下面为大家整理一篇优秀的essay代写范文 -- Ernest Hemingway's new critical edition of Our Times should be produced,文章讲述在21世纪,我们都知道现代主义已成为世界上非常重要的概念。我认为出版和推荐有关现代主义的好书是每个媒体的责任。众所周知,现代社会过分强调物质,忽视了人自身的价值。这应该更改。我们如何改变它?书是很好的工具。

Ernest Hemingway's new critical edition of Our Times should be produced
Dear colleagues in editorial board,
It’s my pleasure to put forward this proposal.
In 21 century, we all know that modernism has become a very important concept in the world. I think publishing and recommending good books about modernism is the responsibility of every press. As we all know, the modern society emphasizes too much on materials and ignore the value of people themselves. This should be changed. How can we change it? Books are good tools.
I want to recommend Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time as. We would better produce a new critical edition of it. I will give my reasons in the following paragraphs.
The benefits of the public and the press
If we publish the new critical edition of In Our Time, it will attract many readers to buy the new book. As we all know, Hemingway was one of the most important writer in the 20th century and some people even see his as the God. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 with his book Old Man and Sea and the book also let him win the Nobel Prize in 1954. From what are said above, we can come to the conclusion that Hemingway was a great writer and was respect by many readers. But why is In Our Time? It is because this book was the masterpiece and it shows the maturity of Hemingway’s writing style. In conclusion, the publishing of the new critical edition of In Our Time will let more readers get close to Hemingway and realize the modernism in his book. And our press will get enough profits because of the high sales of the book.
Modernism is relevant
Modernism encourages people to create new things. It is not limited by tradition and goes for what’s freer. Modernism goes out of society and nature. The modernism works were produced after the second industrial revolution and as a result, they show us the complex emotions of people in that day. The development of technology and productivity made people material. They felt indifference between people. They felt lonely easier. Modernism focused on what people are. In 21st century, the productivity of our society has reached the top of human history. There is also a trend that people focus too much on materials and become blundering. How to prevent this trend and make people become more humanistic? Modernism is great thoughts that will make people focus more on people themselves. In conclusion, modernism is relevant is 21st century.
In our time is a good representation of modernism
In our time contains 15 short story and16 essays. Among the 16 essays, the first six pieces is the first group. They mainly describe the quality of people through what they do. In the second group, people’s reactions when facing threats are focused on. And the rest of the 16 essays are about bullfight. They describe violence, disaster and unavoidable death which are the general forms of life. Bullfight itself is a kind of tragic enhancement of life.[I.Joseph DeFalco, 1963, The Narritive Pattern in Ernest Hemingway’s Short Stories, University of Pittsburgh Press.

