Lord Thomas had been taught this in 1588, and knew that the way to fight the Spaniards was to keep to windward of them, so that they could not close, and pound them with the great guns; for the Spanish guns were not nearly so good as the English, and their men knew very little about working them, and pretended to say that they were the weapons of cowards; that the sword and the pike were the only weapons fit for a soldier.
But Sir Richard Greynvile, who commanded the Revenge, and was the vice-admiral of the English fleet, though he was not a sailor at all, and had very little experience at sea, was nearly as ignorant about this as the Spaniards. But he was a bold and resolute soldier. He is described as an exceedingly proud, overbearing, obstinate man, and very violent-tempered if he did not get exactly his own way. He was fond of showing off, too, out of bravado, and to make people afraid of him.

リベンジを指揮するイングランド艦隊の海軍中将、グレイン・バイル卿は元来船乗りではなく、海上勤務の経験もほとんどなかったため、スペイン人と同じくらい海に関して無知だった。 が、彼は大胆かつ断固たる軍人であった。 彼は、大変自尊心が強く、高圧的で頑固であり、自分の思い通りにならないと激高する人物だと描かれている。 彼には虚勢から大いに自慢したり、まわりの人々に自分を恐れさせる悪い癖があった。

ガレー船による海戦では、敵船に接舷し、兵士が突入して白兵戦で敵船を制圧する、という戦法だった。 大型のガレオン船が登場すると、多数の舷側砲を搭載できるようになり、砲撃戦が主流になった。 15世紀末は２つの戦法の過渡期にあたり、スペイン軍は砲撃戦従、白兵戦主の戦術をとったが、イングランド軍は砲撃戦を主におき、切り込み専門の兵士は乗せていなかった。
