They did not venture to stay after this, and withdrew to Macao; but the Governor of Macao resolved to make an effort to have the decree rescinded, and sent a special ambassador with upwards of seventy Portuguese in his train. He knew that, by the laws of Japan, disobedience to the Shogun’s decree was a capital offence－that is, one for which death was recognized punishment; but he persuaded himself that, as in Europe, the persons of an embassy were held inviolate, so would it be in Japan.
The Shogun, however, did not feel in any way bound by the international usages of Europe; and as these Portuguese had come to Japan in direct disobedience of his decree, he ordered them to be beheaded. And beheaded they were, with the exception of a few servants, who were compelled to witness the executions, and were then sent back to Macao to tell the governor what they had seen; and that if he, or the king of Portugal himself, ventured to come there, he should be served in the same manner.

ポルトガル人はこの後も居残る危険は冒さず、マカオに引き揚げた。 しかし、マカオの総督は、この布告を撤回させようと決心し、70人を上回るポルトガル人を引き連れた特別使節一行を送った。 日本の法によれば将軍の布告への違反は大罪であり、死罪が一般的な処罰であることは総督も承知していた。 しかし、ヨーロッパでは使節団の人々は丁重に扱われるので、日本でもそうだろうと思い込んでしまった。
しかしながら、将軍にはヨーロッパの国を越えた慣習に縛られる気持ちは毛頭なかった。 これらのポルトガル人が禁令に違反して日本に来たとき、将軍は彼らの首をはねるよう命じた。 ポルトガル人達は、証人とされた数人の召使を除いて処刑された。 その召使たちはマカオに送り返され、彼らが見てきたことを総督に告げた。 もし、総督またはポルトガル王でさえ、日本に来たなら、同じ運命になるに違いなかった。

日本の海外貿易は朱印船で行われた。 当初、幕府はキリスト教禁止と貿易は切り離して考えていた。 長崎を母港としてマカオ、ルソン、シャム、ジャワなど東南アジア各地と交易した。 輸入品は生糸、絹織物、綿布、陶磁器などで、輸出品は銀、銅、硫黄、刀剣などだった。 1635年に貿易が廃止されるまで、のべ350隻の朱印船が航海したという。