To sum the essays up, the first group mainly describes things and people. The second group mainly describes the mental state of people. It focuses on the helpless and lost sense that people feel. If we say the first group focuses on the life state in reality, then the second group is about illusory of feelings. They are two sides of one thing. Then in the third group about bullfight, the two sides are combined. The tradeoff of life and bravery inspires readers to think about what people are and what they think.
So I think this book is a representation of Hemingway’s modernism. The book has an irreplaceable value in inspiring people in the 21st century.
Hemingway is an important voice to hear in the 21st century
Hemingway was born in 1898 so he is a member of what is called the “Lost Generation”. The two most important works of Hemingway are The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms. They were both published in 1920s. The movement of modernism was at its high tide in 1920s so we can know Hemingway is an important writer in the development of modernism.
“I can’t sleep so I lay on the bed thinking about other things. Then I can’t control myself and begin to think about Bolet. All other things disappear. When I think about Bolet, my train of thought becomes slow. At the moment, I begin to cry. After a while, I feel better. Hearing the passing of the train, I go to my dream.” This is the most impressing paragraph in The Sun Also Rises. It deeply describes Barnes’ ambivalence. He loves Bolet but he can’t love her because she will be hugged by another man when Barnes met her. Sometimes she was just behind a wall but she was kissing another man. All of this make him suffer a lot.
“……I look out of the window where is only a gobbet of black. I can only hear rains out there. The kid was dead. So the doctor looks tired. But why should they treat the kid like that? They maybe think the kid will breathe. I don’t believe any religion, but I know the kid should receive baptism. However, if he had lost his breath? He didn’t breathe. He died as he was born. He just lived in Catherine’s tummy. In the past, I could feel his kicking when I touch Catherine’s tummy. But this week he didn’t do so. Maybe he had been asphyxia a week ago. What a pitiful kid! I hope I am asphyxia as him. No, I am not asphyxia. It’s invigorating to be asphyxia as soon as I was born. So I will avoid the trouble when I die. Now Catherine is going to die. Your ending will be like this. Life is just like playing baseball. They throw you on the playground and tell you some rules. The first time you can’t reach the base, you will be killed. You will die with no reason you know.” This is an impressing paragraph in A Farewell to Arms. It describes what Henry thinks when he knows the death of his son. This is a direct description of one’s emotion. It’s a great reflection of Hemingway’s modernism.
From the analysis above, we can come to a conclusion that Hemingway is a great representative writer of modernism. And modernism has its important value in the 21st century. So Hemingway is an important voice to hear in the 21st century.
Supplementary Material
1.Review of In Our Time
“This book is the first meaningful book of Hemingway no matter in which aspect.”
--by Philip Young
This item should be included in the volume because it emphasizes the importance of In Our Time. Even among all of Hemingway’s excellent works, this book still has its special meaning. This item will attract more readers to buy the book.
2. Today’s review of In Our Time

--by Malcolm Cowley
This item shows us the feature of Hemingway’s works. Because of the continuity among them, readers will buy every book of Hemingway to feel the continuity. As a result, this book will sell well.
3. “I’m the sun.”
--by Nietzsche, another modernism writer
This item is short but strongly impresses us by Nietzsche’s confidence as a human. Readers will feel the power of modernism writers through this item. So they will buy the book to see how Hemingway shows his modernism and whether his modernism is powerful or not.
4. “Life is a kid of language. It conveys some kind of truth to us.”
--by Schopenhauer, another modernism writer

The image for the book’s front cover

I choose this picture as the front cover because it not only contains Hemingway but also contains today’s city. Many people may think Hemingway’s works are out of date because they were written before decades. In the picture, there is a strong visual shock. On the left side, it’s our modern city which is colorful and gorgeous. On the right side, it’s Hemingway’s dull monochrome photo. They form a strong contrast. It will tell readers Hemingway’s works are still meaningful in our time. Modern society is materialistic and in the city we just see buildings. We can’t see any people on the left because what we concern is what interest we can get and what comfortable life we can enjoy. Hemingway’s big face on the right side inspires us to think about who we are. We are human who have many kinds of emotions and need to be focused on.

Eating disorders
Introduction
Eating disorders is a topic in health field similar to HIV: people are not willing to mention it in public, because it is something related to secrets. When it comes to eating disorder, sufferers feel weird and guilty, worrying that others will throw strange eyesight on them. Thus, if one wants to tackle his illness, one should stand out and face it. This article focuses more on the reasons of eating disorders and how one is influenced by it .

Abraham, Lauren. “Four Ways To Keep Your Fitness in Focus.” Bodybuilding. com. Nov 11, 2011. Nov 12, 2014. Due to the reality that humans are not isolated from society, there is a dilemma between human beings and their surroundings. It is very hard to handle life when life has its own agenda. On the one hand, people yearn for parties, activities and gatherings to release them from dull lives, on the other hand, they want to establish an atmosphere where they can live up to their goals of defeating eating disorders. Sometimes, they can't control where they are and what to do. They should at least go to work, therefore they are surrounded by temptations. And situation is worse when they are at home. They might imagine that they could spend some money on sports equipment, designing a corner for exercise and preserve some healthy and fresh fruits and vegetables to withstand their hunger (Abraham). However, it is impossible to avoid all those temptations, because they are prone to extend their real characteristics such as greediness and laziness when they are alone.

