Myrtle Creek police were Led Traffic Signals on a bizarre carchase Thursday afternoon, when the alleged drunk driver they weretrying to stop, used his signals to change lanes and never wentabove the speed limit. Officials with MCPD say that just after 1:00 p.m., a hit and runwas reported on Johnson Street, involving an alleged drunk driverin a Toyota pickup. Just a few minutes later, a Myrtle Creek police officer located thepickup and tried to make a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as Wayne Thomas May, 36, allegedlyfai Led Traffic Signals to stop, and even drove around a deputies car, which wasparked and blocking his escape.
Officers say May used his turnsignal when he went around the patrol car, and never drove abovethe speed limit. The pursuit ended up on Interstate 5 northbound, with Myrtle Creekofficers and Douglas County Sheriff's deputies behind the man, whowas still going the speed limit. He eventually pulled over after taking Exit 110 at Boomer Hill,coming to a stop at the bottom of the off ramp. Officers took May into custody without incident, and he was takento the Douglas County Jail. Police say he had a blood alcohol level of .26, which is more thanthree times the legal limit.
He was charged by police with DUII, attempting to elude and failingto perform the duties of a driver. Bail was set at $72,500.
