Morgan, the king of buccaneers(1)
Everybody has heard of the buccaneers, and I think I am right in saying that nearly everybody supposes that they were pirates. This is not quite correct, for whereas pirates are legally described as “hostes humani generic,” the buccaneers were only enemies of the Spaniards; and though perhaps honesty was not their strong point, they were very far from being common robbers or promiscuous thieves.
They were, in fact, a curious outcome of the protectionist theory put in force by the Spaniards, who reserved to themselves the sole right of trade with the West Indies and Central America; who claimed, in fact, to be owners and sovereigns of the whole country by right of the gift of Pope Alexander VI.
It is very probable that the Pope had not meant quite what the Spaniards understood. What he done was this. The discovery of America and the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope were made within a very few years of each other, and disputes immediately broke out between the Spaniards and the Portuguese as to their rights over the newly-found lands.

ポルトガルによりアフリカ西岸ルートの探査が長い間続けられていたが、ついに1488年にディアスが喜望峰を発見し、インドへの東回りの航路の可能性が生まれた。 一方、スペインは西回りにインドへ行く航路を探っていた。 コロンブスがアメリカ大陸に始めて到達したのは1492年、喜望峰発見の4年後のことである。