Buchanan, Daisy, “ Forget the 'cause' of eating disorders – we must promote good mental health.” Guardian.com. Feb 24, 2014. Nov 11,2014.
Have you ever considered age as an element for your eating disorder? Maybe it is ridiculous and weird for a person to define a kid aged 5 years old as a victim of eating disorder, but the truth is that most markedly among the under-15s, with some patients as young as five. Or we can boldly suggest that your gene of eating disorder is hidden when you are just a little girl and when you grow up, encountering some motivations, your inner disease blow up, thus your eating disorder happens. If what I mentioned above is true, kids will become the objects of our protection to prevent more victims of eating disorders. Body image and weight are the external focus of eating disorders, but the solution must look beyond that. Eating disorders frequently develop during adolescence or early adulthood (“Eating Disorders”). Is there anyone think of the reason why eating disorders happened during adolescence? And unfortunately, I personally do not agree with such an comment. Actually, eating disorder may hide in a kid’ s body already when he/she was five or six years old. I am sure you have encountered a little girl enjoying a cup of Haagen-Dazs in a dreaming restaurant, if her mother did not interrupt her, she would eat her loved ice-cream without an end. Some may suggest that it is her age: five years that she cannot control herself rationally and restrictively. No, persons’ control ability are formed when they were young, and they just hide their tendency of eating disorder, trying the best to perform normally. Lots of victims consider others such as parents and friends as supervisors who can prevent eating disorder. Once they are not under the protection given by parents or friends, they show the reality of their disorders.

“Eating Disorders.” Psychologytoday.com. Oct 14, 2008. Nov 11, 2014. Females are much more likely than males to develop an eating disorder (“Eating Disorders”). And I totally agree with it. Woman is more easily suffering from eating disorder than man. Why? Women, to some extent, are weaker in several aspects than men, such as in business field or in family. So there is no doubt they have to attract males’ attention or to justify themselves from other aspects and image will be the one, thus, best way is to keep a fit body as they learned from TV or magazines. When their images cannot reach their expectations, there are always two situations happen: The first is to continue to lose weight and keep their good images, another is to give up and to burn the candle at both ends, thus, they are on the way of eating disorder. How pity! Woman are woman themselves and they should live for them, not for others. There is so many things to do in the world and weight cannot be the only one. Moreover, your soul mate will not absolutely focus on your image, any one do this cannot be your true love.

“Eating Disorders.” Psychologytoday.com. Oct 14, 2008. Nov 11, 2014. Environment can influence one’s eating habit and they after a long time they turn out to be a nightmare. The line between being careful about what you eat and being obsessive is difficult to distinguish. Especially in the United States, where fast food restaurants are abundant and two-thirds of people are overweight or obese (“Eating Disorders”). This is true that when you are saturated with smell and watering food, it is so hard to control yourself. Imagine that when you are dieting and at the same moment your skinny girlfriend is eating a yummy hamburger full of beef and cheese while she has no worry about her weight. Will you be influenced? And persuade yourself a burger will not make a big push to you losing-weight plan? However, when you swallow the first mouth of burger, you find yourself cannot withstand the ice-cream full of strawberries and fried chips . Compared to others, after eating, you rebuke yourself and then you go into a circle of dieting and binging. The way to change this and go out of the circle is to go far away from any of these fast food restaurants and stick to it for more than one month. However, most people suffering eating disorders cannot obey this rule.

