に書かれています。

But here, the word patient comes first.


学校英語の世界では、 patient　ときたら　＝忍耐強い　の構図がなりたちます。

The students might just say patient = perseverance, long suffering, endurance.


最近は「電子辞書」を使う生徒がほとんどなので、　Ａ　＝　Ｂ　のようなひとつの意味に偏っていると思います。

Most of the Japanese students use electronical dictionary, so they find the meaning of the word A = B, just one.


辞書（中辞典）を調べていくと、　patient には「忍耐強い」「勤勉な」「我慢強い」「患者」とあり、よくよく見て行くと例文に「寛容である」と載っています。

Looking the word 「patient」up in the dictionary, you'll be surprised to find many meanings to it.


そうなると、『Love is patient.』と書いてあれば、愛は忍耐強く、我慢強く、寛容であるとなります。

So 『Love is patient.』means love is to endure, suffer a long time , persever and be 寛容。


う～ん、忍耐と我慢が先か...

Well, endurance, suffering and perseverance come first...


言葉を学ぶということは、このような地道な作業を必要とします。

To learn the language requires you to look the meaning of the word up in the dictionary and it will take time.


そして、『愛』ということで話題になった時に、すらっとこれを引用できるような知識が必要です。
