最近忙しくてこのブログも見ておりませんでした。
最近17年前に発売された洋楽アルバムの再発行版の歌詞をみてたらpay the piperというイディオムがありました。「報いを受ける」とか「費用を負担する」という意味ですね。
He who pays the piper calls the tune.
笛吹きに金を払う者だけが曲を注文できる。ということわざもあるみたいですね。
pay the piper という表現は、hiroさんご紹介のことわざの一部が独立したものだそうですね。
面白いです。pay the piperもcall the tuneも独立して使用できるそうです。
Piperは昔報酬をもらってパブなどで笛を演奏した人のことだそうです。(参考:「英和イディオム完全対訳辞」 朝日出版社)