Finnegan, Leah, “ Eating Disorders: Colleges Highlight Quiet Problem.” The Huffington Post. May 25,2011. Nov 11,2014. Have you ever enjoyed a buffet with several of your old friends. Talking, laughing and without any conscious of how much food you put in your stomach? Have you ever felt that you cannot live without chips, ice-cream or a little Macaron when your boyfriend broke up with you? It seems like that you want to eat every piece of snack, crushing them and squeezing them, to let off your depression and anger. Or you must eat a lot of chocolate to soothe your anxiety and discontent when you cannot find out a perfect and suitable plan for you business customer . But the question is how do you define these situations, can we call it eating disorder? Eating disorders cause people to overeat, undereat and/or follow strictly moderated diets. They can cause osteoporosis, heart problems and death. And they are largely misunderstood (Finnegan). To some extent, I object this saying, though it did have something rational . Even though eating disorder refers to those people who cannot control the load and variety they eat and in a very short period of time they can binge food which normal people cannot withstand or do not eat any. But the point of eating disorder could not focus on the food itself or the person himself, it is the duration of this symptom that counts. As we know, everyone in the world can have one-time diet out of control which is understandable. However, if this habit lasts up to three months or more, or happens 3 times a week or more regularly, then we can define it as eating disorders. So do not easily define yourself as a victim of eating disorder, which may lay side effects on you, if you cannot find a right way to tackle it.

Richards, Elizabeth, Sarah, “Orthorexia: When healthy eating becomes an obsession.” CNN. com. Oct 13,2014. Nov 11, 2014.
We have discussed a lot why people would suffer from eating disorder, except the harms eating disorder bring to people. So what I would mention here is the hurt that eating disorder make people’ s lives a mess, one of them is orthorexia. Orthorxia is a kind of disorder characterized by a morbid obsession with eating healthy food only, which means you cannot have a normal social activity and try new and magic food. Do you experience the risk of being labeled as orthorexia if you refuse to eat at mainstream restaurants, where nearly every sauce or salad dressing contains soybean oil or high-fructose corn syrup? Or will you be labeled "too extreme" if you choose to buy only local, organic produce? According to Sondra Kronberg, nutritional director of the Eating Disorder Treatment Collaborative, it depends on how much the fixation interferes with your quality of life, and your ability to be social and function (Richards). Why cannot you give up your belief in healthy food, though they give you a relatively healthy body but at the same time, they ruin your normal life and you lose much happiness of your life.

“Weight Loss: Gain Control of Emotional Eating.” Mayoclinic. Com. Dec 1, 2012. Nov 11, 2014. If you know about your problem and try to solve it, there is always lots of methods for you to follow from the Internet. However, let me to be honest, none of them is going to be work if you cannot find the essence of your disorder. Have you ever think of why you suffer this torturing disease while others can enjoy their meals as well as control their appetite easily? Depression, anger, breaking up or simply due to others’ words can change your mood and if you cannot vent it effectively, all the outer elements can result in your eating disorders. Eating disorders frequently occur together with other psychiatric illness such as depression, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders. Hence, you would say that everyone in this world will suffer misfortune , for instance, almost everyone cannot find their soul mate in their first dating or no one would never suffer from death, especially when they are the youngest in their family. Yes, people can absolutely experience misfortunes, but how they face it? They face it by the way of more healthy one. You can do sports or travel alone, or you can stay at home for a week. Supposing a scenario in which people can overcome all the mentioned factors, unfortunately, they can hardly shun this curse: emotional eating. People are prone to resort to food for comfort when they are vulnerable or depressed. In general, they use food to release or mitigate their depressing emotions such as sadness, loneliness, fear and anger when they encounter difficulties or are under pressure. They choose to be occupied by food instead of facing difficulties. Consequently, their efforts of overcoming eating disorders are ruined. Emotional eating leads to overeating, especially foods with high calories, sweets and fat. However, eating too much does not tackle problems. Instead, people are fraught with additional guilt when they set all their goals back. “They are finally trapped in an unhealthy cycle: their emotions trigger them to overeat, they beat themselves up for getting off their weight-loss track, they feel bad, and they overeat again, (“Weight Loss: Gain Control of Emotional Eating”).” In fact, people who are close to the door of getting normal finally give up, mostly due to the fact that their eating disorders cannot be defeated. A person can hardly resist delicacies by nature, not to mention they are surrounded by different emotions.

