Chapter Ⅴ Destruction in the Atlantic
17.
Admiral Doenitz was naturally delighted with the performance of his boys. On 15 June he reported to Hitler the gratifying number of sinkings compared with the small number of submarines employed, and predicted “vast possibilities through the rapid increase in number of U-boats and the use of supply submarines.” He dwelt on the poor quality of American defenses, the heavy destruction of tankers and the failure of new construction to replace shipping losses. In a press interview that summer Doenitz declared: “Our submarines are operating close inshore along the coast of the United States of America, so that bathers and sometimes entire coastal cities are witness to that drama of war, whose visual climaxes are constituted by the red glorioles of blazing tankers.”
No frantic boast, this; burning tankers were not infrequently sighted from fashionable Florida resorts, and on 15 June two large American freighters were torpedoed by a U-boat within full view of thousands of pleasure-seekers at Virginia Beach.
