Chapter ⅩⅡ Atlantic (August 1943―June 1944）

Captain Joseph B. Dunn’s task group, composed of escort carrier Bogue and destroyers George E. Badger, Osmond Ingram, Clemson and DuPont, had the honor of delivering the final blows to German supply submarine activity in mid-Atlantic. On her eastward passage, Bogue’s aircraft ended the carrier of U-86. On 9 December she sortied from Casablanca with orders from Admiral Ingersoll to support a convoy until it had cleared a concentration of U-boats near the Azores. The object of Cinclant’s present interest and of Bogue’s hunting was a 1600-ton milch cow, U-219, about to fuel U-172, outward bound to the Indian Ocean.
U-172 did not get any nearer the Indian Ocean than that, but she made a good try, sinking only after a fight which lasted intermittently from 0723 December 12 to 1021 next day. She received 14 depth-charge attacks by one destroyer, and gunfire attacks by all three. U-219, the milch cow, did escape, and ended the war under Japanese colors. U-850 was sunk by Bogue’s planes 170 miles distant from her, on the 20th.

U-172はそれ以上インド洋に近づくことはできなかったが、勇気ある行動をとった。 12月12日7時23分から次の日の10時21分まで、丸1日以上断続的に続いた戦闘の直後、U-172は沈んだ。 U-172は1隻の駆逐艦から14発の爆雷攻撃を受け、他の3隻すべてから砲火を浴びた。 乳牛U-219は逃げることができ、日本の軍艦として戦争を終えた。 20日、U-850はボグーの飛行機により、空母から170マイル離れた地点で撃沈された。

大戦中、日本とドイツの協力は潜水艦を通じて細々と行われた。U-219はインド洋で任務についていたが、1945年5月8日ドイツ降伏後、日本海軍が接収し、伊号505となった。 その後、めだった活躍することなく終戦をむかえ、船体は処分された。