conclusion
There are always inevitable depressions, when people are near the door of paradise. People find themselves trapped in a weird circle: a circulation of failure and success. A great number of people immerse themselves into eating disorders. Unfortunately, owing to their self-conditions and atmosphere around them, it is hard to overcome such an illness successfully, even though they had a transient success. There are loads of things one can enjoy except body and image. It is understandable a female focuses her energy on her image, but at the same time she is supposed to love herself more than anyone else. So does a male. Moreover, as I exploring and researching this topic on eating disorders, I found that even though professors and doctors are all the way finding reasons of eating disorder and how it can be tackled, effective and lasting methods have not be detected. In other words, sufferers are supposed to depend on themselves to overcome disorders and there is no magic medicine to help them except themselves.

What is industrialization?

What is industrialization?
After the epoch-breaking foundation of New China in the year 1949, the ancient China has begun its new journey of modernization which centered on its industrialization. What is industrialization actually? It refers to the process in which modern industry gradually occupies a leading role, the country gradually set up a complete and independent national economy system and industrial system, the country transforms from a backward agricultural country to an advanced industrial country, and pushes its social productive forces to present an obvious improvement. In the country's first years of foundation, China is a backward socialist country still in its embryonic stage, the Chinese people are with a determined mindset and ambition to engage themselves in the probe of the road of industrialization, as a result, the various achievements China has obtained between the year 1953 to 1978 was a focus of the world in aspects like transportation, several coastal industrial bases and so on (Wei, 1995). However, there were also weaknesses caused by the industrialization which Chinese government was well aware of and paid much attention to. This paper will center on two major aspects of the strength and weakness that Chinese industrialization has brought about, one is its priority on heavy industry and the ensuing solid foundation for the whole Chinese industry development; the other is the result of a long term accumulation of various factors, the highly centralized planned economy system, which has exerted far reaching and complicated consequences on China's development since its formation.

In the beginning of regime foundation, the condition of new China can be described as economically poor and blank and backward in the aftermath of many years' war destruction. There is almost no foreign official reorganization of the new government. Chairman Mao Zedong always mentioned such words at the early years of the new nation: What can we produce now? We can make a chair and a desk, we can make a kettle and a tea bowl, we can grow wheat, we can grind wheat into flour, and we can make paper too. But we cannot manufacture a car, or an airplane, or a tank, or a tractor. This is, actually the common concern of all the Chinese leaders at that time. However, what is important then is the great advantages of the newly built socialist system which can mobilize all Chinese people at the most extent to complete a grand task, that is to say, Chinese people can have endless potential and passion to build the new China. This is beyond conquering of all possible enemies. The other reason is the outburst of Korean War which made the international environment much more severe than before (David C, 2003). As a result, the issue of national security was high lightened and became a priority in front of all Chinese leadership. With the strategic purpose of protecting the new nation and breaking overseas blockade and hostility from western capitalist countries, in order to enhance Chinese national defense power, the Chinese lead ship gave up their previous thought of giving the people peace and security as well as firstly developing light industry and farming and then developing heavy industry, and decided to develop heavy industry instead. Facing all the severe landscape of economy, politics and military affairs, China's unitary hope to establish a close relationship with the western capitalist world, of course, melt into nothingness, it cannot merely rely on external assistance but must have to inherit and develop the spirit of self reliance, arduous struggle in order to build and make this country and nation stronger. To make the country a truly independent and powerful one, China must set up quickly a relatively complete and self contained industrial structure, and put the development and prosperity of heavy industry in a more prominent position. With this idea as a general guideline, the industrialization plan was put into action in new China with the famous five year plan in the year 1953, apart from this, it sent out a delegation of Chinese government to Soviet Union to deal with the negotiation with Soviet Union, their topic was around the assistance from Soviet Union to more than one hundred industrial programs (Chang, 1990), the key is heavy industry, in particular the industries like steel and iron, coal, electric power, petroleum, machinery manufacturing, airplane, tank, tractor, vehicle manufacturing, military industry, non ferrous metal, basic chemistry and so on. In fact, the Chinese leadership at first had no intention to copy the industrial road of the Soviet Union; it originally did have the expectation of following a gradual road of industrial development through its own accumulation step by step. The good news about this road is New China can better deal with its own relative factor endowment, and can bring its relative advantages into full play; the result is a relatively reasonable and proper economic relationship and urban rural relationship. What's more, with the progress and update of various relative factor endowments, as well as the update of economic structure, China can finally gain a strong and prosperous international image by brisk walking cautiously planning small step. However, the problem is this strategy would take a long time; maybe ten years or more, even this would need external tolerant conditions like the expansion of international market and development of international trade. So for new China who urgently needed to make sure national security in the first place, this strategy seemed to like that distant water cannot quench present thirst, this is the reason why Chins in the end chosen a road to copy the experience and developing mode of the No 1 Soviet Union who was the only country that could match the powerhouse of the United States in the western world then. The development of the heavy industry does have important strategic meaning to the newly founded China, this strategy increased Chinese people's confidence and enthusiasm to build and contribute to their motherland, which is related to patriotism and national self respect and loyalty; but in a more proud meaning, the priority of developing heavy industry is related to national security and stability of the new socialist regime. When new China is following closely behind the Soviet Union, the two biggest countries in aspects of both territory and political meaning can inevitably become a mental and strategic threat to the western world. This in turn will create a relative tolerant outside environment to China's economic recovery, economic development and its new regime stability. And in the end China has completed its socialist reform with a peaceful method and laid a solid foundation for later economic development. More importantly, this strategy enables China to quickly build a relatively complete national economy system, and is a prerequisite condition for China's comprehensive industrial ability in its future development.

