Half in fun いたずら半分に

先月の２７日から３０日まで関東にいました。

I was in Kanto area from 27th to 30th last month.


そこでいたずら半分に、でも思い切ってどのくらいの日本人が英語を話せるか実験してみました。

I tested how many Japanese people can speak English, half in fun but with my desire.


日本語を話せない外国人になりきりました。

I pretended and acted to be a foreigner who can not speak Japanese.

「阿佐ヶ谷に行きたいのですが、この線に乗っていていいのですよね？」

「I want to go to Asagaya, but am I on the right train?」


たいていの人は驚いた表情になり、困惑して「アイム・ソーリー, アイ・キャントゥ・スピーク・イングリッシュ」

Most of their face looked surprised and turned to be embarassed and said 「I'm sorry I can not speak English.」


でも、「阿佐ヶ谷に行きたいのですが」と言い続けると一人の男性が

But I kept on saying 「I want to go to Asagaya」and one man stood in front of me and


（えっと、阿佐ヶ谷だから、品川で乗換か...）

（Hum, Asagaya...transfer at Shinagawa...）


この日本語のつぶやきも全部聞こえてわかっているのですが、敢えて分からないふりをし続けました。

I could hear and understand all what he was saying in a small voice, but I went ahead and pretended to be a foreigner.


もうすぐ品川という時点になって、彼は必死に言いました。「次の駅 降りて 山手線に乗り換え」と

As the train was to arrive at Shinagawa station, he desperately said to me「Get off next station change Yamanote Line」

彼は路線図を見て「マジかよ～、全部日本語じゃん」

He looked at the JR railway lines network map and said 「Unbelievable, all in Japanese...」


「高田馬場で中央線」

He told me 「Takadanobaba change Chuo Line 」


品川で降りる前に彼に「あなたの英語は素晴らしいですね」と言いました。

When I was about to get off at Shinagawa station, I told him 「Your English is good.」


彼は嬉しそうに「サンキュー」と答えました。

He replied to me 「Thank you.」with a big smile.


でも私は、日本の英語事情はこの程度かと驚きながら無事に阿佐ヶ谷につきました。

I safely got to Asagaya but was in a shock that Japanese ability to speak English was this level...

上野駅では「ノー、ノー」と言われ、文化の中心の上野で？？？と驚きました

At the Ueno station, everyone said 「No, no, no English.」and I was really shocked. Ueno is the center of cultural place and no one speaks English.

「このオレンジと緑はなんて書いてあるのですか？」と聞いても「ノー、ノー」

I asked 「What does this orange and green sign say?」and the answer is 「No, no...」

駅員なら大丈夫だろうと「これはなんて書いてあるのですか？」

I decided to ask 「What does this sign say?」to the station employee.


駅員さんは無視

The station employee just ignored me.













帰りの電車の中で、子どもに「ハロー！」と言ったところ

I said 「Hello!」to the children sitting next to me　on my way back.


お兄ちゃんは即座に「ハロー」

The little boy immediately replied to me 「Hello!」


妹はニコニコしながら、握手しようと手を出してきました

His sister put her right hand to shake hands with a cute smile.

「何歳？」と聞いたら、外の看板に気をとられつつも「５歳」

I asked him 「How old are you?」but his mind was half to the sign but he answered 「Five.」


妹は指で３歳と。

His sister showed me three fingers meaning she is three years old.


彼らは幼く、何も話せませんでしたが、私を気遣って、微笑みをくれました。

They were too small to speak English but I was able to feel that they were caring me and giving me their lovely smile.




山手線で「京浜東北線に乗り換えるのにはどの駅で乗り換えたらいいですか？」と隣の女性に尋ねました。

I asked 「Which station should I get off to transfer to Keihin Tohoku Line?」to the lady sitting next to me.


彼女は本で顔を隠してしまいました。

She covered her face with the book.


「困った、困った、どうしよう？」と英語でつぶやいていましたが誰も見て見ぬふりです

I grumbled 「Gee, I'm in trouble. No one speaks English. What should I do?」

But everyone around me stood cool and unconcerned to the person in need.


その時、高校生の声が聞こえてきました。

Suddenly I heard the talk of the high school students.


「あの人困っているよ。」

「She is in trouble.」


「もうすぐ品川だよ」

「We will soon arrive at Shinagawa.」


青春まっさかりのその高校生たちは一生懸命でした。

Adolescent　high school students were trying as hard as they could do.


ひとりの高校生が歩み寄って来て言いました。「品川駅で降りて京浜東北線に乗り換えてください。」

One of them walked up to me and said「You get off at the Shinagawa station and transfer to Keihin Tohoku Line.」


私は更に、「山手線は緑色ですが、京浜東北線は何色？」と尋ねました。

I added another question.「The Yamanote Line is green. What color is the Keihin Tohoku Line?」


高校生みんなが「青」と答えました。

All of those high school students shouted 「blue!」


日本の未来を担う彼らの幸せを祈りました。

I prayed for the youngsters who are to be the support and driving force of fortune Japan.
