The clash between Michael Jackson and Eminem is turning into a real thriller.
In a rare victory for the former King of Pop, Black Entertainment Television announced it is yanking the rapper's controversial new video, "Just Lose It," from rotation out of respect for Jackson.
The stinging Em clip shows the mischievous rapper, dressed as Jackson, sitting on a large bed as young boys play behind him.
Jackson, 46, is set to face child-molestation charges in January. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts against him.
The Gloved One was furious when he got wind of the offending vid, calling Eminem's latest work "outrageous and disrespectful."
BET chairman and founder Robert Johnson agreed with the singer Tuesday, saying in a statement that "BET pulled the video because we feel it is inappropriate to use our network to air a video disparaging Michael's character, or that of any other celebrity."
Jackson praised Johnson's move early Tuesday during an interview on The Steve Harvey Morning Show on Los Angeles radio.
"I appreciate very much the love and support that you all have shown me," Jackson swooned on Havey's drive-time show before explaining the source of his ire.
"I am very angry at Eminem's depiction of me in his video. I feel that it is outrageous and disrespectful. It is one thing to spoof, but it is another to be demeaning and insensitive," he said.
"I've admired Eminem as a artist, and was shocked by this," Jackson continued. "The video was inappropriate and disrespectful to me, my children, my family, and the community at large. It is my hope that the other networks will take BET's lead and pull it."
But other video channels, including MTV, which started airing the clip last weekend, have no plans to shelve the video. After all, this latest controversy is fairly tame by MTV-Eminem standards--in 2002, the network and Slim Shady took a fair amount of ribbing for airing "Without Me," in which a bearded Eminem can be seen hamming it up in a cave as Osama Bin Laden.
One might think MTV owes Jackson the favor of pulling the vid more than BET, as the cable channel was largely built in the early 1980s on MJ's early event videos like "Thriller," "Billie Jean" and "Beat It."
But the music industry is notoriously fickle, and MTV will surely do everything in its power to keep playing the Eminem clip for ratings.
If Em's label, Interscope, is worried about the BET ban, it certainly isn't letting it show.
The label released a terse statement Tuesday, saying, "Eminem's video for 'Just Lose It' was taken off the air today by BET. Michael Jackson requested that the station no longer play the video because he found it offensive. We are sorry that BET made this decision."
This isn't the first time Slim Shady has spoofed the "Dangerous" singer. In June 2003, Eminem mocked Jackson's infamous baby-dangling incident by holding a doll over a window ledge at a Scotland hotel.
Eminem's new album, Encore, is set to drop Nov 16.