The other topic to be discussed in this paper is the gradual formation of new China's economic system, the highly centralized planned economy system, this is the result of various factors, and the most important and deeply rooted factor is the national condition (Liu& Steven). In fact, the above mentioned strategy of priority on heavy industry has something to do with the highly centralized planned economy system. One can analyze this in the economic angle. For example, there are some features of heavy industry, it needs large scale investment and intensified capital, it needs a relatively high organic composition of capital, that means for a backward country a lot of equipments have to be imported from abroad, and it has a long cycle of construction in contrast to a slow repayment. These features make it a must to have a large scale of capital accumulation and supply in order to develop heavy industry. But for new China, the situation was then that its agriculture and light industry were not advanced at all, this situation is directly contradictory to China's resource endowment. This can be seen in the following aspects like the contradiction between the construction cycle of heavy industry and capital factor endowment, the contradiction between investment scale and capability of capital mobilization, the contradiction between the high technology feature and China's foreign currency payment capability. As a result, to make sure there is enough resource accumulation flowing to heavy industry, there must be a new system arrangement to cater for this national strategy. This system must have a planned intensified resource allocation of all economic resources, and the forces of a planned economy must have to gradually replace the dominant position of market economy. It can be said that the strategy of priority on heavy industry is the basic reason for the establishment of China's planned economy system (Montinola, et al, 1995). Of course, this does not mean the planned economy system is the only reason, other reasons are like the unification of finance and economy, the support of the Korean War, finding a solution of the contradiction between privately own economy and national economy are not to be ignored. The above mentioned are the intrinsic and inevitable factors which push the formation of the highly centralized planned economy system. One needs to notice the severe economic and social problems this strategy has brought about, the Chinese country and people have a price to pay for this strategy. The first problem is the serious national economy imbalance in industrial structure of agriculture, light industry and heavy industry. The urban and rural structure problem is deeply rooted and hardly changed, the progress of urbanization is slow, the surplus rural labor force cannot be transformed and effectively utilized, the problem of farmers, agriculture and country is very severe. Another is that non-national economy is much more difficult in their position comparing national economy, what is even worse is that non-national economy are strictly limited and even eliminated, this policy will without doubt bring a lot of difficulty to the questions like social employment, circulation of commodity, enough supply of commodity as well as people's daily life. A merely severe problem is that because there is no market competition and the absence of non-national economy system, many stated owned enterprises and rural cooperatives suffer from a low efficiency and a low competitive capability. The priority on heavy industry to surpass other countries did have obvious advantages in the beginning, but gradually the disadvantages of refusal of competition are presented with the passage of time. And in an environment which has no competition, the stated-owned enterprises would gradually form the habit of relying on help from the government, they gradually lose their initiative and ambition to create value for the country, they become efficient less and lose the ability to support themselves. For the rural cooperatives, they are born because of political forces, and without ongoing government stimulus and effective supervision, the bad result is an unfair phenomenon of different gains coming from same investment of labor and energy, and the agricultural produce is very low (Bates, 1987). The labor force on the whole has a low positive attitude in enterprises and rural cooperatives, the abundant market resources cannot be effective allocated and utilized, so the economy cannot achieve any big progress. And also the individual freedom is hurt because almost all the important issues are regulated by the government of various levels. The requirement of the minority is easily ignored or not paid much attention to, the leadership is not effectively supervised, and the result is there can be easily tendency of the problem like dictatorship, tyranny and corruption of some government leaders. This is a common problem in many countries that once practiced planned economy system for a long time.

