〈命〉の従者のなかに
〈愛〉の翼と旗をもつ者がいた。
きれいな旗で、そこに美しく織られていたのは
魂を没収された色の顔。……そう！ 君の顔だった！
春に思い出す不思議な音、不安な音が
そのひだから震えて聞こえた。自分でもわからない何かが
ぼくの心をかけめぐった。記憶から消えたあの記憶が－－
人の生まれる暗い門がうめき、すべてが変わってしまった
あの時の記憶が。

ヴェールにつつまれた女がその後ろを歩いていた。この女は
前行く者の旗を巻きあげてかたく留め、そして
彼の翼から羽を一枚抜いて
彼のくちびるに近づけた。羽はまったく動かなかった。
女はぼくにいった。「ほら、息をしていないわ。
あたしとこの〈愛〉はふたりでひとり……あたしは〈死〉なの」。

There came an image in Life's retinue
That had Love's wings and bore his gonfalon:
Fair was the web, and nobly wrought thereon,
O soul-sequestered face, thy form and hue!
Bewildering sounds, such as Spring wakens to,
Shook in its folds; and through my heart its power
Sped trackless as the immemorable hour
When birth's dark portal groaned and all was new.

But a veiled woman followed, and she caught
The banner round its staff, to furl and cling,―
Then plucked a feather from the bearer's wing,
And held it to his lips that stirred it not,
And said to me, ‘Behold, there is no breath:
I and this Love are one, and I am Death.’

やはり絵ではなく詩において、
ロセッティの表現力は生きている－－
彼の見ていた世界が見える気がする。
