太平洋のスペイン船（２１）

　原本はイギリス人、Laughton, John Knoxにより書かれた「Sea fights and adventures, described by John Knox Laughton」（1901年刊）で、カリブ海を舞台に私掠船（しりゃくせん：国黙認の海賊船）の活躍を青少年向けに描いています。　　現在騒がれているソマリア沖や南シナ海の海賊と違い、当時の私掠船は国同士の勢力争いの影の尖兵の感があり、また植民地からスペインが奪った黄金財宝を横取りするという爽快感もあります。　　まずは読んで見ましょう。

The Spaniards in the Pacific (21)
　The Spaniards had arranged a number of barrels of powder immediately beneath the deck; and when these were fired, the deck and the hundreds of Japanese swarming on it were blown sky-high together.

　The carnage was horrible. The waters of this beautiful lake-like harbor were covered with floating corpses burnt out of all human resemblance, or ghastly fragments of limbs and trunks. But again the Prince of Arima called his men to the attack.

　When the relentless Japanese returned to the assaults, the Spaniards could retreat no farther. They were now compelled to fight to the death; and though they fought with the courage and energy of despair, they were crushed by courage equal to their own pouring on them in overwhelming numbers. Still the defense continued for several hours. It ended only when the last Spaniard had been killed, and the ship, torn, shattered, had been sent to the bottom of the harbor.

　スペイン人達はすぐさまデッキの下に多数の火薬の樽を並べた。　　これらは火をつけられ、デッキとデッキ上にいる数百人の日本人を空中高く吹き飛ばした。

　大殺戮は恐ろしいものだった。　　この美しい湖のような港内は、ひどく焼け爛れた死体とぞっとするような手足や胴体の切れ端に覆われた。　　しかし、有馬氏は部下を再攻撃にかりたてた。

　日本人が休みなしの攻撃に戻ったとき、スペイン人にはもはや後退する場所はなかった。　　彼らは死ぬまで戦い続けるはかなかった。　　彼らは勇気と絶望から生まれた力で戦ったけれども、同じような勇気をもった圧倒的な数の敵に押しつぶされた。　　さらに、守りの戦いは数時間続いた。　　最後のスペイン人が殺されてようやく戦いは終わった。　　ばらばらに砕かれた“マドレ・デ・デウス”は港の底に送られたのである。
　
（ひとこと）
　ポルトガルとスペインは植民地獲得とキリスト教布教に同じウェイトをおいていたので、幕府は警戒し、キリスト教禁止と同時にポルトガル船の来航を禁止した。　　1640年にそれに違反し、ポルトガル船が長崎に来航したので、同船を焼いてしまった。　　本文では、1609年の有馬氏の件と1640年の件を混同したものと思われる。
