However, mismanagement and poor planning result in its failure. Director: Richard Attenborough Writers: Cornelius Ryan (book), William Goldman (screenplay) Stars: Sean Connery, Ryan O'Neal, Michael Caine . The true story of Operation Market Garden, the Allies attempt, in September 1944, to hasten the end of WW2 by driving through Belgium and Holland into Germany. The idea was for US airborne divisions to take the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen and a British airborne division, reinforced by a Polish airborne brigade, to take the town of Arnhem. They would be reinforced, in due course and in turn, by the British XXX Corps, land-based and driving up from the British lines in the south. The key to the operation was the bridges, as if the Germans held or blew them, the paratroopers could not be relieved. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris and stubborn German resistance would ensure that Arnhem was a bridge too far. 6,073 件のコメント

I remember watching this as a kid when it came on TV and i was absolutely in tears with the scene at the end with all the wounded sitting and lying on the grass outside the front of the house and singing/humming as the Germans slowly approached after the negotiated ceasefire and eventual surrender - I couldnt stop crying.
Such a powerful scene still hits me in the feels more than 20years old.
This will forever remain one of those untouchable classics due to the era it was recorded and i doubt there will ever be a director bold enough to challenge it with a remake nevermind having such an amazing cast of actors. 2 mike johns mike johns 5 か月前 God bless those British paras who fought to the last man in Arnhem x 134 Jody Russell Jody Russell 2 年前 I don't see why some people are that harsh on this movie it's a 100 times better than Pearl Harbor, best of all no CGI! 1413 Terry Thompson Terry Thompson 1 週間前 I was in 1 para who took part in the parachute scenes and ground scenes really good experience jumping from the Dakota's 19 doland trump doland trump 5 か月前(編集済み) 55:39 what does that mean???? lunatics laughing at british paratroopers... 12 Sojourn Sojourn 3 か月前 An excellent movie! Now, Field Marshal, we have everything we need: unit dispositions, operational plans, targets and plans for further allied landings. I gave the order to prepare the bridge of Nimwegen to be blown up. If I blow it up tonight, then this Operation 'Market Garden' will fail." Model: "Why do all my Generals want to destroy my bridges? Come on Ludwig, we will eat together." Ludwig: "Eat... When I was 16 I started as an apprentice in a huge factory that employed about 5,000 people.
Many of them were ex military. They'd dropped at Arnhem, fought at El Alamein, Monte Casino, Normandy, Dunkirk, Berlin, Burma, Singapore even on the Russian convoys up to Murmansk dodging the U Boats and Stuka dive bombers
Naturally I knew many of them, I worked alongside them for about five years. About ten years later, I decided to take a trip around Europe just to see for myself all the places that I'd heard so much about. I went to Arnhem, and found it fascinating. I found the bridge, about 4 O'clock on a beautiful summer's evening. I sat on the grass at the side of the river about 300 yards from the bridge and tried to picture in my mind's eye the fighting that took place.
I then walked up to the bridge and discovered stone steps that went from the grass verge up the side of the bridge to where the road was. To my amazement I could see what looked like bullet holes in the concrete still there after all that time.
The next day I found the museum and as I arrived a bus load of Welshmen arrived, and they were singing in Welsh as you might expect. Outside before entering the museum I saw an American Sherman tank. Not so big, but very interesting to see. I'd never seen a tank before.
Inside the museum there's a huge map on a very big wall, with lots of little lights that highlight all the important locations during the battle. Then I remember going into another room and seeing life size dummies of paratroopers dressed in the kit they had to jump out the plane with. I remember, the huge leg bag, the heavy ammunition belts and of course their automatic weapons. Each paratrooper must have been carrying 100 Ibs, maybe even more ! A truly memorable day, I could NEVER forget.
Years later I met a old Dutch man here in Thailand who lived in Arnhem and saw the paras drop. But, he said they were sitting ducks. The Germans shot many of the paras before they even hit the ground. He also mentioned that there was SS Panzers hidden in the woods.
What a holiday that was. I travelled from Arnhem into Germany and went to West Berlin on the train, passing through Soviet occupied East Germany and then of course onto see the Berlin Wall and the Brandenburg Gate, where I stood on an observation platform, and I could see the East German border guards with their alsatians dogs and all the razor wire and tank traps. Truly amazing and unforgettable !
There's much more I could tell you but that's enough for now
Now I've retired and live in Thailand and have a wife and two children here. 195 Stapel Chips Stapel Chips 4 か月前 I am so glad, that I can speak dutch, german and english. 13 dimi1326 dimi1326 1 か月前 Now imagine the horror of watching this today....in CGI!!!!! 14 p 28 p 28 1 週間前 30 corps stretched back 50 miles.