In conclusion, new China's industrialization process is a complicated one that worth people's profound research to look at its strength and weakness in a historical angle. The conditions both abroad and home make it necessary to adopt those policies for Chinese leadership. After a careful analysis, one can get to know that the priority to put heavy industry in the first place protected the newly built regime, but also affected the future Chinese economic structure. The gradually born planned economy system, though a result of strategies at that period, indeed have exerted far reaching consequences for China's future development road.

Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane
Citizen Kane presents me with a charming mystery related to Charles Foster Kane, a great newspaper tycoon. The charisma is resonated and magnified through the unique narrative structure, which distinguishes itself from previous Hollywood films in a thorough manner and is widely recognized as a turning point in history of film-making connecting traditional films and modernist ones.
Citizen Kane impresses me from the way it organizes plots, a different narrative perspective and a mysterious protagonist. First, plots take the form of flashbacks rather than follow a traditional time order. Movies we have watched in this course, such as 42nd Street, tell an subjective and complete story, which generally speaking follow a chorological line. Conflicts involved have their origination, development, climax and end. Yet, this traditional method can never be found in this film. The director, Orson Welles, breaks such mode by displaying five flashbacks of Kane’s life discovered in Thompson’s investigation. These five flashbacks are Kane’s childhood, career, marriage, life in his middle age and later years in the respective view of five different people. Though the technique of flashback also appear in Sunrise, it’s the first time to use it as a main constituent rather than a mere decoration to make a film.
Second, Orson Welles tells Kane’s life not from an omniscient view or letting his audience experience it from a character’s view. He makes an innovative move by introducing an outsider who knows little about the protagonist, which builds up a enchantingly mystery over Kane’s last word until the last minute of this film. No specific answer is provided, and curiosity maintains. After an inquiry into Kane’s previous friends and acquaintances, audience finally realize that the only one who knows exactly what “rosebud” means died, leaving all sorts of guesses.
What’s more, it’s also creative to construct an obscure character of Kane. Conventionally, the main characters are of certain features which lead the development of the story. However, in this film, the audience can only view Kane from other people’s perspectives, such as in their memories or diaries. It is through different people’s narration of Kane that a complicated but subjective Kane appears, which to the largest extent expands the imagination of each audience. Each audience can develop his/her own understanding of Kane, which makes each film-viewer actively participates in the production of the film Citizen Kane. He is, and still will be an enigma which has already rooted in people’s mind through these flashbacks.
We can find trace of these features in parts of Kane’s childhood, his newspaper career and his love stories with two women. All is completed in a third person’s view, through Thatcher's written memoirs, Kane's personal business manager, Mr. Bernstein and his estranged best friend, Jedediah Leland. They put emotions and comments into their narration of the Kane they know without letting the audience connect with Kane directly and objectively. We are not provided with a fact but personalized stories of Kane. It helps to develop a much closer emotional connection with Kane and increase an impulse to actually get to know him. Yet, it is doomed to be something impossible since his death has already been informed at the beginning of the film.
In my view, if each classic movie symbols a different world, then Citizen Kane is a world of puzzle and mystery. Even after half a century, it still enchants people to enter into this maze, follow the interviewer’s step to discover a man’s life in multiple dimensions.

