最大70cm、5kgにもなる陸に住むヤドカリ。7-8月に10万個の卵を産みます。左のはさみは右より大きい。ジンベイザメと赤ガニで有名なインド洋に浮かぶ豪州クリスマス島が世界最大の生息地ですがケアンズにもいるらしい。先日ご近所でゴミバケツを漁る巨大ヤシガニを目撃。もちろんOZ特有のジョーク。かつて南太平洋諸島では重要な蛋白源でしたが、時に食中毒を起こします。沖縄の食堂でメニューに載せているのはジョークじゃない。ウミガメもヤシガニもクジラも食べる日本人。異常なものに対する退廃的な嗜好としか言いようがありません。

I found a robber crab!

Robber crabs are land-living Paguridae that become 70cm long and 5kg maximum. They lay 100,000 eggs in July and August. Their left claws are bigger than right ones. The world biggest habitat is Australian Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean where is famous for whale sharks and red crabs, but people say they live in Cairns as well. A few days ago I found a huge robber crab raiding the garbage bin in my neighborhood. Of course it’s an OZ joke. Robber crabs were ever one of the important resources of protein in South Pacific Islands. They sometimes cause food poisoning. You can find the robber crab dish on the menu of eatery in Okinawa; it’s not a joke. Japanese eat turtles, robber crabs and whales. I cannot help but assert that it’s a decadent taste for abnormal things.