Why don't we have a vaccine to prevent AIDS?

2020-08-13 16:56:02 | 日記
下面为大家整理一篇优秀的essay代写范文 -- Why don't we have a vaccine to prevent AIDS?,文章讲述获得性免疫缺陷综合症或通常简称为AIDS,是当今人类面临的对我们健康的最大威胁之一。

Why don't we have a vaccine to prevent AIDS?
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or commonly abbreviated as AIDS, is one of the biggest threats to our health that we human beings are facing nowadays. It is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV. In another word, AIDS is the late stage of HIV disease. Since the first AIDS was reported in the United States in the spring of 1982, more than 35 million people have contracted the HIV, and about 25 million people lost their life because of the complications caused by AIDS. HIV is fatal in that it attacks out bodies’ immune systems, which produce white blood cells and antibodies responsible for attacking viruses and bacteria. It is as if that the HIVs are spies that ambushed in the barracks of the forts and disable all the soldiers. Without soldiers (immune system), the forts (out bodies) are much easier to be conquered by other ailments, like flues.

Some people may ask that since we have already defeated those seemingly invincible diseases such as measles, smallpox and mumps by using vaccine, is there a vaccine for HIV? Although scientists have been struggling for years trying to create vaccines for the AIDS, unfortunately, completely competent vaccine has not been invented yet. That is because HIV is a very complex, highly changeable virus, which makes speedy development of a successful preventive HIV vaccine extremely difficult.

HIV is spread when infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk gets into another person. Thus, there are several ways for the HIV to transmit: sexual transmission, blood transmission and vertical transmission. The current worldwide expansion of the AIDS epidemic is primarily driven by the sexual transmission, either heterosexual or homosexual. Also, transmission of HIV can occur following transfusion of blood product derived from an infected person’s blood. The perinatal transmission of HIV virtually account for all new HIV infections in children. As long as we know these means by which HIV spread, we can take measures to avoid AIDS by these following ways. Firstly, practice safe sex. Remember to use a condom with spermicide for anal, vaginal or oral penetration. Secondly, avoid sharing needles with other person. Thirdly, use medial latex gloves if we will be coming into contact with another person’s blood, urine, feces or semen. Indeed, HIV is fatal, but as long as we follow the rule listed above, there is no chance for us to contract the HIV. Meanwhile, we should also know that the HIV is not transmitted through daily hugging, kissing, message, shaking hands, insect bites and sharing showers or toilets with someone else with HIV.

As what I mentioned above, there is no cure for AIDS currently, but it may be treated with number of different antiretroviral drugs, often in combination. Early treatment with retrovirals, as soon as a person tests positive for infection with HIV, has been shown in studies to reduce to the transmission of HIV. Drugs such as AZT, DDI, and 3TC, which are reverse transcriptase inhibitors, have proved effective in delaying the onset of symptoms in certain subsets of infected individuals. The addition of a protease inhibitor, such as saquinovir, amprenavir, and atazanavir has proved very effective, but the drug combination does not eliminate the virus from the body. Thus, the current treatments are aimed to make patients live longer, lower their risk of developing non-HIV-related illness and to reduce the chances to transmit HIV to others.

A good piece of news is that the Thai HIV vaccine efficacy trial, known as RV144, demonstrated that latest vaccine was safe and modestly effective in preventing HIV infection. Therefore, we have to be confident, believing that we will finally defeat the AIDS just as we defeat those so-called cureless diseases like plague or smallpox hundreds years ago!
